This describes how to start safely testing your Bryston 4B (old model) after replacing power transistors, insulators, electrolyitc capacitors and the bias trimpot.
Start by using two series adjustable power supplies with current limiting function. Check distortion , adjust bias current. Only then move on to full AC input voltage testing. An oscilloscope and tone generator are needed. You could also use an variac (adjustable transformer) if you have one.
Until sure that everything is working I used a 1,5A fuse (the external one).
The pdf with the checkout procedure for this model can currently be found here: www.bryston.com/PDF/Other/3B_4B_Pre-NRB_TECH_REF.pdf

I have an old 3b amplifier, the 4 transistors are all shorted, may I ask could you give me some guide to trace the issue? Thanks.

I have a Bryston 3B that runs warm on left channel. There is no DC voltage on speaker terminals when checked with multi-meter. It runs good with no distortion but gets very warm within 5 mins. Could this be the trim pot bias voltage

So why are you replacing the transistors and not just the caps?

Great video! I'm in the process of repairing a very old 3B amp myself. I'm having a difficult time locating power transisters. I would appreciate it if you could suggest where? thanks

Do you think its ok to remove a side and do this same test with the bench psu whilst it is not connected to the back board?

Thank you once again! You are incredibly kind and generous with you time! I decided to fix the amp first and then test the power supply ripple voltage to determine if I need to change them! Do you remember by any chance any info on the small electrolytic caps that you used? Any brand you recommend! I see that the are 4 blue ones and 2 gray! Once again! Thank you very much for your valuable time!!!!😀

No sorry can't remember. There aren't that many options of the axial type though. Choose one with the highest temp rating and permitted ripple current you can find.

Hey TomTechTod can I ask a question any information about WB Callipers? and Wbt amps?

Once again thank you very much for your valuable time! What percentage of the power supply voltage would you consider an acceptable ripple voltage? World the ripple voltage be the AC voltage across the DC rail voltage and ground???

You can source these darlington type transistors from other amps as they use similar types
@tomtechtod9200

Good idea. This was actually the first and hopefully the last time I repaired one of those. xD

I get the feeling, i had this amplifier once, which my mate now has and one of the channels were down on it, it turned out to be a shorted output mosfet, so i removed that particular mosfet now that channel sort of works but crackles and im not sure what it is, do you think some of the other mosfets may be damaged?
@tomtechtod9200
@tomtechtod9200 7 лет назад
If we are talking about the same amp the output transistors are bipolar types not mosfets. If it crackles I'd rather say it might be the old potentiometer in the back, but that would usually go away with some contact spray, at least for a little while. I don't think a crackling sound could come from a damaged transistor but rather passive components like resistors or capacitors or bad solder joints.
@tyronenelson9124

no its a totally different more modern amp using mosfets for the outputs

The setup manual is confusing.. Part B-5 says to set bias to 4-6 mV, input shorted, full AC input, , but then the burn section says 12-15 mv bias.. as final adjustment after burn in. Which is it? Your vid shows only 4-6mv bias setting. thanks
@tomtechtod9200
@tomtechtod9200 7 лет назад
efzauner I would set it to the lowest safe value possible. The value will change with main DC voltage and probably also with temperature. I would start with lower DC voltage as in the video then move over to nominal DC voltage then starting from room temperature up to maybe 70 deg Celsius and never allow the drop to be lower than 5mV. You could go higher but then distortion will increase at the zero crossing. Not that I would be able to hear that though. :-)

Hello! Thank you for shearing your experience! Besides cost, is there any reason why you didn't replace the large power supply 7500uf caps??? And also the driver transistors which are very cheap and quite old! Thank you once again!
@tomtechtod9200
@tomtechtod9200 6 лет назад
Yes, mainly for cost reasons. I wouldn't replace semiconductors unless they are defective or they were definitely subjected to voltages/currents beyond their maximum stress ratings
@Joche321
@Joche321 6 лет назад
Thank you very much for your response! I truly appreciated! So despite the fact that the 7500 µF power supply capacitors are 40 years old they do not necessarily need to be replaced? If so that is good news because they are very expensive! I was wondering if you tested the ones on the unit that you repaired?Once again thank you very much for your valuable time!

I can't remember but I probably tested for ripple voltage under full load and it wasn't out of the ordinary. What was the voltage rating of these caps?
@Tinybench
@Tinybench 6 лет назад
I have the 3B model and the caps are 50V and 75V max surge. The rails are +&- 50v What percentage of the rail voltage would you consider an ok ripple voltage at rated power? Can I obtain the ripple it by measuring the AC voltage at the DC rails? Once again thank you very much!!!
@tomtechtod9200
@tomtechtod9200 6 лет назад
I can't say a value for ripple, sorry. A meter measuring AC on the DC would do probably, as long as it's low frequency, depends on the meter spec too. I'd apply low frequency sine wave to input. Ideal is an oscilloscope. 7500uF or 8200uF / 50V to 63V caps can be had at Digikey for 5 to 40 USD each. To find something comparable to what's in the amp you should pull their specs.

Good man. You repaired a fantastic amp. The 4b of that era used to hammer hard. A true discotheque component. Well done.

I am not an audiophile but I have to admit, the sound is better than anything else I have. It's only the semiconductor assembly that sucks...

why did you change transistors ? do you have a list of parts ? i am looking on digikey
@tomtechtod9200

I think it was because the 2N types weren't available. Also on DK they linked to the MJ15003/15004 when looking up the 2N...

hello I have a cheap 200$ pyle 2000 watts amp...what can I do to beef up the capacitors transistor voltage regulator and diode, I don't want more wattage ? and what is the outcome of that ?
@tomtechtod9200
@tomtechtod9200 6 лет назад
I don't get the question. If it's working don't touch it. If it's faulty it probably isn't worth repairing a $200 amp.
