The Toyota Supra (Japanese: トヨタ・スープラ, Hepburn: Toyota Sūpura) is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The name "supra" is derived from the Latin prefix, meaning "above", "to surpass" or "go beyond".[3]
The initial four generations of the Supra were produced from 1978 to 2002. The fifth generation has been produced since March 2019 and went on sale in May 2019.[4] The styling of the original Supra was derived from the Toyota Celica, but it was both longer and wider.[5] Starting in mid-1986, the A70 Supra became a separate model from the Celica. In turn, Toyota also stopped using the prefix Celica and named the car Supra.[6] Owing to the similarity and past of the Celica's name, it is frequently mistaken for the Supra, and vice versa. The first, second and third generations of the Supra were assembled at the Tahara plant in Tahara, Aichi, while the fourth generation was assembled at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City. The 5th generation of the Supra is assembled alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.
The Supra also traces much of its roots back to the 2000GT.
Along with this name, Toyota also included its own logo for the Supra. It was derived from the original Celica logo, being blue instead of orange. This logo was used until January 1986, when the A70 Supra was introduced. The new logo was similar in size, with orange writing on a red background, but without the dragon design. That logo, in turn, was on Supras until 1991 when Toyota switched to its current oval company logo. (The dragon logo was a Celica logo regardless of what colour it was. It appeared on the first two generations of the Supra because they were officially Toyota Celicas. The dragon logo was used for the Celica line until it was also discontinued.)[citation needed]
In 1998, Toyota ceased sales of the fourth generation of the Supra in the United States.[6] Production of the fourth generation of the Supra for worldwide markets ended in 2002.
In January 2019, the fifth generation of the Supra, which was co-developed with the G29 Z4, was introduced.
There were not many changes for the 1983 model year, but there was an increase in power output to 150 hp (112 kW; 152 PS) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from the same 5M-GE engine. The only real change in the engine area was the switch from a vacuum advanced to an electronic advanced distributor, yet that did not increase the power output. Toyota switched to a 4.10:1 rear gear ratio for the P-type and a 3.73:1 for the L-type. As for the optional automatic transmission, they replaced the A43DL 4-speed with a newly designed A43DE 4-speed. It had an electronic controller that would adjust its shift pattern for a balance between performance and economy. It was the first in the industry to provide an electronically controlled transmission (ECT). This allowed the driver to choose either the "power" driving mode or "normal" driving mode at the touch of the button. The power mode provided the quickest acceleration and the normal mode provided the best all-around performance.
The interior virtually had no changes, but changes to the exterior included a switch to a power mast antenna, mudflaps on all models, and the addition of headlight washers on the P-type. All B-pillar and nose badges for cars sold in North America read "Celica Supra" and only the P-type was available in two-tone colour schemes.

We asked for it - YOU gave it - TOYOTA. 1983, the 'Canary Yellow' craze was dead. Armor All had just expanded their product line and 'Amour All Stripes' were on EVERYTHING - not just cars. This is a definite Tip-O-The-Hat for days long gone. Thanks for such a smooth build - it's Supra.

Damn. I had this kit IN MY HAND and wasn't sure about the box content. I had a 1984 Supra in 1990 and it was silverblue metallic with 4 tone blue velour interior. It was a 5 speed and had the same engine they all had (5M-GE but don't ever remember seeing a turbo option). Appearance-wise it's the same with a few small differences. I'd like to build this kit and add the black wing the '84 had at the top of the hatch. Next time this is in my hand it will stay there.
@jridge16
@jridge16 8 месяцев назад
I had a red 1984. Turbo wasn't offered from the factory, but I believe it was HKS that you could buy one from. I want that black wing on mine too. Alot of folks said the suspension parts were a bear to fit. No mention of that here - did it all fit well? Wasn't sure I could build the car without those ugly oversize, no-stock fender flares - but see from your video the more stock flares are available. I need to get out and find one. Hobby Lobby says their out of stock - may have to pay full price...

