In this video I go over how to wire up a 4-wire standalone harness to a GM Bulkhead. It should cover all GM bulkheads for 73-87 trucks, K5 Blazers and Suburbans.
Keep in mind I'm uncertain about the wire I currently have on the alternator running into the bulkhead but the others are correct. I wired this after searching many GM diagrams and if anyone has wired theirs different, please point out the differences in the comments. Please subscribe for more progress and how-to videos in my LS swap frame off restoration on my 1980 K5

When I'm done cutting my teeth on the LS swap in my 2000 zr2 s10, I'm LS swapping my 87 k5 next. For the zr2, I bought a low mileage L33 aluminum block (baby ls1) 5.3L that weighs the same as the factory iron block, iron heads 4.3L vortec engine. That way I don't have to screw with torsion bars squatting the front end from a heavier engine. I'm also adding a 70mm turbo to run 10-12 psi of boost. The 70mm should spool rather quick at low rpm but still feed it to the factory red line. When I'm done with it I'll likely add a 5.3 or 6.0 to the K5. I may boost it also or it may just get a bottle like all of my other builds. Yes my zr2 is my first LS swap and turbo build. I'm not concerned with my ability to do it considering I built a fully forge bottom end stroker 383 with a full racing top end when I was 16 and installed it in my 89 formula firebird. The full race th350 with reverse manual valve body died after 3 months. So I converted the car from auto to a t56 6 speed manual that came out of an lt1 camaro SS. All of this was done to my daily drive 89 formula firebird that was originally a tpi305 with a 700r4. I couldnt get the 305 faster than a 14.2 and I wasn't going to waste money on a 305. This was all back on 2000-2001 when the only prefabbed part I could get was a cross member for the t56 swap from spohn. I made my own center console out of steel that went all the way up under the radio like a factory one and I used part of it for factory window and mirror switches plus aftermarket switches for nitrous, ignition, fans, and fuel pump. It worked alot better than a 4th gen ls1 or lt1 6speed console. I've also done alot of bolt on to my now daily driver mid10 second 125mph 2002 WS6 Trans Am 6speed that now has 57k miles on it. I bought it box stock in mint condition in 2012. It ran 12.8s at Darlington dragway on street tires, 3 weeks after I got it. It's still a completely stock engine with just bolt ons and free mods. The zr2 isn't easy but it will make the k5 swap easier after dealing with the really confined space of the s10 engine bay. I never buy a vehicle and leave it stock because no company makes a vehicle that is good enough in factory form. Always built.

I'm actually hoping to fire up the motor before the new year. I've been working steadily getting little things wrapped up so that I can crank the engine and run in the camshaft. The single wire hanging is one that tied into to block on the firewall and the alternator. I believe I will be able to run it back to positive and be ok. I do plan to go back over the bulkhead wiring and make another video once the engine is started and the gauges are working just to ensure everything is correct. I found a gauge cluster with electric speedo and I believe that I will need to re-pin my plug for the gauge cluster. Keep watching because I'll have a video of all of that stuff when I get to that point in the build.

The factory used fusable links to protect the truck wiring on a terminal block on firewall . The hvac controls also are run from there . What did you do to protect your truck from burning to the ground in a fault situation ?
@1980LSK5
@1980LSK5 2 года назад
I rewired some of the power sources and went through a 6 fuse and 6 relay junction that sends power to multiple units. I now have failsafe power supply breaks at each unit that was not fused by the factory bulkhead. The AC is vintage air and it is on its own circuit breaker now also, as are fuel pump and fuel injection, power windows, primary engine power circuit, fans 1&2 circuits, and primary power to the bulkhead. It’s now a more complicated wire up but hopefully no stone unturned on power sources that could create a fire situation.

