@@constpegasus More than that, but yes. For instance, the TD to Chester was a complete JOKE. The Chargers clearly were far, FAR better than the Raiders, who really blew chunks that year.
Plunkett's ability to make key plays with his legs made a big difference. Could turn a bad play into a good play by running, something Fouts had zero ability to do. John Jefferson having the worst game of his career vs the Raiders was a killer. Basically JJ's only bad game as a Charger, it came at the wrong time.
As a Cowboys fan I loved this game. Eagles were very good that year as well as the Chargers. SD had a 4 year window from 79-82. Loved watching them play
Wow! Memory lane. I was at that game and every other home game that year with my neighbor's 11 yr-old boy. His dad died in 'Nam when the boy was 3. I was always keen to treat him like a little brother. Those $11 cheap seats at "The Murph" were simple aluminum bleachers behind the eastern end zone before they closed the horse-shoe of that stadium but Dan Fouts and Air Coryell always delivered and exciting game. Qualcomm was torn down to make way for Snapdragon Stadium. Damn that makes me feel ancient. I've often wondered how that little guy is doing these days. He'd be like...54. Hopefully a grandpa by now. Life goes so fast!
Thanks. I've never seen the into from the booth for this game. Every copy I've seen before starts with the opening kickoff. I was starting to wonder if this was a back half of a CBS doubleheader and anyone who taped it over 40 years ago didn't capture the intro. I'm hoping that somewhere in your collection you might have the 1984 Colts at Eagles game, it was the first time the Colts came into Philly representing Indianapolis. As a kid who grew up outside Wilmington, Delaware my football allegiance was torn between Philly and Baltimore until the Colts broke my heart when they left. Thanks again for posting this game.
Feel bad for Kellen Sr seeing wtf Jr turned into...man, what madness. Sr was a nightmare for defenses. He certainly bought TE'ing into the modern day...what a weapon.
Up the coast in San Francisco. The San Francisco 49ers squared off against the New England Patriots. Final score San Francisco 49ers 21 New England Patriots 17 Steve Grogan was intercepted 6 times and was sacked 8 times.
One of the best games of the year between two of the NFL's best teams in 1980. Shame we made a few too many mistakes and couldn't pull out the W. If Franklin makes even one FG... Now that I've seen the whole thing, I'm also left wondering why Vermeil took the extra point and kicked it deep instead of playing for the tie/potentially the win at the end of the game. Considering how Air Coryell was eating our defense's lunch all day long, those were puzzling decisions
Saints got ripped. The Chargers was super charging. The Eagles was flying high. The Cowboys choked with Danny White. The Rams let L.A. down with 10-6 record. Pittsburgh Steeler fans cried. Cleveland Browns realize their coach sucks and his Red Right 88 nonsense. Oakland Raiders tap dance their butt to the Superbowl. Atlanta Falcons wants the piece of the action. 1980 was a crazy year.
