In part 5 of the 1978 Kawasaki KZ1000 Project, I am once again visiting Kawasaki Jim. This time Jim is helping me install the motor on my KZ1000. Once the motor is in, progress continues quickly including refinishing and installing a Kerker exhaust, new chain and sprockets, new battery, etc. The process continues!

Nice going Jon, its coming back together. You might struggle with your idea to run a bracket from the muffler straight to the mount you pointed out. Too long and parallel to support. You might want to do something tidy and bring a bracket down from your top shocky mount to hold the muffler. Otherwise a 45 deg bracket from the top of the triangle for the rear footpeg holder. My Z spat the dummy today. Remember when I said I had the same prob your Honda did, where the timing advancer was sticky. I pulled mine apart and found on the inner piece, some slight rust on the surface. So I cleaned it with emery paper and gave it a light grease. Took it for a ride today, nice warm day too, down the hill to Bunbury. Coming back up the hill the bloody thing went better for a while. Up the top of the hill it started to lose power and I was hearing the rattly ping again. I still had 20 - 30 k's to go so I limped it home. About 15k's to go it started to blow smoke. When I got it home, the idle sounded pretty nasty. I started it up a couple more times after it cooled. Still sounds pretty manky. I was telling my wife, I'll rob the upgraded parts off it when I get my original Z1100 up and running. This one that died today was resurected from the grave yrs ago and has never really liked that process. It has had a few goes at getting it running. 3 sets of pistons so far. Time to pull the pin on it

Oh man, I'm really sorry to hear that! What a shame. Hopefully you got some good use out of it. Sometimes it's a love hate relationship with the old bikes. I was almost spit off a friend's vintage bike recently when the back wheel locked up at 55mph. The wheel freed up when I pulled the clutch in and I was able to coast to a stop (sure beats sliding). Shook me up a bit and I thanked the man upstairs for safety! It goes with the territory I guess.

A original LTD step-down seat will look even better
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
Thanks, Joseph. I have a step-down seat that I can use if I want. I may actually go to the flat KZ1000 A seat and tank at some point.

Nice nice very nice are you going to show installing dyna electronic ignition Jon have a good day
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
Thanks Mark. I decided not to do an episode on the ignition because there is already an excellent video on RU-vid covering the Dyna ignition installation on a KZ1000.

Looking good I wonder if you could cut that header back so the baffle fits in the right spot. Other then that it looks awesome.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
Thanks Andrew. The baffle is in the right place. It's just the tab on the baffle that is further back. I have already made a bracket for it so no worries. 🙂
