1980 World Series didn’t disappoint in a decade which were full of great MLB postseason battles. Also the two greatest 3rd baseman to ever play the game Schmidt and Brett squaring off.
This '80 series..i remember watching as a 9 yr old with my doberman puppy sitting right beside me. Gumbel did a game of the week early that season about Brett called Quest for .400. If it wasnt for hemorrhoids, he would have caught the splendid splinter that year. Finished .390.
Those were the days.. very special times. What a team the Phils had. Great seeing them get what they deserved there. I think that was my favorite Phillies team. Next favorite.. '93 Phils and then 2008. Used to love going to The Vet.. there was something special about that place even though it was considered a dump later in its life. Schmidtty, Carlton, Rose, Bowa , Trillo.. Shake n Bake, Booney, the Bull, Maddox, Tugger. That was a team right there. Dallas Green was a solid leader too.. and the best fans there are.
For Phillies fans: 3rd Inning Bowa single 58:20 Bowa steal 59:33 Boone double 1:01:00 Smith single 1:02:05 Rose walk 1:04:50 Schmidt walk 1:08:28 McBride HR 1:09:45 4th inning Boone double 1:27:50 5th inning Maddox sac fly 1:43:51 9th inning McGraw last out 2:39:44
I was there. My dad had season Tix on the 300 level, but for the post season they bumped us up into the upper deck... That's the Phillies organization loyalty to season ticket holders. 😡
What I admired about the 80 Phils is guys like Gary Maddox, Bob Boone and Larry Bowa. Yes their defenseive skills were phenomenal, yet offensively their numbers had dropped. However, they knew how to deliver the clutch hit.
Phillies were down 4-0 in Game 1 & won 7-6, down 4-2 going to the bottom of 8th in game 2 and won 6-4, and were down 3-2 going to the top of the 9th in game 5 and won 4-3. Three comeback victories!
That's why they called them the Cardiac Kids that year! Don't forget the Montreal Expos division clinching game...down 4-3 in the ninth with 2 outs and tied it, winning in extra innings! The Houston Astros series...down in game 1, come back to win. Down 2-0 in the 8th inning in game 4...6 outs away from season ending elimination....and come back to win in extra innings. Clinching game #5, down 5-2 in the 8th and come back again to win in extra innings 8-7 !
@@ccjjpp1966 the nlcs was more intense to me than the ws. It took everything out of both teams. What I loved more than anything was Manny trillo and his incredible throws, he stopped a lot of astros runs with his arm
The pre-game lineup before the game was respecting his talent and his season (batting .390). Once the game began, Brett was back to being a POS opponent to the fans!
+Chris Kreager yeah, Aikens was a big guy with potentially awesome power. too bad he messed up his career with drugs and had other legal issues later. would have loved to see what he could have done in a healthy career. fortunately, Willie Mays Aikens has turned his life around and is living positively now
I watched this live with my mother (a die-hard Phillies fanatic). I'll make two comments: Joe said 'Chicago Cubs', I heard Chicago BEARS. Also, a DH rule? What a hindrance for the Phillies.
I've never saw this series, because I never existed back then. I'm here to see this series for the first time after the 2022 Phillies failed to win the World Series & recently the 2023 Phillies failed to close out the NLCS. Screw the 2023 World Series.
Bake McBride's game-winning 3-run home run (1:10:08 ) to cap that rally in the bottom of the third was the most important of this World Series (one of the most underrated home runs in World Series history) and of the entire Phillies season, along with Mike Schmidt's division-winner in extra innings vs. Montreal and Greg Luzinki's game-winner in Game 1 to jumpstart the NLCS vs. Houston. What an unforgettable season for Philadelphia. And coming off perhaps the greatest League Championship Series ever, this World Series was also one of the best ever, especially among those which went 6 games.
surprised by George Brett's mental mistake in the bottom of the third, letting Boone score. not only was Pete Rose a thorn in the side to opponents on the field, but he played inside of the other players' heads too, not only his teammates, but his opponents.
1. Love Pete Rose bouncing the baseball on the turf! 2. Why aren't these players paid syndication royalties for their historical performances like actors who are paid for many years after their sitcoms are off the air? These guys are every ounce of Artists and should be able to profit like actors do.
Three comebacks by the Phillies, a KC game 3 walkoff win, and the tense 9th inning of game 6. Outside game 4, this was a terrific World Series- one of the most underrated in baseball history. If anything, I think it's up there in terms of best six-game WS of all-time.
+loyaldude10 if you listen to "his teammate" Bob Boone, the play was Rose's from the get, had Rose been in position, the ball would never had popped from Boone's glove. having said that, no one ever hustled more than Pete Rose.
