Afghanistan is the first battlefield with global terrorism. The Soviet Union was the first to launch a global anti-terrorist war against radical Islamism. After all, we were not just neighbors with Afghanistan, we were friends with them. We helped Afghanistan. But they always tried to quarrel us... Only now we understand that even back then, people from the CIA, under the guise of an Islamic revival, were actually arming and funding future terrorists. And when we are asked who we fought in Afghanistan, now, years later, we can say with certainty that we fought with those who would later blow up the World Trade Center... Just one example would suffice: Osama bin Laden fought against us in that Afghan war. But of course, the fighters of the Soviet Special Forces in late December 1979 had no idea about any of this. They were simply following orders. They were supposed to take an impregnable fortress on a mountain top.
