The eight inning of game four. The high tide for the Orioles and the World Series in their grasp. Ironically and seemingly incredibly after this game for Baltimore, it was over for them after a three game collapse.
It was looking good through four innings of the fifth game. After that, not so good. Had the Orioles won game two - they should have - they would have won the series.
@@zephead843 Game two was a huge defeat no doubt. I was thinking also how in 1971 and '79 we never saw Jim Palmer pitch at Three Rivers Stadium. All his starts were at Memorial Stadium where he pitched well in all four games.
@@searchforthestrangler5034 Interesting observation about Palmer. I didn't know that. I also didn't know that McGregor could switch hit and was a better hitter in high school than George Brett The Orioles lit Tekulve up in game 4, which was gratifying to say the least. After that he was unhittable. The '79 WS is my all time favorite, even better than '86.
The Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium had the best organist. When Jim Morrison a utility ballplayer who played for the Pirates in the 80's they used to play jingles from the Doors
Tim Stoddard was the unsung hero of this game. After playing in the majors for 4 seasons, he got his first ML at bat in game 4, got a hit, drove in the go ahead run and was the winning pitcher for game 4. Orioles lost the series but returned in 1983 and Stoddard was still on the team and received Championship Ring. Stoddard is only man to receive Championship rings in two sports. He was starting forward for NC State in 1974 NCAA champions Men’s basketball (Thompson, Towe, Burlerson, Mo Rivers) and 83 MLB WS Champions Orioles.
@@davidsonlankford1168 I commented that the Pirateds won the '79 WS but I took it down. The Orioles won in '83 BTW. Good story about Stoddard though. Did you know his nickname during his time with the Orioles? BIGFOOT
"El Perfeto" Denis Martinez When he was a young weeper snapper. I remember this day. It was a Sunday in 1979. I was 11 years old and it was a holiday in my beloved country. The first Nicaraguan in the World Series. Greeting from Managua Nicaragua. Thank you for the memories
I wonder why, there seems to be perfect picture watching this video yet all the writing on the screen such as up coming game times, College/Pro Football 🏈 scores are never shown on this video. Do you all notice this in this World Series?
That's probably because this was major league baseball original broadcast not NBC.... But yeah the picture is perfectly clear for a 1979 world series...
I was 100 percent certain it was in the bag for the Orioles after beating the Pirates here in Game 4. Thanks for posting, but man, this brings back some painful memories.
Couldn't agree with you more after this Saturday afternoon game four following the late Friday game three win. Baltimore wins this series expecting on Sunday. Unbelievable. By the way who won that Texas-Oklahoma game that day?
@@05steelersrule08 Thanks Pittsburgh for the score of that college football game. Ahh, 1979. The Pirates win the World Series, Steelers continue their dynasty and then the Penguins decide to change colors to black and gold which Bruins play by play man Fred Cusick back then would say those stolen Bruins colors.
In 79 and 81 ABC split the play by play assignment. Keith Jackson did the games during the week and Al Michales did the weekend games. I'm guessing that was set up so Keith Jackson could do college football on the weekend.
I was there last WS game I saw Pirates lost but then won 3 in a row and won it in 1979. Tim Stoddard shut them down and got very crucial two run single, a relief pitcher from the American League with the DH, Pitchers don't even bat.
The Glory days of the Orioles!!! Too bad, they are gone!!! Too bad they didn't win the series!!! The Pirates did it, twice to the Os, in 1971 and 79!!!!
Pirates and Orioles had their glory days at about the same time. The Pirates won it all in 1960, 1971 and 1979 while the Orioles won it all in 1966, 1970 and 1983. With the Orioles young hitters and the Pirates starting pitchers, maybe they can meet up in the series again in the 20’s…
I think it's still a World Series record for "Most hits by a losing team, one World Series game." Ironically, the 1960 NYY got 91 hits (A record) and lost to Pittsburgh in seven games.
