07:15 and 17:18 is Miss India Juhi Chawla She couldn't place in this contest but went on to become a huge Bollywood star later on. She is working in films till date and is a producer as well
I competed for Ms Puerto Rico in Paterson NJ in 1984 I was the only one who received a trophy saying Ms sympatia Its 2022 and I still have the trophy me looking at it now saying wow I can't believe I have something that brung me memories it was just so fun and exciting I also have pictures as well I was also in the parade people just waving I didn't win but I was so glad to participate I missed those days
I just wish that the MU today will return to this simple competition. After preliminaries to pick the semifinals, the contestants will bring down to 12 or 10 then a round of interview, swimsuit, and evening gown competition. Then they will be cut down to either 6(then to final 3) or final 5 for another round of interview with one question.
And the irony of all of this is that Miss Colombia got the highest score in the personal interview of the semifinalists round, 9.2 , but ended as the 4th runner up (5th place).
My most favorite opening of the 1980’s ❤️ One of the best editions too. Just when I thought a Latina could win because the show has a Latin vibe in Miami, a European got a crown. 🥰
USA is amerasian by birth half taiwanese american.. she represented both continent sa well...but Phils looks so exotic reminds me of Tetchie agbayani one of the prettiest faces in phil cinema...
1984 one of the European era at Miss U , 5 of them in the top 10 from Europe , eventual winner Sweden, with only two Latinas. 2016 only one European in top 13, dominated by the Americas with 9, but the eventual winner in that year is France.
25:32 Maria Desiree Verdadero representing the Philippines is on the semifinalist spot and after the two of her fellow relatives, in 2003 Maria Rafaela "Mafae" Yunon finished Miss World 2003 Top 5 finalist and 2019 Maria Andrea "Aya" Verdadero Abesamis as a runner-up of Binibining Pilipinas pageant.
She was so diferent.... Natural and beauty....after this pageant She apeareds at Cosmopolitan's Magazzine... there we can see are how beauty was that lady..... Then her magnific participation in Miss Universe she won the tittle of MISS INTERNATIONAL 1984👏👏👏👏👏
I think that on the morning of this particular Miss Universe Pageant telecast, I was out having my senior pictures taken for Helix High School's Class of 1985 yearbook, The Tartan. GO HELIX HIGHLANDERS!!!! :) :) :) :)
Things that I liked about this pageant: 1. Candidates wore their actual national costume (no huge birds on their heads) 2. They walked naturally on the stage. Unlike walks these days that I find so unnatural and weird 3. Gowns used to be elegant. Nowadays, it seems that the more blindingly shiny it is and the more skin you show, the better Things i didn't like in this show 1. The throne (glad they got rid of it) 2. The host blocking the final 5 while announcing the runners up
Thank you, that is the key word: natural. Now the Miss Universe is fake and cheap in finish and vibe. The way almost all of the candidates act and move are too overrehearsed, too planned, always thinking to be "sexy", too tacky, and now similar to a drag pageant - including the "national costumes". The type of people attending today's MU pageants as well - not the quality of real MU years. How unfortunate.
@@CrystalCollector-g4n The over-business side of the pageant would have really taken off in the 80s when in the society, there was the boom of abundance, money, and the general attitude that all of that is limitless and neverending. You'll notice how the 80s started to see squabbles between committees and sponsors of Miss Universe (and other pageants) regarding pageant hosting including both fighting for hosting rights, and conflict over deals falling out.
This is one of the best openings, the music is very lively. Thou many openings in the 80s are remarkable but the music used in this opening got me LSS. 😂
The final five were favourites, but it was clear a part of the audience was shocked and not happy when Miss Colombia was announced as fourth runner-up only. You could hear their jeering.
There were a lot of Colombians in there of course as the pageant was held in Miami.... She was very pretty but her neck was a bit thick and she looked a bit overweight compared to the rest, she came last in the swimsuit.
@@dubbelhenke854 That's the problem, even more so today. If everyone else is too thin or even borderline anorexic, then someone like Miss Colombia would seem "fat" when they are far from being so.
