My friend had brand new one in1982 , It had Reacaro seat NASCAR edition it ran 14.80 quarter mile, the motor makes 345' torque at 2000 rpms, was fastest car I rode in the 80s💪👍

Awesome car...I have one and think they're the best looking vintage american muscle car ever made, IMHO.

Very nice car but the NASCAR decal on the front fender is actually for the 1981 NASCAR edition TTA, not the 1980 Indy Pace Car TTA. In that spot should be the Indianapolis Motor Speedway decal. Looks like someone mixed and matched the decal set. Very nice car regardless.

I absolutely loved watching this video filmed. Believe it or not but I just got my hands on a 1980 Indy 500 Pace Car Trans Am from this man who didnt really know what he had in his backyard until I ran the cowl tag under the hood on drivers side and the Vin number made my day when you said that it keeps up with a 6.6L I have this same car (minus decals) and my brother has a 1977 6.6L trans am

These cars can be EASILY modified to stomp a stock W72. Cooler thermostat, remove CatConverter, remove EGR, run Sunoco 93 and that 336lb/ft of torque starts to rise quickly. Actually, these cars are very respectable when running 93 octane fuel. One has to remember these cars were released in the later part of 79, and we had crap for gas in this country. The knock sensor on this car overrode any attempts at performance based upon timing as it retarded (literally) the timing at the mere hint of detonation. When running good gas the knock sensor is basically rendered inactive which greatly improved performance. These are only a few very easy fixes that make this car haul, other things such as different gear ratio, higher stall converter, larger turbo, better downpipe can all be fiddled with. At the end of the day these will never be 7000rpm turbo motors, but with a few tweaks these cars can be made very respectable.

Wow, just checked out their site on the internet. Right above their website was listed another site concerning them. It listed several complaints from people being ripped off. IF you buy from these people, sounds like you better go there and see the car for yourself, first. Apparently, cars being shipped sometimes are nothing like the video.

Back in 1994 I was just out of HS and running a 1972 LeMans with a 350. I stopped by the GM dealer to replace a sensor that I had no idea what it was. (Thermal vac tree) I broke.. Anyhow in the lobby was a 1980 white T/A Turbo with 7,XXX miles on it, I got in the driver seat and just felt at home. When I was a kid my parents had a 1975 T/A , Black with the 400 in it. We also had a 67 Bonneville Convertible with a 389 tripower in that fantastic "Frigidaire" white.

You should probably check paint thickness in the lower fenders and doors etc.

Some idiot put a NASCAR sticker on the drivers side fender the Indy wing should be there. Otherwise this car looks pretty nice. And yes this car looks like an 1980 Indy car. Daytona cars were white and black color theme.

Nice job filming this car. Amateurs take notes. We see "so many" videos of cars, showing every external angle known to man, but none of the eng., or sometimes even the interior. Good job.

The early 80's Tran-Am and Firebird were severely under-powered. I owned a 80 Firebird Esprit. The car was very sexy but had a 231 ci V6. I loved the car but it was heavy and performance was less then ideal climbing hills near Santa Cruz and when taking it to Lake Tahoe. This pace car looks excellent and I can understand if a collector is looking for a rare car that is 30 years old.

Hey man, do you think the turbo 4.9 is a big difference power wise than a 6.6?
@331Grabber
@331Grabber 7 лет назад
A lot less power than the 6.6 But you can up the boost and timing, free up the exhaust, and port and polish the 301 into something that's not a complete joke.
@TeeroyHammermill
@TeeroyHammermill 7 лет назад
LOL!!@ "A lot less power than the 6.6" Bullshit! Only 10 less hp but 25lbs more torque and can be had with a 5 speed manual.
@joequillun7790
@joequillun7790 6 лет назад
No 80-81 301Ts ever had a stick shift. 5 speeds in a T/A didn't happen till 83-84.
@andrewwright9154
@andrewwright9154 5 лет назад
Yes they made alot less power. People look at the factory hp ratings and think they are close but in fact the t/a 6.6 engines were very under rated. 400 advertised at 220hp but was actually making closer to 260 hp out of the box brand new.

"as fast as a 6.6 liter engine" ??? Noooooope "these respond to modifications really nicely" ... Only if the modification is putting a 6.6 liter in it :)

Did they out perform the 6.6 in stock form,absolutely. Did they respond to mods as well,not at all.

Boost Gauge? More like idiot lights!!!!!!! At 3 psi boost all 3 lights come on, that was a joke. Only a true boost gauge will give you an idea of what's going on.
@ramairgto72
@ramairgto72 9 лет назад
Peter Chronis Good grief, thanks for that 2015 thinking for 1979 when this car was made.. And as if your average person buying a car today would know how to read a boost gauge and know what it was doing. This was a bar graph that showed boost increase, rather cool for 1979. Lighten up a little.
@moutnlovr2
@moutnlovr2 9 лет назад
ramairgto72 That was basically for 1980 not 79. Having first hand experience, I had a 81 Turbo Trans Am back in 81 and those lights were useless, within 2 years I installed a real boost gauge that revealed the Turbo was only putting out 3 lbs of boost when it should have been 9-10 stock. After tweaking the Turbo boost was up to 12lbs. Back in 81 "High Performance Pontiac Magazine" tested a 81 Turbo and commented the lights were nothing but a "Three Lamp Dog and Pony Show" that was next to useless. GM was just to cheap to install a real boost gauge, the boost lights originated from Buicks Turbo V6.
@moutnlovr2
@moutnlovr2 9 лет назад
Peter Chronis Ramairgto72, To say 2015 thinking I think not, I was talking of my experience with these cars back in the early 80's and what were you doing back then?
@ramairgto72
@ramairgto72 9 лет назад
Peter Chronis 1980 cars come out in 1979, and if you look the turbo idea was in the works before it came out. A. The had no boost lights and added them late. B. The idea was put in long ago with the idea of 1980s typical Tec look.
@ramairgto72
@ramairgto72 9 лет назад
Peter Chronis I don't care where I was, or where YOU were, the car was made in the late 70's with the real V8 last cast in 78 they had to TRY to make power from something and it was that dog engine. I'm really sorry PMD didnt toss in a numbered boost dial for you! Maybe the guys over at Buick didnt like it as well? ....

Shirl M A Turbo Trans Am with the 301T still in it is worth something, a Turbo Car with a 400 in it is worth whatever you can get for it. From what i have seen most of those jobs are done by half assed shadetree mechanics. The joy is in taking one of these cars and correcting the penalties laid upon Pontiac by the EPA, DOT,Insurance companies.....and making these things fly. IMO.
@randsonic
@randsonic 9 лет назад
olds98123 It is true, however a lot of that was due to user error. These cars could not be driven on the highway for hours and simply shut down. Due to the improper oil delivery and the heat associated with a Turbo these cars were supposed to be allowed a "cool down" period which most people did not understand. I have read where the Turbo was a bit undersized, but I have never hear fragile. In today's world wherein Synthetic Oil is commonplace these can be very reliable units.
@ramairgto72
@ramairgto72 9 лет назад
olds98123 The turbo was "ok" but you have to factor in people with bad oil changing habits, and the constant need to watch the bar graph go up and down.. The heat soak was prob insane. I do know of many guys who still have the original turbo on after all these years, not bad for 1979.