When my wife and I were first dating, she drove a faded white Celica. Not the fancy Supra. Probably a 78? Dunno. It presented as a POS but was ahead of its time & the A/C still worked. An ugly little tank that was pretty functional. This build brings back those memories!
@randytaylor1258
@randytaylor1258 Год назад
Lovely job, Chris. I would have played with some extra metallic tones under the chassis and maybe some contrasting trim in the interior. But the dove gray interior contrasts nicely off the body. And thr body is spectacular -- the stripes only accent the deepness of the blue. Some MPC kits have a lot to offer and you've brought out everything this Supra has to offer. Beautiful!
@finneganparker3839
@finneganparker3839 Год назад
Personally Chris I'm a big fan of colored molded model kits as it just makes the whole model building experience more "fun" and has the benefit of being able to get rid of mold lines easier. also if the kit is molded in a darker tone the chrome looks amazing out of the box only really needing a black wash to give it that "realism", as always amazing build and keep up the good work!!
@finneganparker3839
@finneganparker3839 Год назад
I know sometimes colored bodies will interfere with painting which is sadly a downside of molded color, but it isn't a big deal if your doing a similar to the molded color.

Round 2 is impressing me. Tons of great re-release kits with, overall, great molding. The two Round 2 kits I've built recently show both the wear and age of the molds, and the love brought to optimizing quality from those molds. Just finished their AMT '89 Batmobile. What a pleasure it was to build. More positive n for Round 2!

@chassegallerie2910
@chassegallerie2910 Год назад
@@invaderkendall Yes, Round 2 is the owner of AMT and MPC, along with other brands. They do re-pops often. However, for a while, it was only the kits that were re-released over 9000 times they were popping up. However, with Revell making new tooling of the "popular" kits they'd repop in mass, they started going into older, more obscure ones that people had been asking for for decades, plus, they finally started to understand that the nostalgia wave won't always keep them afloat, so they've started making new kits like the 2021 Charger R/T and the new Bronco.

Do they make it again? I think it was revell or amt. Parents had a white fully loaded 83 celica supra ( white on white, blood red leather interior...white wide body moldings, body color). It got stolen. Found it in AZ on side of highway stripped...in 85. Bought an 86.5 supra.

Question about re-release model kits that are highly sought after but not being made: the following kits cost an arm and a leg by box collectors who don’t believe in constructing them but would sell out in minutes if there were re-releases : Convoy Mack truck 1/24 BJ and the Bear K100 1/24 The Fall Guy Truck HardCastle and McCormick Coyote Both Smokey and the Bandit Rigs 1/24 American Graffiti Deuce Coupe and dragster Two Lane Blacktop 55 Chevy Just to name a few, I think people would agree theses need to be re-released and would sell immediately.
@hpiguy
@hpiguy Год назад
Some of those have been reissued quite a few times, just not with the licensed decals or packaging. Licensing adds a massive cost to any kit so they just reissue it as a regular GMC or Mack, etc. I have zero influence on what gets made, but I do know that the model companies always welcome nice letters suggesting what builders want to buy.

@@hpiguy thanks for the info, love the channel. Ya, I just did BJ and the Bear’s K-100 using the Tyrone Malone Hideout and the Great Dane reefer trailer along with a lot of frame mods and extra parts I have lying around. I also did the RD trucking Mack again with extra parts.. it’d just be great if they’d re-release the originals as much as they are licensed to release some of the other less admirable kits. This was Toyota’s Camaro, and in many aspects it out-Camaro’d the Camaro. The TPI 350 might have been faster 0-60 than the turbo straight 6 but not by much. And then in every other aspect the Supra was a better car. Better handling, better ride quality, better reliability, better build quality. These things handled like they were on rails, right from the factory. The modern Supra is a BMW. Too bad. Toyota once had the soul of enthusiasts. Now they just build Camrys and hybrids. Appliances for those who know or care nothing about cars. Anything exciting they have to farm out.
