Today we're in the Hetch Hetchy Valley of Yosemite National Park, partnering with Visit Yosemite | Madera County ( @VisitYosemiteMaderaCounty ) as we take a Spring hike along the trail to Wapama Falls. Due to the record snow season and flooding in Yosemite in 2023, the waterfalls in the Hetch Hetchy area were raging during the recording of this video.
Located near the town of Groveland, this waterfall hike takes you alongside the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which was formed a century ago when the Hetch Hetchy Valley was flooded by the creation of the O'Shaughnessy Dam, providing water to the city of San Francisco.
For more information on Hetch Hetchy and the hike to Wapama Falls, check out my full Flying Dawn Marie blog post at:

Consider stopping off to support the small businesses and local economies of the gateway communities surrounding the park. For great information on what to do inside Yosemite National Park and in Madera County directly to the south (along Highway 41), check out www.yosemitethisyear.com and / yosemitemadera

I am a big fan of your posts. I enjoy the excellent photography and Dawn's narrations are completely charming. I hope the sound and volume can be fixed on future posts.

Thank you so much for the kind words…currently with my full time job these videos are just clips from my iPhone - more of a “raw” virtual visit for those who prefer viewing video to reading my websites full blog posts. In the future I hope to grow my skills & have more time to professionally capture & edit my videos (but for now I’m just thrilled that my friends & family enjoy these little “virtual visit” videos with me😊)

What an awesome hidden gem of Yosemite! I'll have to check it out sometime! Love the lack of crowds here.

That’s definitely one of my favorite things about this area…no Yosemite Valley crowds here!🙌

Thanks so much! It’s just over 2.5 miles one way (5 miles round trip) to the Wapama Falls footbridges & I have more complete details on the hike & each of the waterfalls in my full blog post.

Hi Dawn!!! Are you able to travel to other areas of Yosemite from the hetch hetchy entrance or do you have exit the same gate and access through another entrance? Will be the next week!! Cheers Todd

Great question - As of the weekend there was no access to Yosemite via Hwy 120 from the west except to Hodgdon Meadow and Hetch Hetchy. I would check the NPS website for the most up to date information but I don’t think the road is scheduled to open for some time (late June or early July). The good news is Hetch Hetchy was quiet with minimal visitors on my recent trip but the bad news is you can’t access other areas of the park without a big detour - I had to head all the way back down to Mariposa and reach the valley from El Portal (Arch Rock Entrance) last week. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Dawn sorry for all the questions but I’m leaning on your knowledge. It seems the only roads accessible are going to be the south and northside roads in the valley. Should we just expect to see everything in the valley and nothing else? I really wanted to hike to Taft point. Cheers Todd

While the snow recieved has led to beautiful waterfalls this spring many of the roads are closed due to snow or damage. Unfortunately I think in the coming weeks (usually starting with Memorial Day park traffic picks up) the Valley will become very busy as this is the first time in 3 years park reservations are not required and you can’t drive Tioga or Glacier Point Roads yet so things could get very congested. I wouldn’t be surprised if Glacier Point Road (and the Taft Point trailhead) don’t open until July or later this year. If your hoping to avoid the crowds a bit (and have time to drive out of the valley) two spots I might visit would be either Hetch Hetchy & Wapama Falls or the Mariposa Grove of Giants - while Mariposa Grove Road is closed I believe parking is still available at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza…this does add an additional four miles of hiking but if your up for it you can see the incredible Yosemite giant sequoias without the typical shuttle bus crowds - and the NPS website will have the most up to date conditions and closures as things could certainly be changing daily right now.

Good video. A wireless lav mic would do well for you.

I’m not really familiar with mics but I’ll certainly look into lav mics…as of right now it’s just me and my iPhone recording my adventures in real time to share with my friends & family but thanks for the information, I’ll look into it.😊
