Great, high quality video. This was the only game my dad and I went to together. I was only 9 at the time, but remember it so well. So exciting but so disappointing that the Cowboys lost their first game that night in a nail biter. Very surreal to watch a game from so long ago that you know a much younger you is in the stands.

This was my dreamed Super Bowl back in those days! Two teams with their own true DNA 🧬, the good ones vs the bad ones. I watched on tv with my late dad.
It's my favorite NFL matchup. As long as the two teams have their wits about them and they're not going through a rough season, it's good. Their thanksgiving game from 3 years ago was great.
It's great to see Too Tall vs Henry Lawrence whom went to the Pro Bowl this year. Randy White going against Charley Hannah just some great line-ups in this game. Cowboys LB Dickerson had himself a rough first half. What a great game this was and I remember watching this, in 83 I was in 8th grade. I'm a lifelong Steeler fan but that 83 Raider team , damn they were good.
Mike Haynes made that defense even stronger, but it had an incredible front 7. Kinlaw at Nose, Alzado and Long at the 3-4 End positions, Bob Nelson and Matt Millen inside, Kickem in the Head Ted and Rod Martin at outside linebackers. Then you had Greg Townsend and Bill Pickel coming in for 3rd down and Long moving around the front. It really was a great defense. Marc Wilson really was an enigma; he did not seem to read in front of throws well and often ended up getting intercepted, it was a shame how his career went.
The mad stork Hendricks was still there, as well as Matt Millen. Raiders might not have lost a game that entire season except for inconsistent QB play.
@@soxpacker Yeah...Jones and Toran(RIP) came in '84. The Raiders were definitely LOADED from 80-85. They at least should have had 1 more SB appearance in the 80's.

I agree 100%. We all love the soul patrol of the 70s led by Jack Tatum. But van McIlroy had great closing speed was a true ballhawk and never missed a tackle.

Raiders were always a contender when I was young. Lamonica, Stapler, Plunkett all were good. Sistrunk , Villapiano, Lester the molster, Atkinson, Assasin Tatum. Madden s defensive teams were good, the 80/83defense was better. Might want to send the Browns a big Ty for giving the Raiders Alzado
The silver superbowl is the one combination that never happened. The odds of two great teams like this not meeting , especially in the 60s through 80s seems unlikely

It's not some conspiracy theory or phenomenon that they didn't meet up with the Cowboys.. it's just that the Raiders fans spin how good they were. The boys were the Packers bitch in the late 60s. That explains that. They also got old in the early 80s. That's why Phil/SF/Wash were all better by then. That leaves the '70s for the two to meet up. Miami went to three sups and the Steelers to four. That about wraps the decade. Denver in '77? Better than the Raiders. The Colts in '70? Better than the Raiders. Ironically, the ONE super bowl in the '70s the Raiders did make, they shouldn't have because New England actually beat them until Ref Ball came into play. When U finally got there you could have met Dallas, Minn, or LA. U got the hapless Vikings. Again, thems the breaks. It's not some conspiracy or anything it's just fans get a narrative going and they beat it into the ground. NO! No Raiders/Cowboys super bowls. It was never the Very Good Bowl, it was the SUPER bowl. @@tracyisbest Denver got lucky because of the Rob Lytle fumble. That was the one year it should have been Raiders and Cowboys and that would have been an absolute classic. Just as much as the Steelers and Cowboys super bowls in the 70s.
Thats gna be me when i get older. Im 29. But some of the bad ass Raider games i got to watch thru TV is gna feel so long ago to me too. Even if my generation for the last 20 years hasnt seen anything special. The Old School Dominance is what im proud to be apart of. Cant wait to get that feeling as a Raiders Fan. Loved my 80's raiders, even when they have like 5 turnovers they could still win against any team, let alone a very good team! And Marc Wilson left a lot to be desired.
Wilson was straight garbage. They kept showing Plunketts sad face. Im sure he can't believe a guy that couldn't carry his jockey strap is on the field ahead of him
After viewing a number of these old games for a few years now, I feel the best ones are those from the regular season schedule. Unlike many of the playoff games we choose to watch, we often know what team is going to win, due to the fact we really followed the league back in those days. Unless we have Data like memory or a handy time portal, we can enjoy these regular season games from start to finish as if it was yesterday; just as long as we don't dare look at the comments right away. This game was truly one of a kind. I've seen a few others that were also the complete unedited broadcast from the booth. Like a few comments noted, this was epic in itself. A person could write a small book of NFL trivia from this game alone. One for the record books alright.
I always thought that was the missing Super Bowl in the 70's Raiders /Cowboys, could you imagine. If it wasn't for the bogus non fumble call on the Denver RB (Lytle) in the AFC championship game...then it might have happened. The tree goofs of the NFL...Immaculate reception, the Lytle Fumble and the Tuck rule game...just insane.

