SWEET RIDE! I used to ride many of those when they were still in revenue service in Seattle. I gotta get back down there when this bus is being used again. Those things were powerful!

When I was a little kid, an Operator on Route 210, opened the door while on the freeway and told me that if I got anywhere near the door, he'd close it. One of the memories that made me into the transit geek I am today.

Memories of 1987- taking the 317 shuttle to Aurora village, running in to Woolworths to get an Icee, and back out to the bus before it left.

Cummins VTB903s were also used in some Grumman Flxible 870 buses made during that model's "dark" early period (referring to when they were recalled for stiff framework).

The Grumman 870 buses from 1977-1981 the engine sound like this one, but right before they reverted back to the Flxible name in mid 1983 they sound like the GMC new look buses of that period and so did the GMC RTS in 1982.

Man this sound resembles the 8V71 engine a whole lot. Gotta love it!

I'd say it sounds more like the Caterpillar 3208T. Detroit Diesel 8V71 was way louder and more angry sounding.

Not even close. These were way better. I rode a Torrance Transit D901 with the same combo, and I liked it way better than the 8V71. Detroit is known screamers, but nothing gets those juices flowing better than a growling Cummins. Even the roar of the L-10 don't have shit on this

Neither do I. In the earlier years this engine was not turbocharged.

At first, I thought this bus was powered with a Detroit Diesel 8V71 2-stroker like most buses were at that time. I never knew there were old Flyer buses powered with 4-stroke Cummins engines! Guess you learn something new everyday, huh?

I do not know why this engine, was not put into motorcoaches. A 903 cubic inch V8, would have shot a MC-9 up a hill like noting. It seem like this engine, was wasted with mostly transit buses.

It might have to do with the oversquare bore/stroke ratio: 5.5" bore x 4.75" stroke. Some parts did interchange with Cummins' 14-liter N series six-cylinder diesels.
