Hundreds more classic Steelers games on our site: www.mcmillenand....
The rocket arms of Terry Bradshaw and Bert Jones fill the air with footballs in a thriller. In spite of Pittsburgh's 3-to-1 dominance in time of possession while piling up nearly 300 yards of offense by halftime, the underdog Colts take a 7-6 lead when an ill-advised Bradshaw pass turns into a pick-6. Ever resilient, Bradshaw engineers a masterful 11-play, 87-yard drive just before the half (keyed by long passes to Harris & Stallworth) to regain the lead 13-7 on a TD pass to Franco.
The Colts come out fired up in the 2nd half led by Roger Carr (6 catches, 108 yards) and aided by three personal foul calls on Pittsburgh (including one on Mean Joe for kicking up the infield dirt) to take a 17-13 lead into the 4th quarter. Bradshaw beats a blitz with an absolutely perfect touch pass to Jim Smith -- who comes up big in the 2nd half (5 catches, 93 yds, 1 TD) after Stallworth goes down with a leg injury -- to put Pittsburgh back on top 20-17. But with less than a minute to go, Baltimore drives all the way to the Steeler 3 before Donnie Shell jumps the route and comes up with a beautiful interception at the goal line to preserve a Steeler victory.

Hearing Charlie Jones gives me that split second nostalgic memory. The one where you really feel like you're in that place. For me it was the late game on Sunday afternoon laying on the living room floor on my stomach watching the Chargers, Broncos or the Raiders in the early 80s feeling great but dreading bedtime and school the next morning. Those memories need a name because they are hard to describe. It only lasts for a second. I always try to keep thinking about it to try to make it last longer but it's gone. Have to wait a few months then it will happen again. Only a split second but boy it is sweet.

The 2009 Steelers should had been in the Super Bowl either winning or losing to the Saints. They had everyone back from the 2008 season. Plus, their schedule wasn't that difficult like it was in '08.

46:34 This must have been just before WIIC changed their call letters to WPXI. I think the change was only weeks or months away. I never understood the reason for the change. NBC was at an historic low point in ratings in 79-80. Maybe the local station figured a new logo, ad campaign and call letters would help. Had they waited only two or three years, they would have turned around anyway.

Steelers came out with a win, but it exposes some of their problems in 80. Bert Jones had all day to find receivers. No pass rush (Steelers would only have 18 sacks in 1980), a secondary vulnerable to the quick, short pass. I think by this year most teams had adjusted well to the new passing rules.Notice that Swann only had 1 catch, largely because opposing defenses were learning to use the 3-4 and use the zone. Surprised Bradshaw didn't go to the tight ends more. Plus, he missed two potential deep passes late in the game.
@mcmillenandwife
@mcmillenandwife 7 лет назад
You are so right, lack of pass rush was a HUGE problem for the Steelers in '80. It was non-existent and -- along with injuries and age -- was one of the main reasons for our decline. I would argue that our secondary was still outstanding and filled with playmakers, but with no pass rush, even the best of secondaries will get exposed. Swann played hurt all year. Stallworth completely missed almost the entire season. Bradshaw was already badly beaten up by game 5 and he was a complete mess during the second half of the season. He never got close to being 100%. Swann, Franco, Lambert, Thornton, Greene, seemingly everybody missed time. But ultimately, I think your point about the lack of pass rush might've been the biggest problem. The Steelers ALWAYS turned the ball over a lot. But the defense allowed them to be a high risk, high reward offense and get away with it. In '79, the Steelers turned the ball over more than any other team in the NFL, yet they still won the Super Bowl. In 1980, they were still a turnover factory but the defense was no longer strong enough to cover those warts. There's a fine line between winning and losing and 1980 was the crossover point for that Steelers group. I was 12 years old at the time to this day, 1980 remains the most disappointing football season I've ever experienced.
@bafa7353
@bafa7353 7 лет назад
My most disappointing seasons were 1985 and 1998. Both teams were coming off AFC championship appearances and were in contention much of the year but faded down the stretch. IIRC the records were 7-9 both years.
@trr3160
@trr3160 7 лет назад
Cutting Dwaine Board in 1979 and not drafting Rulon Jones in 1980 really hurt the pass rush and an aging defensive line. Banazak had a good season in 1979 but wasn't a factor again in his Steelers career. Dunn was a very good interior guy, Beasley was OK. The 1980 team needed a healthy Stallworth and a reliable kicker or else it would have gone back to the playoffs.
@TheTicktockman321
@TheTicktockman321 7 лет назад
I think Keith Gary was drafted in 80 but elected to play in Canada instead? That hurt. The 1980 schedule had to be one of the all-time toughest. The 80' Steelers had an excellent roster. Unfortunately, injuries kept allowing quality opponents to nip us on the scoreboard.
@trr3160
@trr3160 7 лет назад
Gary was drafted in the first round in 1981 and Anthony Washington, a DB, was drafted in the second round. Guys selected after the Steelers' picks in those respective rounds, Mike Singletary and Howie Long. Ouch.

i'm old school but the players look like football players now they wear very little padding have you seen what they wear for shoulder pads?, today's players must hurt more than the old time players, they wear no knee pads some don't wear thigh and the shoulder pads is like two pancakes on top. but what saves them is the field is rubber under the grass, i bet if they played on astroturf they would be padded up. todays game may be faster but it's not better!

What I find refreshing about football in those days is that it wasn't necessary to have video game-type graphics plastered all over the screen just so people who are staring at their smartphone screens half the time can still follow the game.

yes single tax. Also I know fantasy football is very popular but what I hate nowadays is when they do flash scores of other games they make you sit through the individual stats of everyone on the two teams before they'll show you the next score. When I'm watching football on sundays I could care less about who is 14-23, 195 yards.