@vitoduval No he wouldn't have. Nolan Ryan pitched game 5 against the Phillies. The World Series started 2 days later. Are you saying Ryan would have started after 1 day rest?
I wish we could see another player like Pete Rose, but I dont think it will ever happen again. You come closer to a Babe Ruth than youd ever come to a Pete Rose.
it's funny, in 1980, it was mentioned, will the Phillies be worn out from the fantastic series with the Astros and the Royals will be well rested since they did away with the yuckees easily. in 2008, it was the opposite. the talk was that the Phillies would be flat because of winning the NLCS in 5, while the Rays had to go 7 to beat the Red Sox. of course, in 2008, the Phillies won despite being unable to get hits with men on base for the first few games.
+wheelinthesky300 KC wasn't a power hitting team. with the exception of Willie Mays Aikens and George Brett, the power was very limited for the Royals.
Was never a fan of the alternating NL having home field in even years AL in odd years. It always seemed the majority of the years the team with the best record never had home field. Classic examples in the 80s were ‘80, ‘82, ‘85, ‘87, possibly ‘88
There was no inter-league play back then. Because of that, one team with a better record in one league didn't equate to being a better team and so giving home field to the team with the better record was wrong back then. It makes sense now with inter-league play.
Star Blazers .....i respect your opinion Star but I disagree. If u had the better record than you earned the right to have home field. Another classic case is ‘75.
@@frasierthebichon7422 Wrong! Not even sure what you mean by better record and earning the right to home field. Back then, they alternated every other year with who had home field in the World Series. Odd years - American League, Even years - National League. They did that to compensate for the lack of inter-league play and no way to determine who was actually better in the regular season since the leagues didn't play each other. MLB knew this and came up with this solution. Why can't you understand that? The National League won the All-Star games in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and the World Series in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982. The National League teams were just better during this period 1979-1982 over the American League teams.
Another reason they had to alternate home field is because many baseball teams shared their stadium with Football teams. The NFL had to know which baseball league would have home field in the post season so that they can set their season schedule to avoid conflicts.
He played 117 games. He missed almost 50 games! They allowed him to win MVP. And they didnt allow Carson Wentz to recieve his MVP for missing 3 games? LOL Brett was having a great season, but he didnt play a whole season. To me you gotta play 135-140.
As i recall Willie Wilson did nothing in the series...I think he was on drugs...Later on a few royals would b caught up in a drug sting and he was one of the players..
JR Richard had had his stroke in August 1980 and would never pitch in the ML again. As a Philly fan, we got lucky in the NLCS. JR’s stroke. Cesar Cedeno getting badly injured in game 3. The Dodgers forcing a playoff game and the Astros having to use Joe Neikro, limiting Neikro one appearance in the NLCS.
I think Pete Rose, of all players ive seen is my favorite player, and Ive seen so many. Like Schmidt, can hit for power, and was a great fielder, but Rose brought SOOO MUCH MORE. Not saying he was better BC theyre so different. Or George Brett this yr hit .390, but DONT BRING HALF what Rose does in all around intangibles. Intense, intelligent, leader, rooting every player on, every pitch, high baseball iq, like moves ahead of everyone, as you will see if you watch the 1980 him vs Joe Morgan, another high baseball iq, but Rose gets him many times, causing frustration Morgan couldnt deik Rose, or fool Rose. I cant even explain the guy, IN STARK CONTRAST, to almost 100% of baseball players since him. Guys that sacrificed themselves so much, yet hits for such high average. Takes pitches on purpose for walks rather than swinging at a 3-0 pitch like most will always do, he rarely ever will, taking pitches off his body on purpose. If you watch this series from game 1 to the end, just watch him. Youll see a different baseball player you never see anymore. Trying to put Pete Rose into words is not good enough. You have to watch it. And if you watch it from an opponent perspective maybe youll hate him. Or from a rooting standpoint you notice everything small even, that he does. Just a player from the dead ball era, like Ty Cobb, yet he is in the Live ball era.
Pete was definitely an electrifying player. I remember he was the only one to do head first slides all the time. He'd hustle to first on a walk. He would do anything to make things happen. Should be in the HOF!
Never watched every game. Just got done the Astros series. Wow, that all I can say! Best series I have ever seen, what an underrated series you NEVER hear about, but they all say it, greatest series in the history of baseball said Cosell, Drysdale and Keith Jackson talking about the Phillies Astros series. Something you have to see to believe from beginning to end. ONLY game 1 which is the odd game out, the rest were all extra inning games. The entire series.
hard to find 3 ex ballplayers that made a better announcing crew. kubek had a great voice, joe was always joe good and bad, seaver was smart and honest. still would prefer harry and whitey. but these 3 were very good.
