• 1971 Small Engine Rest...
This engine was given to me by my grandfather. He talks about how in the Korean war he would have to clean the head cylinder on the generator that ran the radio systems. while making this video all I could think about is what it would be like out in the mud working on a small engine that was crucial for the Infantry to communicate.
thanks for watching

I still have my Sears edger trimmer. No longer use it and not tried starting it for years. Could be the exact same model as this one. It sure did a super job trimming curbs and sidewalks. Clean, restore, rebuild doesn’t matter as a non mechanic there’s no way I could have done this. This video brought back fond memories of my manicured lawn. Thanks for sharing.

Few things build character in a young man like a pull start rope can. Ignore the negative comments. Great clean up and you got it running. Who knows, one day you may be standing over a 1000hp dragster! Well done young man!

Over the years I have rescued a bunch of small engine from the scrap yard while talking in loads of iron and I can say it's a great way to get a small engine for less than $10. If you fond one that spins by hand and has compression with no obvious knocking sound or obvious damage the odds are you got a good engine. Fact is most end up there due to the carburetors being gummed up/diaphragms stiff or the old points and condenser ignition system needing attention or just because whatever they were attached to having worn out. The only downside is if they came in with a load of scrap iron that got unloaded with the big magnet cranes they might have wiped out the magnets on the flywheel so you may need to keep that in mind if you get one that everything checks out but still wont start.

@TheJR1948 did you read the description? It says this was passed down to him from his grandfather, he also proceeded to say that his grandfather had to clean cylinder heads for generators that were crucial to communication. He didn't mention that that was this specific engine. He even has the owners manual that says it was off an edge trimmer not generator.

@TheJR1948 WARNING... I wont be as nice as the other people who have made comments about your comment. I have 2 questions In the title it says "1980 Small Engine Restoration" Question 1: What dimension do you live in where the main fighting in the Korean war was happening in the 1980's? (no, watching M.A.S.H re-runs from the 1980's does not count). In the 1980's, as we still are today, we simply guarded the south side of a line on a map and the north guarded the north side of the same line on the same map. I'm quoting from the description section "This engine was given to me by my grandfather. He talks about how in the Korean war he would have to clean the head cylinder on the generator that ran the radio systems. while making this video all I could think about is what it would be like out in the mud working on a small engine that was crucial for the Infantry to communicate." Question 2: Where in that short statement does it say that this engine is the engine his grandfather worked on in Korea? I'll be cool and give you the answer to my question. Here it comes ...now watch, be ready... It doesn't, therefore your statement makes you look like just another armchair lawyer who has never been to law school.

Good job....Once you get it to run, never make any carb adjustments until the engine's at operating temperature. They run much better when they're fully warmed up, and will be more sensitive to fine tuning.

Gute Arbeit, hat mir gefallen. Wenn du mal wieder so einen Motor in Arbeit hast, Zylinder abdecken oder einen dicken Lappen rein stopfen. Ich weiß von was ich rede. Good job, I liked it. When you have another engine in the works, cover cylinders or stuff a thick rag. I know what I'm talking about.

I actually rebuilt one of those Tecumseh 3HP horizontal engines myself as well. New piston, rings, con rod, lap the valves, new gaskets and carb and even a used engine casing, since the original threw a rod through the case. Runs great now on the edger, but I bought a 6HP Ariens edger anyway.

Just an FYI the reason an impulse type carb was on there was so that it could run at a slight angle (eg, a tiller). The carb you put on is a float type which doesn't like being run at an angle. Just an FYI. Love the video. Those old Tecumsehs will never die.

Brother, I want you to know that your video is of a help that you cannot imagine, it turns out that I am in Venezuela and the dictatorship of mature tries to keep the country without light so that nobody sees the reality in social networks the food that I get is damaged by this lack of electricity I am a father and I have daughters and you can imagine what one cares about them and their food, I managed to recover in a house of an acquaintance an engine very similar to this of your video that is mounted on a generator of 3500 w and with your help I managed to put it on as new I just need to gather to get the coil because it gives a spark but very dim it barely feels in the hand but when I place the spark plug it does not pass the spark is very poor, really thanks because thank God already With this engine you can help me and my neighbors when the regime cuts our energy because they are not affected by mature communism. Thank you from Anaco Venezuela.

Those little tecumsehs are exactly like the ones i use on my motorbikes. You can get a lot of power out of them by using carbueretors with larger throats,since the intake port and valve are MUCH bigger than that tiny restrictive manifold.I use 2 fender washers and a short pipe runner to adapt whatever i have that is bigger,and drill to fit. wademademotorizedmayhem (on you tube}

Judging from the amount of oil that was in the cylinder, I'd say that the oil control rings are shot,so I would've replaced the rings while it was pulled down. I painted up the 3 horsepower engine on my Briggs & Stratton mower engine because it wasn't blowing a whole lot of smoke & the compression was up to 100 PSI,but now it's starting to burn more oil ,particularly after I replaced the ignition coil as the motor didn't rev out the best then the coil blew,the replacement coil made it rev out higher. So, I'm going to replace the rings in that one. My dads Honda mower is the same,I had it running yesterday & it was all good but then I started it this morning & it filled the shed up with smoke again. Yes, it's done it before, it's a 16 year old mower which needs a rebuild,even though it's compression is above Hondas recommended 71 PSI (it tested at 75),I'd say the oil control rings are buggered ,I have the rings for them ,I just need to order the matching piston & oil seals !
@tobiasblum1912
@tobiasblum1912 5 лет назад
I think it was there because the engine was stored for a while and someone put oil in the cylinder to prevent the piston and the cylinder to seize. I had an old engine in my shed and my father said me that he put oil in the cylinder for that reason. For long storage periods.

First rule of small engine troubleshooting. It's the carburetor. 2nd rule. Yep, its the carburetor. 10x more likely than spark. Spark 10k more likely than compression loss or jumped time.

Gordon D.,My late father told me to remember that a air cooled engine only needs spark,fuel,oil to run properly , while a liquid cooled motor needs Spark,fuel,water,oil to run properly,And Diesel engine needs water oil,fuel.So if there is ONE THING missing or not working properly your motor will not run. That's my nickel.We don't have pennies.

Don't take this wrong, but rebuilding the carb or replacing it should have been in the first initial rebuilding process. Most likely, that's why it wasn't being used. The float membrane cracks and needs to be replaced quite often.

The basis of all ic engines are two ingredients fuel/air mixture and spark. I verify the spark and the fuel flow prior to starting any other type of work on an I/C engine. If these two are operating correctly I move on to whatever mechanical repairs may be needed I.E.: cracked or burned through piston, valve or valve spring replacement or both. Beyond these items the engine should crank right over and start/run.

Not going to knock you on your work however, I will give some advice. As you learn more and grow your parts and tools collection, look into purchasing or building a small sand blast cabinet as well as proper solvents and a small pressure washer. A good off-the-shelf primer will help with your paint adhering to the metal high temperature primer as well as paint would be best. Amazon sells stock packs of Briggs & Stratton carburetor parts and full gasket kits for these small engines and there are numerous parts that will interchange, as I said just simply some insight not criticism,good job.