I am curious more about the main battery line and how it connects. The guy who did my harness removed the large red box, so now I am trying to figure out a little about how I should go about connecting it... Does the main feed just need to go to the big lug on the starter?
@1980LSK5
@1980LSK5 6 лет назад
The main battery wire(red) off of the bulkhead will connect to the battery terminal positive. The large 4ga wire from the battery will still go straight from the battery positive terminal to the big lug on the starter. Just tie in the small red bulkhead wire with it up at the battery terminal. Large red box? You referring to the red box that bolts to the side of the accessory bracket on the LS motor? If so, that is ok that its gone. You'll just hook up everything that needs full time power straight to the battery terminal. I looked over the diagrams again and the wire that I have coming off of the alternator would have originally went to the junction block up on the firewall. From there, a wire would go from the junction block to the bulkhead. All I did was bypass the junction block. I'm still unsure which wire I will wind up hooking up for the voltage gauge. ' I apologize that it took a couple days to get back to you. I'm unable to reply to comments using my cell phone.

@donrutter6765

Since you are already running a wire from your ecm to the crank position sensor ( area of starter), just include your large red power wire for ecm into that loom, and connect it to the battery hookup on starter, then you don't need extra wire running all over your engine compartment. Its much shorter and less ohms draw too.
@conorfitzgerald5909

Did you ever figure out which wire goes to the alternator gauge? Did you end up getting rid of the extra alternator plug wires? Thanks for the videos!
@1980LSK5
@1980LSK5 5 лет назад
Conor Fitzgerald I’d have to look. You can run the primary red wire off the alternator back over to the battery and the battery to the alternator gauge. A problem I ran into is when the engine is started, the alternator would feed power to the PCM through the bulkhead power and so when the key was turned off, as long as the alternator spun, it held power until the battery was unplugged. I will do an updated video because I’ve added a different box with 5relay slots and 6 fuse posts. Thanks for watching!

I went with the LS alternator too and have been having an issue with the truck not turning off when I turn the key off like something is holding power. Still chasing gremlins because I changed my fuse panel inside and it's been a hassle. I ended up running the alternator wire straight over to battery positive and deleting one of the ones off the bulkhead. I'll have to see which one. I'll be doing an update video once it's 100% worked out.

This is a great video. Thank you for uploading it. But I have a question. I went to start my dad's 1967 Olds Cutlass with 4.8LS (Engine from 2003 Chevy Silverado) Conversion and smelled fuel, I luckily had the exhaust and headers separated. I saw fuel spraying out of the passenger side of the header. I Swapped injectors for Cylinder #4 & #6 after smelling fuel on the plugs. I restarted the engine and the fuel still leaked unburned raw fuel. Any Ideas on how I should fix?
@1980LSK5
@1980LSK5 5 лет назад
I'm not real sure it will help but it's sounds like you are having constant feed to the injectors. Maybe a wiring issue causing them to stay on when the key is on. I'd definitely join the LS swapped squarebodies page on FB and ask if anyone there has had a similar issue. It may also be an option to take a couple old injectors and just plug them up, facing a fender well, on that side and turn the key on. If they are shooting fuel constantly then you know you have a positive feed constantly and you'll need to check wiring. Should be able to do that without having to remove the fuel rail and injectors that are on the engine now. Just use the plug ins. BE CAREFUL NOT TO SPARK THE FUEL. You may lay those injectors into a couple Coke bottles to retain the fuel spraying instead of dousing your engine bay. Hope this helps

The PCM will have a main power wire and ground and the injectors and coils will have a wire to power them when the key is on and you'll have a wire that runs to the fuel pump for power when the key is on. That is essentially the rundown of it aside from the main starter wire. For a more detailed schematic, check out UCanDoIt2 on RU-vid. Mark Torres possibly. I imagine they are extremely similar in how they are wired. The primary wires to focus on are the dark green for engine temp, tan for oil pressure, 2 reds for battery + and alternator, pink for ignition hot to your PCM/injectors/coils and the large purple for the starter. Those will get you really close to where you need to be.

Why he kept saying STANDALONE? That wiring to the PCM is 👎🏾 NOT a standalone, That’s a Nasty rework harness ! ...that’s why people keep getting problems when doing an LS SWAP ... Wiring is the KEY and that’s 👎🏾 NOT good at all !

lopez tony to the standalone meaning to the harness that supplies all engine and pcm power. I reworked the engine/pcm harness, it looks awesome, it works great, everything works perfectly so how is it nasty and not good at all? Wiring is KEY and if you do it right, like I did, there are no issues.
