The thing I love about these trucks is their simplicity. Today's vehicles have too many computerized components. Wifi this, touch screen that. Just give me a strong reliable motor and I'm a happy camper.
My 1988 Chevy. had over 400,000 on it when when my blow up the engine by not checking the oil. My 1991 Chevy has 350,000 and still go. Had a 2001, and a 2000 Chevy. Went back to the 91
Ike and really reliable. my 85 c20 is still kickin and has never let me down. I even overloaded the payload with a home improvement project I was doing and it still kept up with traffic on the highway and even uphill
I have a 1984 Silverado i'm restoring. After I had the engine rebuilt,I drove it to a transmission shop to have the Transmission rebuilt. This is the kind of shop that removes the transmission, and disassembles it in front of you. It took them 35 mins to remove, and disassemble the transmission, and the shop owner said today's cars would have been towed in,with the kind of damage my transmission had.$450 and 1 day later I drove my truck home, with a 2yr warranty. The shop owner said he cannot offer a 2yr warranty, with today's transmissions they are just to delicate.By the way my trans still had the original factory internal parts, and my engine still had the original factory metal head gaskets. Its amazing my engine and transmission survived 32yrs before they got there first rebuild.
Jesse Aguilar my dad has a 89 s10 2.8 5 speed 4x4 he had to replace the tranny cause no ever put gear oil in it it still had tranny fluid in it so it died and engine wise it’s only had the oil pump replaced and it has 350k give or take never been rebuilt except the oil pump had to replace the trans and it came out of a 140k miles truck from a junkyard when my dads truck had 150k on it when he swapped it still runs great rear ends gettin loud though
hmm, well at 1:42 it says the '83 chevy 1ton dually will tow "up to 13,000 pounds". A 2016 model 1 ton dually (from any of the 3 brands) will tow up to 30,000 pounds. That's a LOT of groceries!
I like the 4WD section. The drivers are bouncing around pretty good haha. the sad part is, a brand new 2016 couldn't do what those trucks did over 30 yrs ago. There would be plastic smashing everywhere, air bags going off and traction lights coming on.
I've verified that when these old trucks were built 16-18 gauge sheet metal was used, while nowadays 20-22 is the norm even for trucks. Ever wonder why you see people close their doors and the metal flutters? Fords are brutal for this, the 2007 and newer GM trucks have fluttering hoods at highway speeds. They call it dent resistant, I call it BS. Also the OEM's now consider glass as part of measuring the structural integrity for a vehicle, including trucks. Are newer vehicles safer all around? yes. Are older vehicles safer in fender benders? yes. Are newer trucks more powerful? obviously. More capable off road? Not a chance. After plowing snow and driving in the bush with a 2015 3/4 ton chevy. My 85 1 ton 4WD is twice the truck plowing snow and venturing offroad by a long shot. Not as comfortable though. But its a truck, not a car. I prefer the KISS principal brought to us by the US Navy.
This series of GM trucks were notorious rust buckets. I don't know what gauge metal they were made of but they were bad. The generation previous to these ('67-'72) were far better trucks.
its how the steel was treated, it was solid, but it wasnt treated, and ive owned my fair share of 67-72s, the outside didnt rot bad, but the floors and inside of the box and fenderwells rusted out just as bad
My grandpa bought a new one in 87. The last year of the square body and first year for throttle body fuel injection. Had a fuel injected 350 that made 200hp 😂. It was a total slug but it drove and rode good! It was brown and cream colored with long bed . Him and I had lots of fun in it. Wish I could go back
The first place I'll go in a time machine is a chevy dealer in the 80s. Gonna stick one of these in a barn and come back for it in the present. Replace all the deteriorated hoses and lines and boom, a brand new 30 year old truck. Perfectly preserved. At least that's what I'd do if he had time machines...
I don't know know why, but I always dream of this..just to go back in time and a buy a bunch of square bodys new from the dealer and preserve them for later.. one man can only wish :(
You would be alot better off going back to get a 1971 triple black hemi cuda convertible bring that back to know with close to no original miles on it and you could probably get a million dollars or more no sweat.
me too, just don't like an automatic in a truck, never did and never will but I guess we'll have to dream on, learned to drive on a 1975 c 10 3 speed on the column, 350 engine wish I had it back.
@@seththomas9105 Ram offered Manual transmissions up to 2018 model year 2500 and 3500 but no longer do as of 2019 model year trucks. Chevy and Ford stopped offering manual a long time ago.
