The second-generation Chevrolet Camaro is an American pony car that was produced by Chevrolet from 1970 through the 1981 model years. It was introduced in the spring of 1970.[1] Build information for model 123-12487[2] was released to the assembly plants in February of that same year. It was longer, lower, and wider than the first generation Camaro. A convertible, which was available for the first generation, was unavailable for the second.[3] GM engineers have said the second generation is much more of "A Driver's Car" than its predecessor.
1980
1980 Chevrolet Camaro RS
For 1980 the aged 250 cu in (4.1 L) inline-six was replaced with a 229 cu in (3.8 L) V6 engine, 231 cu in (3.8 L) in California, a first for Camaro. The 120 hp (89 kW; 122 PS) (4.4 L) 267 cu in V8 engine became an option on the base, RS and Berlinetta models this year. The Z28 hood included a rear-pointing raised scoop (air induction) with a solenoid operated flap which opened at full throttle, allowing the engine to breathe cooler air. A federally mandated 85 mph (137 km/h) speedometer also debuted this year, down from 130. Z28s had new optional grey 5-spoke rims (later used on the 1986-1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS), a unique upper and lower front grill and smaller revised graphics on its doors. The side scoops were also changed from a louvered design to a flatter one with a single opening. The 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8 was now only available on the Z28 this year.
1981
1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
The 1981 model was nearly unchanged from 1980 and would be the last model year for the second-generation Camaro. The Z28 was still powered by a 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8, however due to new emissions regulations the engine was now equipped with a CCC (Computer Command Control) unit for the first time. This predecessor to modern engine control modules had an oxygen sensor, an electronically controlled carburetor, a throttle position sensor, coolant sensors, a barometric pressure sensor, a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP), and a check engine light on the dash. The transmission was now equipped with a lockup torque converter, controlled by the CCC as well. The CCC could also be used as a self-diagnostic tool. However, as the goal of this change was strictly emissions reduction, horsepower dropped to 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS). This engine was now only available with an automatic transmission, while the four-speed manual versions had the 165 hp (123 kW; 167 PS) 305 cu in (5.0 L), which was the only engine offered in Z28s sold in California. Canadian models, however, could still get the 350 and 4-speed combination, and were not equipped with a CCC. Canadian 1981 Camaros were thus identical to 1980 US model. RS models were dropped this year, but the RS designation would reappear in 1989. Total production had dropped down to 126,139 from a high of 282,571 in 1979.

You turned a lump of coal into a diamond. Those all plastic tires had me shreiking, I remember those being on some cheap-o models in the late 80's, and make your car skid right off the shelf. You made it look excellent though. 👍🏻

I had a 1985 Monogram 2117 Midnight Z 1978 Camaro Z/28 3 n 1 Skill Level 2 model kit back in the mid 1980s when I was younger. It was molded in black. The 3 n 1 was a stock version, street version, and dragster version. I built it in the dragster version with the stock Z/28 stripe decals. It was also reissued in 1991 with newer style box art.

This is most definitely a reissue from 1981by Revell. It was offered in the CHiPs TV show license as well as a stock Z-28. It is most definitely a Snap kit and said so on those boxes. As far as I can see the only new parts are the awesome decal sheet. Great job making it look nice Chris. I had this kit back in 1981. I will be getting one especially for those great decals.

I have been searching for the ‘81 Z28 recently, so I was quite happy to get notified of this video! My favorite color combo was the dark metallic blue with light blue interior. This is going on my Giftster list for the holidays. Only dislike: tires look over sized for the kit. That’s ok, I’m sure there are aftermarket options out there. Great build Chris as always and thank you for the review!

For better wheels and tires, I would recommend the Monogram Monte Carlo SS. It has a set of Goodyear Radial GT's and a chrome set of these same 5 spoke rims. The 1:1's have polished aluminum on the raised edges of the rim wim a cast aluminum look on the rest of the rim. Also, the tires in the earlier releases will have the "Goodyear GT Radial" lettering while the later releases will have smooth sidelines.

I got back into model building and even picked up where I left off on one stored in the box for YEARS. What amazes me is the staggering improvement using spray paint like these and leaving out the fiddly little Testors sprays I used before. I have never used primer until now and WOW! Liquid model cement is a game changer and so is a bodyline scribe and panel line accent paint. I got a chrome pen and now the effects are easier to achieve and the effort has been reduced.

Great job on this kit as usual! Theres nothing wrong with snap kits! They're actually easier to put together so you enjoy yourself more. Just because they're snap doesnt mean you cant put glue on them either. I just put together a super simple snap space shuttle kit. I put glue on key points just to insure strength. It looks great hanging from my ceiling! Only took about half hour to put together and satisfied the build bug! I like the "t"top tinting technique you used. Always enjoy your videos!😁👍

This reminds me of a Testors badged 1978 or 1980 Camaro snap together kit I built back in 1997. If I remember correctly I saw Lindberg logos somewhere on it. There was a 1980 Firebird "sister" kit to it I saw built on Model Car Videos a few months ago. Don't think this is the same kit but very similar, and with quite a bit of work it can come out pretty nice as shown here. Love the comprehensive decal sheet - the choices of stripes and it removes the drama of having to paint the taillights. Interesting color choice - yellow is always difficult for me. Just completed Revell's Fox body Mustang and the paint job came out so rough I decided to have it as a weathered car!

I agree that the tires on this kit don't quite look to scale, especially the raised lettering. In the 1:1 cars, the tires were, for the most part, a little lower in profile than these. Other than that it the kit really looks great. Would be a great candidate for a tire swap but that's it.

@@batmakko The 40% off was the same when kits were $30. So it's still a 33% price hike. Just wait, don't foster price hikes that really wind up in places like China. Slow or no sales will bring prices back down. This is a $15 snap kit, fcol. And even THAT got 40% off.

I have to say this kit looks like hot trash (for the price). The reason I say that is it is based off a snap kit and doesn't even have rubber tires. I am seeing it on pre-order for $54.99 CAD (about $40 USD). For that price I can get a nice Tamiya kit, for a few bucks more I can get a really nice Tamiya kit. I think re-releasing old kits is great, but one as low parts count as this for this price is outrageous. this should be no more than $19.99. Not a criticism of your build, I think you made it look great. The Yellow really suits it.

Chris I did a little tiny research, this is indeed a snap kit, but it started as a Chip police car snap kit. Reminds me SO much of Testors' 81 Firebird Turbo, which was a Lindberg which started as an Airfix kit. I cannot confirm that this kit was an Airfix as well, as the only releases I could find of it are all Revell and they're all 80s releases (till this year's release). But they seriously seems to build in quite similar ways. I agree with your comment on flash. But I still find it annoying none the less. Would've thought that Revell would've also put rubber tires for people that just don't enjoy the two part plastic tires. But that can be easily changed with tires from your parts box.
