I got a 1987 Foundation in the mail Saturday morning. It is black and maple too. I changed the strings, and set it up, and it kills! I will never, ever sell it!
I'VE GOT THIS BASS...SAME YEAR, SAME COLOR, SAME MODEL...ONE OF THE BEST BASSES I HAVE EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE...GR8 VIDEO BY THE WAY...THANKS MR. JOHNSON...
I gotta say, that was one of the coolest bass reviews I have ever seen! Warning: this review contains 100% awesomeness in terms of bass, playing, and reviewer personality!
I second the opinions here. I've got an early 90's USA Peavey Foundation and it sounds just like a Fender Jazz but with an even slimmer neck. Great guitar and they're practically giving these away on Ebay.
Yes. Very much like a Fender jazz. mine's LH. I bought it 1986 in Saskatoon. I had gone in determined to buy a jazz but the Foundation was right beside it. Similar sound with an even slimmer neck! and it was quite a bit cheaper. I still have mine!
I’m glad I never sold mine. I had a crappy bass amp back in the 80s and I suck as a bass player then. But now with the new bass amp gear I have, my Peavey has gone into a time warp. Sounds amazing!!!
whoa! That is AWESOME! I've got an old Foundation S, and it sounds fantastic! Of course, I can't play anywhere near like you, Mr. Johnson...sure wish I could hear my Foundation through your hands! Great Job!
Awesome bass. I just picked up a 1983 model...must have been stored for 30 years as it is dusty and has gooey foam all over it (from those original cases) still with the original strings - not a scratch on it. After some cleaning, everything looks mint original... including original case, metal knobs and a Peavey Basic 40 amp all for only $100! Don't think the guy knew what he had - he wasn't a musician. Worth so much more.
That burpy bridge tone is to die for. Sounds better than a Fender jazz bass, to me. I bought an early '90s Foundation, it has a longer bass horn for better balance, and it still has Super Ferrites. I love it. I wish I could play like this!
Awesome video, and awesome playing! I just recently bought one of these from a pawn shop with the super ferrite pickups. How does it compare to your other basses? I always seem to grab my Foundation over my MIM J bass and my Carvin LB-70, it just feels so right! They don't make them like they used to!
Nice playing even though it was years ago I have the same bass same year same color Although I foolishly put lights in the neck ! That's bad about peavey keeping the old knobs they go for $25 each these days
These basses are great at any price in my opinion. USA made, well built, GREAT SOUNDING AND PLAYING! 200 bucks is a steal if you bought one made from '83-'89.
I was a Peavey Artist a few years ago when they re-painted my bass. You can check the year of your bass by going on Peavey's Wikipedia page. It has a list of serial numbers that tells the year of production.
How's the balance on these? I HATE neck dive. I may be snagging a white one in the next couple days with rosewood fretboard and original case for $250. Seems like a good deal.
@@dacajo1 I did get it. I took it apart and cleaned it all up. Set up was a B*TCH! Had to get the special truss rod tool, and it took FOREVER to get it down far enough to make an adjustment. Action was still too high, so I bought some standard Fender-style saddles and finally got it set up well. It plays like a dream now. So much so that I'm keeping this and selling my jazz bass.
Great basses, I'm actually looking at ebay for replacing one that I sold. It's exactly like yours. What the strings are? Are the strings new. Your bass sounds amazing, ao underrated basses.
I just recently wanted to play bass, well we went to a pawn shop to get me one and we found a Peavey foundation for $100 and bought it I don't know much, could you give me a little advice?
dacajo1 is your foundation one of the narrow neck ones. My 84' foundation is. I repainted it myself, need to repaint though. your foundation looks sweet. Props to ya.
Peavey will repaint their old basses? :D I have an old Foundation (which i sold and then re-purchased off the same guy), the serial ends in 1986 which made me think it was from '86 at first. but i did a bit of research and it looks like it might be a 93, it has the 4 saddle top loaded 5 bolt bridge though
I suspect that you could make any bass sound good so not sure if the foundation is a good bass or not. One has come up for sale and I remember trying them in the 80s. Didn’t like them then but mostly because of the classic look. Thinking about it differently now.
OH man......wow....geez David....what strings do you use?? I've got that same bass, and I'm not the worst player in the world, but DAMN...my tone lacks that GROWL you're getting! and are those strings like 6 minutes old? They RIIIING like crazy. This video needs to be sent to every bassist who believes you have to spend $2k to get an awesome sound. You are fantastic man!
@@dacajo1 How cool of you to reply! Thanks bro for the info! Do you mind sharing with me the gauge you use? And how long have you been playing? You just have that command over the instrument that comes with years and years of dedication. I love it!
The ‘80s Peavey Foundations are head and shoulders above the ‘90s ones, I’ve had 2 ‘80s and 2 ‘90’s foundation, and the ‘80s are hands-down the far better instruments. Sound is deeper, throatier, growlier. The build is better, too. I’ve used the ‘80s Foundation bass for recording and have gotten compliments from the engineer. I have so many guitars and basses, but the Foundation is really special.
Seriously, to my mind, this is the one bass you need... and at a faction of the pice of Fender or Gibson basses. I have Fender and Gibson basses, too, but if I chose one bass to do it all and not break my back, it would be the ‘80s Foundation.
The knobs they took off are highly sought after and no doubt Peavey had buyers already lined up waiting to buy them and who were willing to pay a considerable amount for them. The moral of the story is kids if you have the old Peavey knobs remove them before having any work done to the bass. They just might disappear like this guy's did.
have had my left-handed foundation for over 30 years; I've been through other models, other brands.... I experimented too much as this foundation has always been equal to the others or even better....