Regardless of if you like Chevy Dodge, Ford or whoever else. This was back when men were men, trucks were trucks with leaf springs and you could smoke cigarettes anywhere you wanted
If you can smoke a cigarette you can throw that shit on the ground and get back to work these trucks are nice but would never work for me I need to move 3 pallets of shingles on a trailer and one on the bed guys still smoke at work but that's all they do smoking is bs work yourself to death is how it should be 12 hour work days
OSDCrusher No offense but the trucks back then especially Chevy would rust on the lot, had weak engines, wouldn’t haul half the crap of s new one. It is also nice not to smell the smoke of people’s who rudely smoked and had everything stinking.
This marketing video is amazing! It is almost brings a tear to my eyes. The kinds of ads are why I went with Chevy's from the start. They actually show the parts on the truck and and why they are on there. And even show under the hood and say how easy servicing is (not even possible in some trucks today!). No ads today comes close to this one. All manufacturers want to show today is the fancy electronic gizmos, nothing that somebody who actually needs a truck should really care about. Contrary to what the manufacturers think, not everybody needs an overpriced off-road beast truck. This video is what a truck is supposed to be! They can make more base trucks today, but they make more money off the higher-end versions.
I had an 08 Avalanche that I just sold and I just bought an 87 Silverado and I like driving the 87 more than the 08. They just don't build them like they used to.
It’s almost like the “egg shape” gets better gas mileage more than a box shape. Aerodynamics are something to think about while making a daily/grocery getter. But if your looking for a box the new trucks are still boxes and also the Dodge Challenger is a box also.
Pita to work with a single cab it fills jobsites because everyone has to bring their own. Also if you have delicate tools such as power drills nail guns saws and other tools I toss them in the back so they don't get soaked in rainstorms
Whether it's a ford, a Chevy, or a dodge, all three of them made very reliable old trucks back in the day, and what I like about them is how tough and reliable they are even in today's modern times. They say old cars break but my mom's SUV has been in the shop more than my old ford.
Traindriver844 its called planned obsolescence . the vehicles today much like computers, which technically todays vehicles are glorified computers, they're designed & manufactured to be broken & obsolete within a certain amount of time. best thing i can point to as proof of this, "smart" phones. u buy it get used to it BAMN s8, iphone8, lgv25 etc etc is being released next week
@@DIRTDIVER882 most of the time when I see a phone being replaced is due too either an accident or they just want the new one despite it still working look at base model F250 looks pretty simple and them look at a king ranch, you can choose to have simplicity or loaded with luxuries I like how most work trucks have vinyl seats and rubber floors now easy to clean up
@@justenough730 a spider injector is a pita took gm too damn long to go to mpfi also gm hardly gives you any damn room to work with pulled the transmission out my Silverado and the top bolt was a pita also the starter wires are between the manifold and the frame can barely get my arm between there also front ends on Chevy are so damn weak the coils look like they came off my Honda Civic
I have an 86 and I'm only 31 but I bet some of the younger guys that see this are going to be like "what's a 3 speed manual transmission? " I love these older trucks ,even the Fords and Dodges too.
These were some of the very best Chevy trucks built! Their only weakness was the body panels rusting to soon! But I’m right now looking at one about the same year, that’s Military Surplus. The truck is a 3/4 ton 4x4, with I believe is a 6.2-6.5? Diesel, non turbo. There’s absolutely no rust of any type, only 67,000 miles and runs very good, or as well as can be expected. The previous owner added new Dual Exhaust Custom made from 2.75” tubing, with two nice fairly quiet mufflers. The gearing is 4:10 by the count of revolutions of driveshaft to wheels, with locking differentials, the front added by last owner. He also stripped the OD Green paint color off, but not to bare metal, had Bed Liner added to the bed along with about 8” up from the bottom, along with underneath. If I can get it for the right price I plan on buying it. I have access to a lightly used Banks Sidewinder Turbo Kit to add on. The only issues will be price and Wife, she is not to keen on having a Reg Cab, as we need any truck we have to tow our Travel Trailer whenever we want. Price is also an issue due to the fact we must buy a second vehicle that has 4 doors and be fairly nice. In a perfect world for me, I would love to do a DuraMax swap, tuned down to match up with the 4R80 trans that’s in the truck now, or at least a nice LS/LT Crate Engine. Then get a nice Lance Slide In Truck Camper, with the rear cab window removed and sealed to the Camper, so the dogs could be more comfortable! Oh and add a good A/C system!
I owned these trucks since I was 16 they were great to me about 10 years ago I bought a Duramax owned it for a little while sold it and bought another one of these a nice little 86 nothing's better than these style trucks
why can't they just remake and resale this trucks and iron out the few problems they have? they ever remake these trucks and I have the cash to buy one I'll be first in line
4thstooge add a couple alloys into the metal and add some thicker paint and rust won't be a problem for a long time and even with a modern day vehicle (even thou they are mostly plastic) will rust to if you don't take care of them.
