To me it wouldn't matter if I was 13 or 43 , just to go back to a great time period for Sports, Music ,TV and Entertainment which was the 1970's ,1980's and the 1990's ... Too me sports during these 3 decades was definite can't miss TV watching... Unlike today lol...
That opening intro to Monday night football, the voice of Cosell, Gifford and Meredith bring chills to the spine!! Brings me right back to 8 years old begging my Dad to let me stay up late!
There were so many good players on both teams. The 70s-80s were peak NFL. When people came to school on Monday morning everyone talked about the Redskins and the Cowboys. Glue for a strong community.
Dandy Don infamously warred with Howard... HC was a smart, articulate man while Don was a salt of the earth straightforward ass kicker. He drunkenly brawler in bars and just called shit as it was ....and didn't use the word 'truculent'....lol
Redskin Captain All Pro linebacker Chris Hanburger called a fantastic game. Hanburger called every defense from the huddle, no ear piece in his helmet, no coach in the press box telling him what to call, he did this all on his own, down and distance, identifying Cowboys player personnel packages, adjusting his calls based on Redskins nickel and dime personnel ,he knew everyone’s assignment on the defense, and had over 250 audibles memorized . You can see how many times he calls an audible and the defense shifts into the perfect defense for the cowboys offensive play. His pre snap play recognition was legendary and his audibles and adjustments made everyone on the defense better players. It was the final year of his great HOF career as he retired after the season and as Don Meredith commented, he clearly had lost a step after 13 seasons , but still had a pretty solid year playing a few months after knee surgery. ( 4 sacks , 5 delivery sacks, 2 batted balls , 2 forced fumbles )The Cowboys lined up DuPree on Hanburger most of the game , Landry knew very well you had to account for him or he would beat you with a big play, which he did so many times during his Hall of Fame career. IMO, the biggest play of the game was at 2:04:38 -48 , fourth quarter , game clock 2:32 ,Cowboys last possession when Staubach rolls left and Hanburger vacates his zone coverage and blitzes blasting him in the head coming over the top hitting his arm and causing a weak wobbly pass . They flag him for unnecessary roughness and Staubach wasn’t the same after that hit. Staubach gets right up and he’s wobbly as he walks and it takes a few seconds before he realizes his helmet is crooked , which Hanburger almost ripped off . He also turns around to see who blasted him , lol. Hanburger’s nickname was the “General” for his no nonsense , take charge military style of leadership he demonstrated , as he’s heading back to the defensive huddle he’s already thinking about his defensive alignment and he’s letting Kenny Houston know what he wants the secondary in for the next play and you see Houston letting Chris know he heard him. 2:05:13-14 Coach Landry realized Hanburgers delivery sack left Staubach disorientated because The Cowboys run the ball on the next two plays , after the two minute warning and a timeout. Staubach attempts one more pass, then takes a delay of game and his last pass attempt is way overthrown. Totally uncharacteristic of Roger in the fourth quarter of any game he played. Hanburgers “knockdown “ of Staubach , as they call it today , aka “ delivery sack” was the term George Allen used for it, was the biggest play of the game. Too bad MNF didn’t keep that camera shot rolling to show how ferocious the hit was, Gifford and Don stayed with the throw but they could see Staubach got blasted , which they tell us. The newspapers writers ,mostly from Dallas talked about it and wrote that after Hanburgers hit on Roger he wasn’t the same. Chris Hanburger , HOF 2011, was either an All Pro, All NFC, All NFL, or a Pro Bowler in 12 of his 14 seasons in the NFL. He was the 1972 NFC Defensive player of the year. He was selected to the Pro Bowl TEN times, but is only credited with NINE, as he could not play in the 1977 game due to his knee injury . In the era he played the coach’s and players voted for the Pro Bowl Team. Class act, great player, served his country in the US Army and humble. He wanted no accolades or any fanfare. They don’t make players like this anymore.
Hanburger. Back in the day I always thought his name was Chris Hamburger, maybe because he was teammates with Coy Bacon idk and forgot all about him until now. I was about 9 back in '78. Damn, learn something new every day.
