I completely agree with you...it was possible to perform a lot of skills more...today it seems to me that the low bar is totally ignored...I'm not a gymnast nor an expert, but almost all bar routines are truly boring, they are all the same!
I was a gymnast of the late 70's early 80's and I agree. All the routines were so original it was fun to see what kind of tricks the girls would do. Now the routines are almost just a men's high bar routine. I do like today's gymnast but like you I miss those days way back.
My God in heaven was this a year of the super girls??? Most amazing thing I've ever seen in my life!!!! These girls were the best to ever do it I don't care what anyone says. I've never seen talent like this in my life the skill that these girls possessed is unworldly
While the bars form in the 80s was very poor in comparison to today, with flexed feet/toes, bent knees, arched backs, poor amplitude, empty swings, and dead hangs, I still much prefer it to the bars of today. The innovation, beauty, intricacy, and artistry in these routines is unparalleled. Imagine these routines with today's standards for form and you have a perfect combo. Even back then, many could compete these creative elements with good form; if each and every difficult and innovative move was done flawlessly, I don't think anyone could argue with putting the bars closer together and how they used to be.
As a Gen-Xer, let me admit, we have been completely in charge and running the world since 2015. In that time we have managed to ruin math specifically and school in general, along with movies, television, society in general and now, apparently, gymnastics as well. We then have the gall to complain about it as if today's kids ruined everything and not us. We also have the gall to brag about how great our childhoods were, as if we were responsible for the 70s, 80s and 90s being so awesome and not the Silent and early Baby Boomer generations that gave us that great culture. Seeing the beauty of this video and comparing it to how toned down and sanitized it is today, (because we are in charge, not the kids) really hurts, and frankly, it's embarrassing.
For everyone saying this was better than today, be QUIET. This was great, today is great. Don’t like today? DON’T WATCH. The athletes of today deserve respect just as much as those of the past.