381 322 Just might have to do that, and or hopefully I'm the future someone will make a company where they specifically remake these older vehicles brand new for people who don't want the newer garbage. If I ever win the lotto that's what I'll do.
@@melrose9252 Lol have you ever owned one? Mines clean as the day GM made her because it got washed! And the stock 454 in my truck will burn 37 inch tires clean off.
I'm in the process of restoring an 82. Rust has been the problem, after market replacement panels have been a pain in the ass but it's fun those trucks had a feel that new ones don't have
Dime Fever that body style they made the regular cab pickups with single rear wheels from 1973 through 1987, but all the crew cab pickups, Suburbans, & K-5 Blazers, they made from 1973 through 1991. Also if I'm not mistaking I think they still continued making regular cab pickups with dual rear wheels & regular cab 1 ton chassis cabs with both single & dual rear wheels up through 1989.
Id buy one of these new today. It would be awesome if Chevy did a retro year model series. Where the truck is identical to the ones in the 80's but much cheaper now days.
Have the exact same truck and colors as the one in the intro. Bought it for $900 cash hoping it would last for a summer while doing major building renovations - hauling plywood/sheetrock, dump runs etc. That was some years ago and this thing keeps going and going. Random people give me compliments on the truck at Home Depot, lol. Going to keep it because I love it for the hard-working dinosaur it has become. It will haul 2,200 lbs in the bed before the steering gets a little dicey (certified ticket from landfill). Insurance is surprisingly expensive due to lack of safety features I imagine.
I really miss those trucks. Thats back when the American auto companies really made a good, long lasting truck. They were expensive back then, but no where near the insanity they want for new ones. I would buy one of these trucks in a heart beat over a 2020 truck. ☹
14:00 now that’s what they need to put these new trucks to the test, good ol rough terrain! Not just pebbles and small puddles like today’s truck commercials
Back when odometers were 5 digit instead of 6. Today's trucks are better in terms of tech but these trucks look better & id say have tougher bodies (although they had a bad rust issue). Love them old boxy body chevys!!!
I love the use of the first three seconds of the laserdisc for text "slides" of various sorts. I suppose the disc was programmed to allow stepping through them all? Sony did that and more with their CRV discs 15 years later., running both videos and still graphics from the same disc at their business meetings.
Yes! There's an audio track with programming instructions for the LD player. It built a little quiz where you'd use a phone keypad on the remote to answer questions.
For me it was a reliable diehard work horse, it never backed down from a load I over loaded on the trailer, it didn’t like a lot of them but it got er done abused it till 129000 miles blew a head gasket, then I built a 350 and installed it! Ran it for another 15 yrs! Gave the 6cyl to a friend he worked the head stuck it in a houseboat ‘, as far as I know it’s still tooling up & down Tn. River
I own a 1986 Silverado. Had it 24 years now. I replaced the tired 305 with a crate 350. Big difference. I'm asked on a daily bases if it's for sale. A/c can't keep up with this texas heat.
@@marcusc110 yes the base Cheyenne but I was talking about the Cheyenne Super which was a top of the line trim package that came out back in somewhere from 1969 to 1971 & was replaced by the new top of the line Silverado trim package in 1975.
I use an '85 k20 silverado as a wood truck. I have tried a few other trucks but always seem to end up back in the k20. I sort of regret working it so hard in part because it has a federal vin so stock it had very little smog. It started life as a US forest service truck.
I had a '77 Stepside (same as '83, just different grill). Now that was a basic truck! 250 six/3 on the column.....the only option it had was power steering. I liked it a lot, but eventually it got so rusty I had to junk it. The cab mounts were gone, and the rear fenders on the stepside box were flapping in the breeze
15:57 WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WHEN HE SAID FRONT SOLDID AXLE UP FRONT WHY DO I SAY BEAUTIFUL BECAUSE CHEVY DOSENT MAKE STRAIGHT SOLID FRONT AXLES ANY MORE 😭😭😭
I am a hard core chevy guy ,Chevy has and will be in my family. I am bow tie till I die. I love my 79 and my 78 chevy along bed trucks ,even my 2011 pickup
Late 2019 and I just hauled 2200lbs of roofing to the dump and picked up 40 sheets of OSB on the way back (1983 C10). Love my old truck with working original AM/FM radio cassette. and doors you have to absolutely slam to close properly.
Love both my 85 C30 Silverado Dually and 86 GMK K2500 High Sierra Square Bodies. Want to add a 3rd Square to the fleet but don't know if I should go for a Suburban or short bed half ton.
I owned a 1983 custom deluxe long bed with the blue interior. Truck had a 305 v8. It was not fast , terrible on fuel economy, body was rusting through but the engine was very reliable.
How the hell can you even drive through those tight streets I'd love to have a kei car in the US looks adorable :3 makes the Civic look like a town car
