The problem has been that NBA teams continue to draft and pay million dollar salaries to teenagers. I don't blame the players, it's the fault mostly of the NCAA and their plantation policies and the NBA in their ignorance of realizing that young players simply haven't played enough high level games with vigorous coaching with real critique to reflect the value of their contracts. All the players on this game played at least three seasons of college hoops, if not four. That game experience and maturity leads to smarter and more devoted team play.
BRINGING BACK MEMORIES. WHEN THE NBA ALL STAR GAME WAS WORTH WATCHING. RIP MR WALTER the Greyhound DAVIS. MR PAUL WESTPHAL. BOB LAINER and MAURICE LUCAS. PETE MARAVICH. MOSES MALONE. THANK YOU ALL for YOUR TALENT. GOD BLESS YOU 😢😢😢😢
I truly think pistol Pete would have been in the top five of NBA scoring of all time, along with the iceman. Had there been a three point line in their day
Great National Anthem by a Great Group. They didn't try to over do it or put their own twist on it. Just went out and nailed the song . Fantastic Four Tops!
I was thinking the same. That all changed after the '84 All-Star Game when Marvin Gaye sung his rendition and the "twists" haven't stopped for the last almost 40 years.
@@DjcHuCkNiCe1 The "twists" are just an indication of nature and change over time (if you've ever heard of entropy in physics you might see a connection there). A root grows.. and .. after time passes.. naturally twists.
@@BAKER22-l4uYou'd be Amazed at how many alive DON'T KNOW.... not even interested in anything beyond their decade of being alive...very little concept of historical reality...
~ childhood memories for me. I was born and raised in Baltimore. My pops was a Bullets fan. They used to come back and play a few regular season games every year in Baltimore. The first game I saw live was a “Divisional” game between the Spurs and Washington Bullets. I was confused as a child. In fact for a few years before the NBA realigned.
Bird , Magic and Jordan didn't affect the way ball was played , only the marketing of the league. Rule changes are what altered the way the game was played.
Iceman & David Thompson every year gunning for the scoring title. Iceman didn't shoot as much as David did, he was mostly looking to find the open man, but when he decided to shoot the ball it went in. David played better defense but Iceman had better shots, especially shooting from the hip.
Yeap real defense and now today its nothing but a layup derby going to the basket and three point shooting gus williams and Michael ray Richardson were outstanding defenders back then as well
I remember when teams in the Eastern conference played defense, especially Detroit. They should also bring back hand checking , illegal defense rule and get rid of the three seconds without guarding trash rule.@@tombrad9950
As great as it was for the league, the 80s and more so the 90s took away from what had been a great game in my old man opinion. The 70s was far more exciting than what happened when Michael Jordan came of age and took over the league. The early 80s with Lakers/ Celtics renewed rivalry was admittedly , a magnificent thing to watch. Btw.. what a line up this game had!!!
@@vinceyoung5912 Yeah it WAS an IMAGE problem... you'll NEVER convince me the NFL and Pro Baseball didn't have just as much of a drug problem... Sure didn't seem to affect those leagues much in terms of lost prestige.... But perception is reality I guess...
@@brettrobinson2901 oh I agree. A good movie is North Dallas Forty. The Hollywood Cowboys were known for debauchery. Septien had a 16 year old girlfriend
As of 2024, this is the last time Detroit has hosted an NBA All-Star Game. I think Little Caesar's Arena is due to host it at some point in the near future. Unless they want to host it at Ford Field.
Look how serious everyone looks during the introductions, some smiling, but looking like they're about to go to work, which they are. Today they would just be goofing around like little kids
Calvin's only ASG. He was jobbed out of about 4 others(Musberger obliquely refers to this in his intro), this selection was almost a "makeup" because the NBA finally realized how he had been screwed over. He was having a very good year, but he had several others that were incredible and he was overlooked. It's really a shame, because there are people now who like to point out that he was only a "one time" all star and because of that doesn't deserve to be in the HOF. Fact is, he should have been a 5 time AS and was one of the greatest college players of all time. Yeah, it's the "Basketball HOF", not the NBA HOF. Those people can't read, either.
Many put down the 70's in regard to the NBA. It was such a different time, everything was more laid back and fun. The league had issues during that time, including a bad drug problem. Playoff games were on tape delay - including the championship outside of DC and Seattle. Still, most of the players had passion and cared, today, the league is a joke.
Wow, is really really sad that I enjoy the hell out of this footage , today’s NBA, especially the All-Star game has become extremely unwatchable. These guys are actually playing defense in an All-Star game.
I went to that game. When I drove up to the Silverdome, it was crazy. People and cars EVERYWHERE! GREAT game. Still have the ticket stub. Sold the ptogram as it US ugly. A silver program. Some moron designed it. Like the 1971 Detroit MLB allstar program. Almost all white ? including a kid and player. UGH!
Notice how the game is totally devoid of James Hardin/Kyrie Irving style ball dominant bs. Sound fundamental ball didn't allow for a lot of the crap fans are watching today.
In college. Indiana State was undefeated to a record breaking season & ranked #1. Michigan State the preseason #1 was struggling to get a share of the Big 10 championship just to make the tournament
@@dabneyoffermein595 No. No 😂. That shows the greatness of Bird. Since 1979 Indiana State made 1 NCAA Tournament. Before Larry Bird they never made the tournament. Michigan State had 3 All Americans and Bird was a 1 man team
The lack of star power in those lineups is incredible. This really underlines how much trouble the NBA was in before Magic and Bird and later Jordan came along.
come on now- pistol dt doc kareem big e moses and the ice man all had star power... but the nba kinda frowned on the street style above the rim athleticism at that the time- they wanted you to be able to play structured fundamental ball- thats what the 77 blazers/sixers series was all about- in a few more years the nba would learn to market wide open up and down offense. magic and bird both had to sort of coerce their respective teams to take the handcuffs off...
There was PLENTY of "Star Power." I personally think some of the problem was the stale nba refusing to adopt the ABA 3 point line for years after the 1976 (Massacre) Merger.
You compare the lineup of this NBA All Star Game to that of the 1988 NBA All Star Game lineup and you can see how much the NBA grew in just those 9 years.
And anyone that knows history knows NBA of this era was on same level as NHL and maybe even below NHL. The games were on tape delays, mostly gamblers watched and this era the players were all coked out of their mind. It's no mystery that Magic and Bird saved the NBA .everyone knows it
@@1AllenBlack No. Most of these players would not fit into today’s fast pace. If they somehow made it to today’s league most would be handing out water.
It’s funny that the NBA has placed the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs in the Eastern Conference since they are geographically west of the Mississippi River at the time.
There is such a fight tonmakensure the NBA stencil remains an androgynous body. Watch the next time they show it (if you haven't already noticed), and you will see a *SPLIT SECOND* of girl's hair on the icon before it quickly morphs to a man's head.