@@alexsdb9712 I dont think that anyone of the girls 1984 was too thin, but you do have a point. I thought she was very pretty and nice, personally I would have had her as 2nd, but I do think that all the top 5 were gorgeous.
@@jja8750 she had a strong Latina looks. Before, to win as Miss Universe the girl has to be charming of which she isn't. For me it's really Sweden or maybe Venezuela.
"I hope the beautiful Scandinavian country of Sweden can have their 4th Miss Universe win someday !!! European MU Winners are the best of all the time... Armi Kuusela, Marlene Schmidt, Corinna Tsopei, Amparo Muñoz, Yvonne Ryding, Angela Visser, Mona Grudt, Oxana Federova and Iris Mittenaere my favorite MU Winners..."
Sadly the calibre of European delegates of recent years have taken a nose dive, bordering to being *pardon the language* Eurotrash. The only ones left that remained classy are the French delegates thanks to the Miss France Org.
@@pageantdaily8105ms.So.Africa,Ms.Sweden unkempt hair, not befitting a queen.looks unglamourous as if they just got up from bed or got off the hot shower with towel-dried hair.
9:08 - Garbiñe Abasolo, Miss Spain and Miss Photogenic; and when she speaks, she has a big message with the name of her prize. That message covers her face. She was Miss Photogenic, we want to see her face 😂

In the preliminary swimsuit competition Miss Colombia received just 7.2, very low compared to other South American contestants. She must have scored very high in the preliminary interview and evening gown competitions.
Based on the final answer the crown should have gone to South Africa followed by Colombia, Venezuela, Sweden and Philippines. Sweden stumbled through the final answer horribly. Bob did not let Miss Venezuela finish her thought. Miss USA that year is probably a very nice lady but she did not do well here. Her interview sealed her fate. She came across too over rehearsed and the judges saw that.
Miss Venezuela And Miss Sweden Are Always In FrontRunner in 1984❤ Miss Venezuela 1984 Carmen María Montiel And Miss Sweden Areyvonne ryding Are Always In evry Round 1st and 2nd placement 🇻🇪🇸🇪❤
Miss Colombia should have won. Thailand should have been in the top five. Sweden was very sweet and pretty, Philippines very nice too, but I thought Colombia deserved the crown.
I totally agree. I would give her the crown too. Her answer and sincerity is so well deserving of the title. This is like what happened in 2013, Miss Philippines gave the best answer but miss USA won just because she has the prettiest face among the finalists
Phoephoey nothing is wrong with her, it’s just back then usually the winner gets picked on looks, like miss Guam 1982 had the highest scores the whole competition, but Canada won. And in 1980, Miss New Zealand had the best answer
*Spoiler Alert* In the final question (Top 5), Sweden and Philippines should have used interpreters. This year was an example showing that it's best and wise to use an interpreter especially when it's the crucial moments. There's nothing wrong with it if English is not their native language. In fact, it shows Sweden could have had a few more winners if they had used interpreters. The Scandinavian countries and Germany tend to do this and it hurt them.
Sweden and other Miss Swedens should have used interpreters. There's nothing wrong with that. Miss Sweden 1984 didn't really choke, but she just had trouble as English isn't her native language. But she did get her point across even if there were gaps, and then there's the overall impression factor, which the judges clearly followed, hence Sweden winning this Miss Universe title.
@@alexsdb9712 I was in Hamburg in 1984, watched this with two good friends who were Swedes. When it came time for the last question, my Swedish friend said, "Watch, Sweden always screws the final question!" Yet she still won.
This is a resl pageant, unlike today.....so many unnecessary videos and chit chats, and worst of all......platform. For cry out loud, a beauty pageant does’nt need platform.
And besides more commercials today being a reason why the pageant broadcast is now three hours long compared to the traditional two hours, it's the silly wokeness that is the cause of the inferior Miss Universe production now.
@@dubbelhenke854 It's not a Miss English or Miss Anglophone pageant. The world is vast. The organization knows this and expects that not everyone speaks English. They are looking for the content and the overall qualities to represent their organization. They know the (non-english speaking) winner will ultimately learn some English as they have tutoring during their reign. Irene Saez is one of many like this.
