1978 Snooker World Championship Review

Alan Weeks presents the championship round-up. The Fred Davis montage had the Beatles 'When I'm 64' playing, but EMI/Apple blocked the video worldwide. You'll have to play it yourself or find a suitable replacement, such as Prodigy's Firestarter.

@@duncanbirss8923 It's because "the data" tells them that they maintain more consistently higher viewing figures when people are constantly being stimulated. Being quiet and allowing people to just observe anything without constantly being talked at, told what to think about it and distracted from potential boredom in many, is not wanted by studios and producers now. Same as why everything else is so hyperactive and relentless now. Did you also know that the main reason why diving and faking fouls and injuries in football is in fact encouraged and trained into the game so much now? Because the longer matches can be extended with extra time, the more advertising revenue gets made... seriously.

The golden age, you had it all back then, old masters who were passed ego and just enjoying a moment in the sun now tv had gatecrashed their previously solitary world, journeymen, right down to young ambitious 'nose-down' types, all these different strains gave it all balance, nowadays it's all stiffs with the occasional Ronnie lol

Simpler times, loved this era from the 70s to the 80s,.....from the swashbuckling flair of the likes of Higgins and white ,...to the immaculate all round players like Reardon , Spencer , Griffiths and Thorburn.....and the dominance of Davis,...great times, wonderful memories

To see the brief interview with the great Joe Davis made my day. His signature two piece cue was the first I owned in 1980. Laminated ash and the first cue I made a fifty break with. It stood out at our local little sports store like a diamond amongst coal. Outstanding memories, thanks MJT.

This is wonderful footage. The great Fred Davis was really the star of the ‘78 Championship, reaching the semi-finals at 64. A WWII veteran who went on to lift 8 World titles between 1948 and 56 - what a remarkable achievement it would’ve been to reach the final some 22 years later. Fred was in every respect a far more complete player than Perrie but faded badly in the second session to trail 8-14. It was still a fine effort to lose only 16-18.
@RobinHood5045
@RobinHood5045 4 года назад
I couldn't agree more with you about Fred Davis. I think he certainly was one of the greats of Snooker. He was also in the next World Championship and scored a century in his match against Kirk Stevens. It would have been interesting if Fred had won his semi-final and played Ray Reardon in the final.
@chrisbland6942
@chrisbland6942 4 года назад
@@RobinHood5045 I feel Ray would’ve probably had too much for old Fred. It was Perrie’s fantastic long potting and unorthodox style that frustrated Ray for long periods. In the end, Perrie just couldn’t sustain it for three days enabling Reardon’s far superior break building to demoralise him.
@dlamiss

Its true everyone knows the story about the missed pink but there was no guarantee he would have won the match but still a great effort to reach the semi finals at 64
@chrisbland6942

@@dlamiss No, indeed he'd still have been 15-16 behind. That said, he had the momentum firmly in his favour having recovered from 8-14 down. Even as it was he won the next two to pull up to trail only 16-17 before Mans scored his highest break of the match - 60.

At 12-10 up he just needed yellow and green to leave Fagan needing a snooker, he played a ridiculous positional shot to the green instead of just rolling them both in, ended up missing the green. Obviously going for a clearance, that was the difference between his style of play and the likes of Steve Davis and the reason he lost so many matches when he should have won.

Spot on the Snookerist! Todays players are all just dull, soulless, bland, boring robots without an ounce of personality between them, sure the standard of the actual snooker may be a lot higher but the entertainment level is practically zero and the players today I feel just don't engage with the general public anymore because they all just look and act exactly the same as one another whereas every player here and in the 1980s each had his own individual personality and character and most importantly, you cared about them more and wanted to know more about them, sadly snooker will never get those days back but just watch footage like this the Snookerist and remember how great snooker used to be, all the best Richie.
