Scott and Gary Show- Beastie Boys and Butthole Surfers Gibby Hanes is my spirit animal www.teepublic.... www.redbubble.c... Buy my stuff silentrob668.bl... so much stuff
It's awesome to see Kate Schellenbach on drums! Rare footage of her as one of the founding members of The Beastie Boys. She played with them from 81 to 84. Her punk cred is solid.
It’s so weird seeing Mike as the leader and MCA an ad rock not being equal leaded, lol. They both kind of seem shy here, which is crazy. Mike seems pretty much like a normal punk front man.
I remember going to see the Butthole Surfers in '87. I was flying high on acid and they played something close to this song. I had an acid flashback watching this, because of this exact song. It was mainly the constant drumming over and over near the middle of their set... Shit got real for a sec and I didn't know if I had been poisoned or if I was having a stroke. Kids: Don't do too much acid.
Well, Doc. I do suffer from PTSD. Anything else? I also ate my fair share of LSD. I also shouldn't have to explain myself to these online PhD wannabes.
burntheearth666 Wow. You're so cool. I wish I could be like you. All the time. Cause then I'd be so cool all goddamn day. Making cool comments and cool quips to people on RU-vid like I'm some sort of smart cool guy. Fuck, you're so damn cool. Infact. I'm going to change my whole internet persona to yours. With such a cool name, too. Like burntheplanet666 like some sort of wanna be Satanist. Damn, that would be so cool.
If you would have told me that in 2 years after this was recorded that these 3 cats would have the best selling rap record in America I would have laughed myself into a coma. On November 15, 1986 "Licence To Ill," became one of the fastest selling LP's. It would go on to sell 9 million copies in the States alone.
And if you told me that in a decade the Butthole Surfers would break into the mainstream with a single hit that stayed at Number 1 for the majority of the year, I too would laugh
Music Power yes, the Beastie boys were a hardcore punk band that used to put down the guitars and start to mc at the end of their shows as a joke, but they said the crowd liked the rap more than the hardcore so they decided to do that instead.
That early Surfers footage is amazing, they proved that massive amounts of psychedelic drugs and punk rock were a great combination. It's nice knowing that Hank Wood & The Hammerheads are carrying the torch with the two manic drummer setup.
The Melvins did it for a while too, some great songs came out of that arrangment, "A History of Bad Men" being a downright legendary example of dual drummers done right.
According to Horowitz he and Rick Rubin were about to be pounced on by skinheads with machetes in the street when Gibby pulled up with about ten people in a car and the bad guys ran off. This of a world with out Rick Rubin's contributions to music and then thank Gibby Haynes.
If it happened to be Beastliest Bodega, Running DMCA Strike, and Grey Flag or maybe The Clash or Ramones or Dead Kennedies or something else like that the show would be like my favorite concert I had ever heard of.
The beastie boys were like yeah were pretty punk, pretty edgy, got some lint in the pocket, then bunghole surfers come and literally shit in there mouths
@@TitoMariategui i guess. I'm a beastie fan but I would never say they were ever at any point specially talented especially in comparison to BHS. Not hating, just stating what seems to be pretty objective reality if we take away our "influence" and "records sold" glasses. I'd say they're definitely visiionaries though, especially later on.
@@GBsavant in order to release 5 straight legendary records, influence a whole generation, help to create a culture and be inducted in the RFHOF just to mention some achievements... You definitely gotta be a talented group I think.
@@TitoMariategui we’re talking about talent in comparison to BHS…not records sold, modern influence etc. BHS are obviously better musicians. Are you saying that popularity = musician talent? I love the beastie boys, but they’re not on the same level in that regard. You’re arguing a different thing. Are you telling me drake is a better lyricist than Lupe fiasco? Also “legendary” is an amazingly subjective opinion. Is Floyd mayweather more legendary than sugar ray Robinson even though he has an undefeated record and higher paying wins?