There were actually several just-misses between the Raiders and Cowboys. In 1970, Dallas made it to Superbowl 5, but the Raiders lost in the AFC Championship game. In 1973, both teams lost in their respective championship games. In 1975, Dallas made it again, but the Raiders lost in the AFC Championship game again. 1977's Lytle fumble has been well-documented. In 1980, the Raiders made it to the Superbowl, but Dallas lost in the NFC Championship game to the Eagles.
If anyone Pete Rozelle couldn't stand in the NFL it was Al Davis. It wouldn't surprise me if Rozelles dislike of Davis explained some of those calls? The tuck rule was the worse call I've ever seen
Loved the MNF crew. Don Meredith was the biggest Dallas homer and who can forget OJ? Man, his commentary was always sharp, like a hot knife through butter, never taking the kid gloves off in his critiques which were consistently on point.
Wilson always had a fascinating delivery to me. He was a tall dude, and had this big overhand throwing motion...but not a ton of velocity. He aimed the ball...but didn't get a ton of zip Billy Bates! Damn forgot he was there as early as 1983! Marcus Allen could be such a smooth runner. He glided great uni matchup too And this took place right after the 83 Beirut Marine barrackd tragedy. Gifford mentions it a few times😢
Football in its golden era. Back when MNF was truly must see TV. Always loved watching the efficient Cowboys offense throughout the 70s and early 80s. Just a well schooled, disciplined team they were with Landry at the helm. Dallas had such a great backfield. Dorsett...Newhouse...Springs. What a beautiful pass TO White lol

I noticed how few penalties were called versus nowadays (2024) and how low profile the officials were. Today, the refs are higher profile, as are the teams' offensive and defensive coordinators. I prefer the Old School...all the way back to the 1960s.
@@jdobbs7700 Same. I think the refs really tried (not that there wasnt controversy at times) to make sure the games were decided on the field not by the officials. The ticky tack nonsense was not called as much during critical junctures Plus I love that there isnt an NFL camera on every square inch of the field recording and hyper analyzing and reviewing every play x1000
These two played a previous game on MNF in December, 1974 and quite a game it was. The 1983 season would be the last Super Bowl year for the Raiders until 2002 (they were eliminated early in 1984 and '85). This was an excellent high scoring shootout and nice to see it again. Greg Pruitt by this time an elder statesman of the game still showed his 1970s magic thru the year with some excellent kick returns. Final season for Cowboy receiver Drew Pearson before his retirement.
How this never materialized as a Super Bowl match-up is amazing. From 1967 thru 1980, six times the Raiders & Cowboys found themselves on opposite sides of the playoff bracket in their respective Conference Championship Games, and not once did they both win.
I was thinking at first this was a mistake because there was no SNF in 1983 but it looks like it a special edition of Monday Night Football. Good to see OJ. Lol

This game means everything to Washington and nothing to the Giants but Parcells in an amazing coaching performance makes dam sure the Giants came to play. And boy did they, it's LT VS RIGGO it's rain and mud and cold, it's Parcells vs Gibbs and to cap it all off it's Summeral & Madden..... anyone who has one let me know...I will love to watch it... I was 7 when this aired, watching with my brothers and Dad, Mom making Toll House cookies for tomorrow for school lunch. 80s were the best! At the time we just thought it was all normal, no wars, economy decent to good again, Tv and movies were awesome, MTV, and NFL football in the fall and winter. Miss it but I make the best now that I am in my 40s
This was the SB of the mid season..Raiders go on to win SB..Cowboys fell last 3 games of the season.. two against Washington who got blown out in SB by Raiders and Dolphins on last Monday Night Football in Miami. Dallas defense was not very good down the stretch and it ended Cowboys NFL record playoff run of 9 straight.. Dallas would miss playoffs in 1984 but make it in 1985 losing to the Rams in Tom Landrys last playoff game... ❤

Yes, football is the ultimate team game, especially given the fact that in this particular game, several Hall of Famers are on display for both teams. But look at the difference between the two starting QB's. Jim Plunkett won two super bowls with the Raiders, while Danny White, even though he was a very good QB, unfortunately had the stigma of not being able to take Dallas to the Super Bowl. Remember, Danny went 0 and 3 in three straight NFC Championship Games from 1980 through 1982. But Danny is a college football Hall Of Famer. Arizona State Sun Devils, you make Tempe proud, Danny !
At least he won a ring in SB XIII as a punter and Staubach's backup. Unfortunately for White the Cowboys were just not quite good enough in those three years, they were probably the second or third best team in the league each time.
Raiders would have played Dallas in 1977 but. For the fumble by Rob Lytle that was over turned on the goal line gave Denver another play to score the points that put that put Denver in Superbowl.