Hamburger 🍔 had a whacky hairdo that looked like someone put a pot over his head and then cut straight around the edge of the pot. Dirty ball player and cheap shot artist.
I'm halfway through and gotta say Frank, Howard and Don are doing a masterful job compared to modern announcers. I haven't watched the NFL since around 2017 and haven't cared since around 07 but watching these games on YT has made me miss these classic announcers.
Al Michaels is the only one left from the old school and he makes the game interesting. Most of today's announcers are about as colorful as soggy raisin bran.
I lost my dad last October...he made me the diehard fan of the Redskins or commanders that i am today..and will always be!!.. but this game i remember..i was 8 and i had to go to bed at 10..i got to watch 1hour..i can remember wakin up to go the bathroom and seeing my dad celebrating in the livingroom after that 4th down throw! Its a great memory...thanks for posting this..HTTR4LIFE!
Hey Jamie sorry for your loss.i am taking care of my 85 year old father he had a fall in August and is fighting to get better everyday.i was at this game and at the time I was in the 3rd grade.my father had season tickets that he would purchase as an employee for the Washington post newspaper.i remember that we sat in section 114,still remember Joe theisman taking the safety.those were the days when football was great.i have to admit I am not a diehard fan like I used to be.stay safe and wish you well.
Thank u. And u take care to..hope your father continues to get better..rfk was such a special place..yeah im diehard but barely..sometimes i question myself and wonder why..well thanks for the nice reply..Happy Easter to u and your family
I was at this game with my bro Scott. 9-5, exciting game. they stuffed newhouse; he was telegraphing the type of play, mouthpiece in, run; mouthpiece out, pass.
Now I'm going to tell you what you didn't know about this game. The Redskins noticed while watching film that when the Cowboys had the ball, running back Robert Newhouse would let his mouthpiece hang out on plays when the Cowboys were going to pass and would stick it in his mouth on running plays when he knew he was going to have to block for Tony Dorsett. The result was the Cowboy offense sputtered in this 9-5 loss. The two teams played again on Thanksgiving Day, only this time, the Cowboys knew about the Newhouse situation. So Dallas turned the tables. On running plays Newhouse let his mouthpiece dangle from his facemask, and stuck it in his mouth on passing plays. The Redskins took the bait. The Cowboys cruised to a 20-0 halftime lead and eventually built the lead to 37-3 in a 37-10 win. The things teams find when they study film is amazing.
Yeah. They beat their ass on thanksgiving. My uncle lived in DC and another nugget..he owned a few cabs and drove redskins players. He came to visit for the holiday He said before the game came on the redskins players told him they are wasting time going to Dallas because they were going to lose.
This is extraordinarily high quality video from a 70s TV broadcast. Having attended many Redskins games at RFK, the audio, which has an nice analog quality to it, really captures the ebbs and flows of the crowd and generally the ambience of the stadium. It’s amazing how loud that stadium could get with 55,000 fans. I’ve watched several videos of old games but this video brought back the sensory experience so fondly remembered. Thanks for sharing!
Remember this game like yesterday. My aunt was in a MNF office pool where you purchase blocks and had the Redskins score ending in 9 and the Cowboys ending with a 5. She knew nothing about football and asked what the odds were of her winning. When told they were not good due to scores rarely ending in 9 and 5, she went to bed. Of course the Redskins were leading 9-3, with the ball, running out the clock. They took a delay of game with three seconds left, then Theisman runs into the end zone for a safety. We stormed my aunt's bedroom and woke her up to tell her she won 25 bucks! What a country. 🙂
Great game and very memorable. I would like to see the final game of the regular season in 76' when the 'Skins' had to win in Dallas to make the playoffs. I remember George Allen tearing down the anti-Redskin signs after the victory. That is the first Redskin-Cowboy game that I remember. I was hooked after that one.
Great quality of video so thanks for posting and this was the last time a current U.S President attended a NFL game and here in 2022 Jimmy and Rosalyn are still alive which is amazing . Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon attended NFL games while they were President as well and Howard Cosell Don Meredith and Frank Gifford are still the best MNF trio ever.