"Frustration, violence, rage, I wanna know, are those some personal experiences" -Scott. "Absolutely, absolutely, Bob" - Gibby . I lmao'd the first time I saw that haha
'white shadow' islike post punk. they quickly moved on to early NYHC, then rap crossover, rock rap, hip hop... all before they were like 21. what a career!
George Pomar It was also stuff like Gang of Four. It's a diverse category, but basically bands that arose in response to the '77 punk milieu, but went off in more angular or non-traditional rock directions. I've never heard the Beasties described that way, but that's how I hear this obscure song. This is not straight forward punk or hardcore, no "blitzkrieg bop" or "egg raid on mojo" here.
Mike D. has said in interviews that in addition to hardcore they were really into bands like Gang of Four, ESG, The Slits, etc. You have to understand that back then things were not so regimented as they are now, a lot of these genres and categorizations are applied mainly in retrospect. I think that's the great thing about punk, it's an approach to creativity, not a specific sound. Gang of Four sounds nothing like the Sex Pistols, and the Sex Pistols sounds nothing like Talking Heads, and Talking Heads sound nothing like The Birthday Party, and The Birthday Party sound nothing like Minor Threat, etc, but they were all part of it.
+pingu53 Actually 84-85 if you see the video from "she´s on it" and the time when they opening from madonna, it was from a punk rock college band to a run dmc style, both great.
BHS are gods of experimentals jams bit this BB.. is fucking gold they should have been filmed more the first 2..3.4.. years of being a organized band at very beginning..
Ha! Love the Buttholes, they were clearly always mad. Even back then Paul Leary looked like he escaped from an asylum. This set, and the film clip to Hurdy Gurdy Man sums them up perfectly. I've always wondered whether their neighbours moved out or just took an overdose.
that is the coolest and earliest shit Ive ever seen/ heard from the Bboys. I cant believe how tight and serious about the music they were at such an early age of talent development. Although predictable, the song was not bad for straight punk. I do remember the female drummer from the" some old bull shit" videos. I wander if she felt awkward with the band name. thanks for sharing
number7gracestreet Beasties took me a minute to understand, when I I first heard them as a "Rap" act. But the BH Surfers' were preceded by their reputation, and I was enthralled from the first minute I heard them.
Goddamn the Surfers are fucking great! I got into them in 84 or 85 and still love listening to that shit today. The Beastie Boys had a couple of ok songs of their own but not in the same league as the Surfers
I like to think this is the moment the beastie boys realized they weren't good enough to be a legitimate punk bank so changed to the snotty punk hip hop band that didn't take anything seriously.
Granted the butt hole surfers are great but the beastie boys at one of the funniest acts in the history of popular music.... These kids lived sarcasm 24 hours a day seven days a week.... I should know I produced there second record.. Just think about the lyrics to the songs Mike D is singing about… He's depressed that his favorite show the White Shadow has gone off the air.... If you're not familiar with that particular television show Google it and you'll understand how ridiculous and funny these lyrics are… Long live the beastie boys
+Barbwire Cockring I had been listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Judas Priest, and all that stuff since my early teens. And then some punkers I met introduced me to the Suicidal Tendencies, and later the Buttholes. I never looked at music the same way ever again, until I started listening to Zappa. That having been said, I consider myself fortunate to have been introduced to alternative music while acid was still available. A couple other bands worth a mention are SNFU and D.O.A.
The Beastie Boys invented and refined modern hip-hop, coming on the heels of greats like Grand Master Flash. They reinvented that sound over the next three decades constantly remaining the freshest pioneers in a genre they practically define. Hall of Fame legends. And also, The Butthole Surfers are in this video.
The Butthole Surfers invented and refined modern Psychedelic Punk Rock. Cumming on the heels of your mama's boots. They destroyed the sound over a bunch of time constantly FSU from the inside out, upside down. Remaining fresh until they rotted remains in a Geronimo skull F**k they impractically demonstrated. Hall of Knives legends. And also,A bunch of NYC Mooks with a good drummer.