The MNF crew saw, in back to back games, 2 of the most craziest, offense-minded games in history. On the previous MNF game, the Packers had beaten the Redskins 48-47.
When I was young I hated the Cowboys like nearly everyone else I knew. But at some point I realized that hating the Cowboys was the equivalent of being in a cult, and there was no logical reason to hate them. Now when I see people hating the Cowboys I feel kind of sorry for them. Life is too short--free yourself! But after leaving that cult, I got into another one: hating the Packers. And I admit I'm still not completely deprogrammed from that one!
Never understood why when Texas Stadium was built it wasn't determined that the roof wouldn't support a retractable design so they had to leave the hole in the roof. Couldn't they have designed a roof to allow this retractable design?

Something about a Raider v Cowboys in the SB always seemed epic and magical. Too bad it never happen. Was close a couple times. The Broncos beat the Raiders in 1977. Had the Raiders got past the Broncos in 1977 it would have been a Raider v Cowboys Sb in 1977. A Raider v Cowboy in 1977 would have been far more competitive and probably been one of the better Super Bowls. Probably would have been a close, down to the wire game, with one of the teams pulling it out in the end. One of those Super Bowls, that would have been sort of a cult classic, with both teams probably having mutual respect. The Raiders probably would leave the game as fans of Staubach, and there would have been all kinds of memorable plays. Kind of reminded me of liking some gal in high school, but for some reason it just wasn’t meant to be.
Blientikoff of the Raiders wore #25 & Ahmad Rashad wore #28 with the Vikings. They were all Wingbacks that's why. Harold Carmichael the WR of the Eagles wore #17. Don't know how that was allowed

Sitting about four rows in front of me the was a Raider fan who was getting really loud and obnoxious to a Cowboy fan sitting behind him. The Cowboy fan asked him to calm down, he ignored him, a couple minutes later he did it again but to the guy's wife, Cowboy fan stood up and knocked him out, the stadium security came, and everybody pointed at the Raider fan, and he got to watch the game on a tv.

the way the cowboys opened the 83 season. the way they beat the redskins and went 7 and 0 i thought a hundred percent for sure they were going to the super bowl it was so shocking and dissapointing the way they ended the season losing the wild card game
Those last 3yrs the D was becoming like SD defense in the early 80s (High powered Fouts and Co covered for it). Dallas D, expecially media did not care or talk about - cause of their Fn brand. OAK, was hitting and kicking on both sides as if they were still in their cell.
Great game, although the commentary was pathetic. So slow and constantly calling the wrong players. It was hard to follow who was actually playing with these 3 talking. IDK if if was the way they did it back in the 80's, but I am SO glad for professional announcers instead of these former players/talking heads. BTW, kudos on the high quality video. 3 thumbs up !
I much prefer the commentaries from the 70's and 80's. Tony Romo commentating will always make me turn off. But you are totally right about the calling of the wrong players.
Gifford was a good play by play man. Even when Howard Cosell was in the booth he let Frank Gifford do the play by play. "Dandy" Don Meredith was there to be a character. No comment on the 3rd person in the booth
Satellite feeds are incredible! I have never heard a MNF before. Is this OJs first game? It has got to be. Him and Namath were really bad. I remember this game like yesterday . It was the week after the Green Bay Washington epic game. This was a Sunday Night Special game. 01:58 Frank is talking about how OJ is doing.
Yes, back then watching the satellite feeds was awesome. Listening to the announcers talking amongst themselves and to others allowed you to hears some great sound bites.
This game is one of those "instant classics", with all the future HoF's and All-Pros on both sides and sidelines. A great game to look back on. However, Marc WIlson was such a terrible QB. His 1st rd draft pick was a waste with more than a few future Pro-Bowlers still on the board AND THEN, the biggest waste of all was the Raiders - specifically Al Davis - not picking Dan Marino since Wilson was still considered the QB to keep at the time. I still get headaches when I think about that and the possible "what-ifs" related to it.
YOU'RE REALLY NOT GONNA LIKE THIS ONE: Al Davis had a trade setup with the Baltimore Colts & the Bears to acquire John Elway!! That trade was Done on draft day and Pete Rozelle vetoed the trade. He made the Bears cancel it at the last minute
I hate to break it to Don Meredith, but the Cowboys would not go undefeated. They'd lose this game to the Raiders, 38-40, and go on to finish the season with a 12-4 record, losing the NFC East to the Redskins. The Cowboys would make the playoffs as the #4 seed wild card, but they wouldn't make it past the Wild Card game, losing to the Rams 24-17, while the Redskins would go on to win the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, 24-21, but lose to the Raiders, 38-9, in Super Bowl XVIII.
For arm to the head the ref called 37:00 if the cowboys defender wouldn't did that today in a game against a qb they would had kick him out the game and gave him a million dollars fine time change smh