@@patrickmackin3579 I think they encourage the president (any president) to not attend as security needs to be arranged and it can make life tough for the regular fans
The intro music was the spine-chill catalyst in that '78 era (Wash.v.Dal.). That was the best of them all. The two worst teams could be playing, but that incredibly intricate jazz orchestra prelude brought me to the couch to stay for 3 hours. ABC, bring it back
I always loved the Monday Night Football intro ABC was using in the era with the Oakland Raiders helmet being the first one shown because they were the undisputed kings of M Monday Night Football in the 70's!
Howard Cosell gives a great opening monolog, from the description of the two great monuments in DC to the introduction of the President on screen, to the booing is for the Dallas Cowboys and then finishes it off with Dallas vs Washington with President in attendance 👏 I thought it was great and got people interested in the game.
@@tvgator1 Who can forget THIS game? The hated Thiesman running out the clock & taking a safety on the last play of the game while waving the pigskin at the oncoming "Manster"!
Some of the best broadcasters if not the best of all time. Monday Night Football, turn the lights out the party is over. Some that come to mind are( oh my ) Dick Enberg and M.Olsen. Vin Scully and one of the latest and greatest, Madden and Summerall. Can’t forget Curt Gowdy and Brent Mustburger. I will miss them all. They made the game so much better than it was.
I'm a die Hard skins fan unfortunately I was Born in 95' so I didn't get to witness the glory years but man I love this franchise, the history and tradition. And they screwed it up with the C word. HTTR forever.
The Redskins and Cowboys from 1971-1992 was simply the best rivalry in the N.F.L. They won a combined 5 Superbowls in that time frame. This was a fine game but not even close to one their top 10 games in that era!
Top 5. Redskins were doing great at that point in the season and the Cowboys won the Super Bowl the year before and it's on Monday Night with Frank Don and Howard. Top 5.
I don't know. I would put it in the top ten. This was a good one and a key one. Plus it was on the original Monday Night Football and it was at the height of the rivalry. This era of Redskins and Cowboys truly hated each other.
@@tesla-v2681 Only because it was in the Golden age of Monday night football I would consider it a top 10 game between those 2. Believe me, those two had better games in that era.
I was 7 years old when this came out.. I was not yet a full converted Redskin fan.. my team was the Steelers but growing up in a Redskin house it was going to happen.. growing up in Washington DC during these years the whole family was Redskin fans
My dad won the 1978 season tickets in an office pool, Arlington County Highway Planning, and he kept this game and one later in the season against the Miami Dolphins. He picked me up after school/workday, we had pizza at a favorite spot in Arlington, then took the incomplete freeway into the parking lots at RFK. This was an amazing experience. I was 13 years old. Roy Jefferson was seated just a few rows behind us. We were in the home plate corner of the end zone where the safety occurred to end the game. I thought C. Waters was gonna force a fumble. When dad was in his 80’s, I took him to a Nats game at RFK. We sat in the same corner, just a section higher in the stands. I hated when JKC built in Landover, and am now a Packers fan, since the Redskins are no more. Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reliving it in 2023.
I was there. I've only been to five Washington games in my life but this was one of them. I was in end zone seats near where Joe took the safety. Unfortunately that great goal line stand took place at the opposite end of the field. The fans at RFK were crazy loud and raucous in those days. The stands would shake, you'd have thought the stadium was going to come crashing down. This was one of the great regular season wins in Washington history. Been a fan since 1961.
OMG, Howard Cosel and Monday night football in RFK. Couldn't get any better than that. I was at a football camp run by lb Harold McClinton during the summer. Redskins were pretty good that period.
This random game showed up in my feed. Not a fan of either team, but living in the DC area I know all the players from my childhood. Started watching just to see these all-time greats play not knowing who won. I couldn't stop. What a great game.
The old burgundy Redskin jerseys were sharp.. They didn't wear them often thru the 80s and 90s. And now they have these generic helmets and bland Commanderskin jerseys. Makes me nostalgic for this look.
