I purchased this Hobie 16 in November 2020 for $1200 including trailer. For you first-timers looking to rejuvenate an old cat, I'm sure you'll get a sense of just how much work it entails but well worth it. Shooting footage of yourself quickly begins to feel a bit over-indulgent and cumbersome, so this video isn't inclusive of every phase of the project. Lots of trial and error, a few things I'd do differently (don't judge), but the boat is structurally sound, complete with new rigging, and looks fantastic. Learning how to completely rig and de-rig a Hobie was a meticulous process and a little nerve-racking - the mast actually collapsed in the driveway - as was the first launch from a boat ramp. Despite a few clumsy tacks and gybes, our Hobie performed flawlessly, proudly flaunting her vintage Cat Fever sails on San Diego Bay.

Great job. Just got myself a hobie Fox project boat. Making preparations and location to start the project. Could be my first opportunity to actually use my GoPro and actually document it 😀

Very nice. I just recently started a hobie 14 turbo. Taking a while for parts to arrive. Had to replace sails. The jib and main clew plates are completely corroded and damaged the sails and they were significantly stretched out of shape. Replaced rigging and trampoline. Rudder blades were replaced though I'm gonna have to figure out if I can put bushings in the castings. They are worn badly. It's gonna be a great boat though.

That looks fantastic! Who doesn't love Hobie time? Top tip: don't drill those white rudder stock bolts out. Instead heat a flat head screw driver, then ram it in to screw it out. Take a few goes to get it to melt its way into the nylon bolts.

You inspired me to get a project cat… I got a 1983 Prindle 18 today. Hopefully I’ll see you on Mission Bay soon.

Beautiful Hobie Cat 16. Reminds me of the one our family had in the late 1960's in Miami. We bought it used and sailed it for many years, including racing it there in what was then: Fleet 16. Our sail number was 254.

What is that mast clamp you have supporting the mast on the back of the trampoline?
@NickAbadilla
@NickAbadilla 10 месяцев назад
A homemade support that came with the boat when I bought it. It was too big and cumbersome, and I eventually bought a simpler mast support from Murray’s. Basically it’s a plastic cradle with a bungee cord and fits securely on the back rail.

Great job on the boat. I like when these hobie's have benches, it looks way more comfortable.

Nice restoration!! Did you change the sail fabric too? Or you use something just to paint? Mine is in a quite bad state...

The sails you see in this video are the original Cat Fever sails. I eventually replaced them with newer sails from a local San Diego company.

What did you spray on the metal parts? Looks great, is it some kinda of rubber or flex seal thing?
@NickAbadilla
@NickAbadilla 2 года назад
Industrial strength Rustoleum semigloss paint/primer, 3 coats. Surfaces were fine-sanded and cleaned with acetone before applying paint. After a full year of aggressive sailing, still holding up quite well.

Great job on that restoration. I’m just starting a similar project. I’m also reconnecting with my salt-water craving after a few years of being without. Please comment on what you did to the mast and frame. Looks like you painted both. If you did can you tell me if painting the front and rear crossbars affects at all the function of the travelers? Please share what products you used. Thanks

Thanks! The travelers, cleat hardware and dolphin striker weren't painted but masked with blue painter tape. Crossbars and rails were prepped by wet sanding with 600 grit paper, then painted with a couple coats of Rustoleum industrial primer/paint. The paint has held up very well, and I've sailed a ton this year. The mast wasn't painted, just sanded in the same way and then I applied a couple coats of Penetrol, an oil based paint additive. I plan on reapplying it once a year. Great product. Good luck with your project!

Hi Nick phenomenal video really appreciated the work that went into making it. Could you talk a little bit about your jib setup as far as removing some of the old blocks and putting in a low friction set up. I'm trying to think through something similar and was wondering how you rigged it were you trying to come up with a substitute traveler system? Any help you can offer would be much appreciated!
@NickAbadilla
@NickAbadilla 2 года назад
Thanks for your kind comment. I replaced the original jib car with a low profile one available from Murray Sports and also installed a lance cleat (simple cleat, also available from Murrays) on either end of the front crossbar. A traveler line runs through that and is tied to the outside hole of the jib car. I then tied elastic cords on the inside hole of each jib car to the vertical rod on the dolphin striker. This way, I can adjust the position using the traveler line. When it's released, the jib car returns to the end of the track toward the mast. I hope this makes sense!
