Bought my 79 coupe from Potamkin. Very good experience. I had a typed list of what I wanted to order and went to every NY dealer. They were the lowest price by far. Arrived in 4 weeks, never a problem with the dealer.

Small world. I owned an identical color ("Champagne") 1980 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance. It had California plates on it with an Illinois title. Toured Europe with it -- Holland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, Yugoslavia, and so on. It was a sensation everywhere we went, folks just loved the soft closing trunk lid. Back to this here car. This must have been as stripped.down as they ever made a Cadillac. Ever. Mine had all the bells and whistles. This thing does not even have a frigging cassette player??? Who did GM though they were screwing? Oh yeah, but of course, I got it: their customers. Silly me. The interior here is wretched too. Mine had Champagne color pillowtop velour seating. This darkish-brown colored faux-leather (i.e. vinyl) seating is anything but pleasant. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter. Yuck!

That story about Potamkin brought me right back 40 years ago as I live in the New York City metro area and his main flagship dealership was in New York City. All that stuff is true! So are the stories about what the dealers would pull to keep people in the showrooms and pressure them to buy. It was still going on 20 years ago. In the early '90's the day after Thanksgiving, my father got up early and saw a stripped pickup truck for sale at an excellent price. One only. He got to the dealership before it opened. When it did, he showed them the paper and said 'I'll take it no questions asked.' They told him it was sold but they could give him another truck for like $3K more. My father questioned how it could be sold when he was the first one there and it was a brand new ad. They wouldn't tell him. 😂 But my father, being the original old fashioned horse trader, stayed there for a couple hours and managed to get an upgraded truck for like $300 more plus the trade in of his old 4 cylinder car with one bad cylinder! 🤣 Then, in the early 2000's I took a guy I knew to a dealership who was looking for a new car. Same deal. A special in the paper. I said 'is it sold already like MOST deals?' They said no so we said we wanted to look at it. They said it was at another lot and they needed to drive us there. They took us there. It off a dirt road, no lights and cars as far as the eye could see. The salesman pretended he couldn't find the car and tried to pressure my bud into a more expensive one. It was winter so it was cold and then freezing rain started. I told him we wanted to go back but he kept us there under the premise of finding the car but still trying to pressure him into a more expensive model. Finally I said to him 'either you take us back right now, or I'm getting on my cell phone, call the cops and tell them you're holding us against our will.' When we got back, I told the sales manager what happened and he better come up with the car advertised immediately. He said 'do you see that door behind you? Well, don't let it hit you on the ass on the way out!' Later, I read that dealership was sued by the government for its shady business practices.

Did they de-option this car so much that they didn't put the plasticized chrome on the bezel around the climate control/fuel data center/passenger mirror adjuster? The missing cruise control module under the headlight switch looks awkward enough, but I've never seen that section not have the chrome. It's also very odd that they decided to take so many goodies out of the Fleetwood Brougham, which was supposed to be the top-of-the-line and an upscale version of the DeVilles. This car really is an odd duck, yet despite being "cheapened-out", is in excellent shape with super low miles. So strange!

My 1980 had all of that and more, of course it was a fully-loaded Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance. A car as stripped-down as the one here -- I would never have even bought. This one is definitely not a luxury car. More like an embarrassment for GM's "luxury division." Some are blaming the dealer? I blame GM's Cadillac Divisiion for allowing this mayhem to have existed.

The checking on the hood is normal. I have a 1984 DeVille. You really don’t notice it And I believe it’s because the hood is a lighter metal I have the 4100 and no issues however it has been in the family since new and always maintained.

Beautiful car! If you follow the proper maintenance on these 4100 engines they could give years of reliable service! Note that Cadillac put a performance 3.42 rear axle ratio along with a higher stall speed torque converter to help make up for some of the deficit of torque compared to larger 5.0 engines like the Olds 307 or Ford's 302. In 0- 60 performance they weren't all that far off from the competing Town Cars and full size Chrysler products like the New Yorker back in the early part of the 1980's. What some may not realize is that most cars in the 1980's back didn't have items we take for granted as standard fare. Even though this is a top of the line Fleetwood Brougham it is missing a bunch of options that most of these cars came with. Cruise control, tilt wheel and the optional telescoping function, Twilight Sentinel, power mirrors, cassette player with Symphony sound, De'Elegance upgrade, wire wheel disks or real wire wheels, power moonroof, power seat recliners and even a leather rimmed steering wheel were all available. As stated not equipping this car with any of those items probably knocked off 3-4K from the sticker.

You are correct. All these guys saying all 4100's are garbage.... Ugh.

Interesting. My own 1980 d'Elegance had every single of those items you have just listed, all of them. The seating inside were identical in color to the exterior, "Champagne." The material was not fake-leather, either. They were extremely comfy velour pillow-tops. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer.