I love sports from the 70s and 80s, hell even the 90s were good. It was the best time for sports, it was after TV came around so you could see a decent amount of games, but before the 24 hour coverage saturated the market and made sports coverage something that makes you want to vomit. There was just enough sports on to get you pumped to see it. Fuck sports today, I can watch for about 5 minutes tops.
I love this. I remember watching this when I was 15 yrs old. The Redskins started the season 6-0, but finished 8-8. This was the first year of the 16-game schedule (1978). The Cowboys won Super Bowl XII and was the powerhouse in the NFC. I thought for sure Roger would do his last minute heroics, but it wasn't to be. Nevertheless, Theismann almost gave it away if he fumbled instead of the safety in the end zone on the very last play of the game.
Watching this game brings back some great memories. I used to live in Virginia and went to 2 games at RFK. I started watching Monday night football in 1972 and I watched almost every game and I was a die hard NFL Monday night football fan because at age 10 living in Virginia the game started at 9PM to midnight.
Don Meredith: "these two guys (Landry & Pardee as players) didn't know how so much so they kept asking why and I guess they make good coaches when they keep asking why" These announcers are great. Meredith is underrated as an analyst. But Frank did screw up and call it "JFK STADIUM" several times...
I was a kid and was a little abnoyed at Thiesman at the end. Instead of tucking the ball in and running out the endzone, he held it up where it could have easilly been knocked out of his hand .
41:08 nice DIRECT SHOT at Landry by Don Meredith here; those two didn't always get along. Also, remember the movie NORTH DALLAS FORTY came out at right about this time (1978) in theatres and it was loosely (or not so loosely) based on the Dallas Cowboys and Landry's coaching style. Love that comment....
ABC Sports had a busy day on this Monday. That afternoon ABC broadcast the famous Yankees/Red Sox one game playoff from Boston. In addition Howard Cosell had a busy week. After this game he flew to Kansas City for the ALCS Game 1.
Jake Scott was a great football player. Can’t believe Shula ever let him leave Miami. Mistakes like that kept the Dolphins at a 2nd tier of the better teams but not the best.
Cowboys and Redskins had great epic games in the 70’s and 80’s,, RFK stadium had a unbelievable atmosphere for Football games especially with great Redskins fans and great Redskins teams,,,Greatest Rivalry of football is the Cowboys and Redskins,,,
People like myself and others will always remember the rivalry,, today’s NFL or the last 10 to 12 years has been a shell of their former self and totally unwatchable. I choose to remember the real NFL from the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s , I guess the first few years of the early 00’s wasn’t that bad…
@@mgomez5606 Yeah I totally agree, today’s players are just there for a paycheque and endorsements so. they can buy a mansion or two and some Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s,,,
@@uncletony6210 I stopped watching a few years ago when all the kneeling started combined with the fact that the players can't seem to stay out of jail. They forgot who their customers were.
ESPN wrecked Monday Night Football And helped wreck the NFL. Cosell is awesome, not worried about offending anyone and tells it like it is. Mosley bangs a 52 yarder. Thank you so much for posting.. I can't believe how much in enjoyed watching this..
At 0:34 the guy in the blue leisure suit is Special Agent Robert Wanko, aka the guy holding the uzi after Reagan was shot. He passed away on July 11th 2023.
This was the greatest rivalry except for maybe Bears Packers these two teams hated each other unlike today it’s not the same. The 70s and 80s were such a great times. I miss them. I miss Gifford Cosell and Meredith …in the DC area I miss listening to Sonny and Sam broadcasts. Such great memories
Oh dear mother of god!!! I've been looking for this game forever, you have outdone yourself. Your last two posts have been very rare games, and very good quality as well. How will you top these last two posts, it will be tough to find better/ rarer games. thanks
That was real stupid of Theismann running to the end zone like that, he could have fumbled the ball or something and they could lost the game in such a stupid way.
@@thefrase7884 I'm so glad I don't watch any of the four main sports today, I'd rather use my time productively and go out for a burger or pizza...Time well spent...
