The #2 Alabama Crimson Tide traveled to Grant Field in Atlanta, GA to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. It was the 1979 season opener for both teams. This was the first meeting between these two old rivals since 1964, when the series was suspended by Georgia Tech leaving the SEC.

Under Bear Bryant, this yrs team 1979, 2 qbs got most of the snaps, unlike 1978 when Jeff Rutledge got most of em. Sheely and Jacobs. Don Jacobs was hurt in the Iron Bowl, leaving them with just Sheely for the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas.

Josh Wall senior Steadman Sheely #10, and junior Don Jacobs #5.
