Just came across one of these in a home a friend just bought. Haven't seen these in years. I had forgotten how solid feeling these washers were. This was built with U.S. steel at the time and was much more solid than anything in the big box stores today. The quality was apparent.
We had the same washer in Alaska and it lasted for forever until recently. The new washer cannot hold a candle to these gold stars from way back. Pieces of shiny shit!
My GE is a 92/93 model that sounds like this and is so noisy when it spins. It didn't sound like this when it was new. My transmission has seeped a little oil over the years. I think it has made the cable suspension system a little off balance. It has seeped a little since 2009.
I think this is a great washing machine from GE. I think the new front loading and HE top loading washers especially with the electronic controls a royal piece of shit.
I have an 81' matching set washer and dryer. My washer leaks really bad and I can't get it fixed because no one can find parts. Everyone I've called says get rid of it. I can't do that. It's like a member of the family. Can you please tell me where I can get mine fixed. It still runs like the day it was bought, just leaks. Please help!
I would try repairclinic.com. Where is it leaking? Tub seal? If it isn't that it's probably a much simpler fix. Take a look inside and see where the water is coming from if you haven't already.
+80's Appliances it's leaking at the bottom where the shaft enters the tub. I guess that's the tub seal or main bearing? Thank you for the web site. I'll check with them.
A good repair person can find parts for the older machines. Parts for those older machines are still made. Check your local Yellow Pages under "appliances". You're bound to find someone who can fix it and/or provide replacement parts for it.
