1980s Throwback! Reading & Northern Switchers Pull a Coal Train - Yard Job Shifting & Kicking Cars

We follow around Reading & Northern's YJNR (Yard Job North Reading) doing miscellaneous switching duties and heading to customers. But on one day in 2023, a trio of end cab switchers left the yard to grab a coal train and take it down the mainline, a throwback to a different era of railroading once common in this part of Pennsylvania.
EMD SW variants and MP15DC locomotives were a mainstay in the anthracite coal region during the days of the Reading Railroad in the 70s and up into Conrail the decade later. By the end of the 80s, Conrail wanted out of the business and Andy Muller took over the territory in the 90s, building up the Reading & Northern system to the over 400 miles in northeastern PA.
Today, it's somewhat a rarity on any railroad to see end cab switchers hauling big trains down a mainline as this type of motive power is generally assigned to local switching duties, so I hope you enjoy this catch and the other scenes included of YJNR over the years.

It's amazing how some regional railroads able to figure it out when it comes to PSR. Fixed schedule, fast freight, no super long trains, no layoffs as Class 1's did, and better reliability. It's neat to see a great regional railroad in my homestate plus their motive power.

before the MP15 those older switchers couldn't go too fast... the types of trucks they had didn't allow it... that's why EMD began using road trucks... they allow much faster speeds, road speeds

Very cool!! Yeah, seeing EMD switchers handle long coal trains is certainly a treat in the 21st-century. Also, I want to thank u 4 giving me advice about the Port Road. A couple of Sunday’s ago, I went back to COLA at around 5:15 ish, and after about 45 minutes of waiting and listening to the radio, I finally got NS 632, which took me by complete surprise had it not been for the loud K5llA on the leading SD70ACE.

Yeah. Maybe in the summer. I’ll try and get him. I also saw 595 last Wednesday at around 3pm. I sadly missed the lead engines but I saw most of the rest of the train. I was surprised to see him since I thought he usually comes early in the morning, but I did a little more research via the radio and as it turns out that’s just about the time you should expect to see him so I might go get him some other time.

Seems like they stopped running 520s and just have the local crews sort it out between Reading and Stowe and Stowe and Abrams or Morrisville. While that's kind of a nuisance I've noticed they'll sometimes pull them with GPs which is really cool as well, though I think they now use SD60Es further east.

PTC has resulted in very odd circumstances for interchange railroads that don't have PTC on their equipment. As such, NS limited R&N to "four trips per day" with a trip constituting as a move in a single direction, so going to Reading Yard and back would be two trips. NS tried to briefly make the drops and pickups at NRY but it didn't seem to be a satisfactory level of service or NS just got tired of burning crews and finally, for whatever reason, R&N is allowed back into Spring Street and over NS to Laurel Jct. Nearby East Penn Railroad is also allowed to Reading Yard and back. I believe (from what I heard) the only restriction for foreign trains is that they must not operate over 20 MPH when on NS but I cannot confirm that. I'll ask around.

See how many people are out there doing that work? That's why the Class Is won't do this stuff. Efficiency isn't actually efficiency in corpo-speak. Its less people, so they can spend less money. The actual speed and efficiacy of timetables for trains means nothing now with shareholders and capital management. As long as you can _say_ so, the bucks roll in with no effort at all.
@CentralPennRailProductions
@CentralPennRailProductions Год назад
Yep, the illusion and promise of short term quarterly gains versus actual long term vision and growth.
@SGuySMW
@SGuySMW Год назад
I believe that there are two solutions to the dilemma regarding the Class Is: 1. We break the network up into smaller, more centralized, and more precise companies that operate in specific regions (with some exceptions, including the Southern Transcon). This seems like the more logical choice. 2. We nationalize the entire US-Canada-Mexico rail network. In other words, we bring back Conrail and make it much bigger.
@CentralPennRailProductions
@CentralPennRailProductions Год назад
@@SGuySMW I agree with number one. You could essentially let the Class I's "win" so to speak, by letting them scale back to point-to-point long haul operations where they have their big trains between yards and get out of the switching business entirely. Branch lines and lesser used mains could be spun off to regional railroads who actually rely on building up business. These could be new private start ups or state run or funded railroads (think Vermont Rail System or South Branch Valley) that remain that way indefinitely or until a private short line is interested. In areas where switching customers is still required along the big railroads, you could spin those off to contractors between yards, or even Amtrak, so to speak, but for freight, where the system isn't totally nationalized but focus is put in to keep these businesses online until either a private buyer (non-class I) is interested, because the biggest problem with the large railroads is there is no accountability for what service they keep or not (except a quarterly balance sheet) often leaving customers who do want service in the dust or forced to trucking. I think the problem with Option 2 of a full nationalization or Conrail 2.0 is that could potentially lead to more removal of infrastructure deemed "redundant" that we may never get back that could be more devastating in the long run.
@SGuySMW
@SGuySMW Год назад
@@CentralPennRailProductions Exactly what I was thinking.
@retr0bits545
@retr0bits545 Год назад
@@CentralPennRailProductions I agree, though, who wouldn’t want to see the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern turn into a small class 1, also as for another short line. Rock Island Rail (the revived Rock Island Railroad) will hopefully kick Union Pacific out of their old stomping grounds and hopefully we will have a sea of reborn blue and white after being gone after such a long time.

Those 4-axle higher power locomotives really come into their own on lines like these. A lot less hard on the tracks and can still pull a nice amount at higher speeds. It is quite annoying how slow the speeds are on some lines that are really very stable.
