Short video showing how to repair this deck by replacing the main rubber drive belt. Deck was just continuously switching between forward and reverse playback when a tape was inserted.
Speed of the motor is then adjusted.
Also shown is a pin diagram for the QRB (quick release bracket) cage plug at the rear of the deck, use this to create your own cable if you do not have the cage and matching plug.
This retro tape deck, released in 1988, was a high end model back in the day. Alpine audio systems were fitted to many high end car marques. It is a good looking unit with its bright VFD (vacuum florescent display) It also has full logic controls, music skip, blank skip, auto reverse and Dolby noise reduction.

Wow this is a similar unit that was in my Mum's New Zealand assembled 1993 Toyota Corolla Hatchback! Hers had radio as well. I thought we were rich because it had an Alpine head unit

A classic. Had the same one in a Golf Mk1 and later a Opel Kadett GSI. Fond memories

Loved the video! There are a few nuances there. At 16 minutes on the lid of the inner part you can see two microswitches. One of them, which is responsible for automatically recognizing the type of tape Metal is just at the end and prevents the lid from closing. It is bent with a metal tab, these mechanisms are assembled in boot mode. And these gears should never be touched with a screwdriver, as the soft plastic and teeth will suffer. Alpine has a special tool, a pinion, for a small rotation to put everything back in its place. Of course, users don't have it, so you should think of something soft to turn the mechanism.

Good to know. First time I'd opened one - no harm was done 🙂

@@ANTandTEC This is what makes them convenient - they adjust themselves when switching on from any position. Unlike them, the Clarions have several marks, including on the program gear.

@@ANTandTEC If the belt is a little stretched, I try to keep the original one. I soak it in a can of acetone for a day or two in the sun. The oils come out. The liquid is often colored. After the belt I boil it for 5-10 minutes. And I soak it a little with Liqui-Moly restorer. Rubber becomes completely different to the touch, diameter decreases, works perfectly afterwards. Lovely unit. Makes me want to buy a period correct car to go around it. I wonder if the line-in is for a separate radio or CD player. Great video.

Yes maybe. Perhaps if the 'pre-in' is switched to on, the unit will be powered up (even without a tape inserted) and the built in power amp can be used for the pre-in.

Pretty sure I now have this actual headset in my volvo 240... Exact mark on the display screen. Found the original connector but haven't wired it all up yet

@@ANTandTEC yes, won't be looking for a cage... Put something together in cad and have 3d printed it. Nice to know I've see the drive belt and motor sorted properly 😍

@@al123j Ah if you have the connector you could probably use any cage and fit the connector in the back, but 3D printing it is even better. Nice.

What a great design. So much better than this cheap touchscreen crap. Yeah, touchscreen was cool once, it was the future, but today it´s just cheap shit. Gimme buttons!!
