"There'll be no Love Cats follow-up; there'll be no Love Dogs, or whatever..." - Robert Smith
Robert Smith chats to Richard Skinner about why he left Siouxsie and the Banshees, the critical and commercial response to The Glove - his collaboration with Steve Severin - and the future of The Cure. Is the "commercial with a capital C" Love Cats the sort of thing we can expect from The Cure going forwards?
This clip is from Whistle Test, originally broadcast 13 November, 1984.

Big tour of the USA, right now, 39 years later, way past the young age of 25 - the whole band still sounding great! The best Cure songs are the ones that aren't played on pop radio, in my opinion - so deep. The Glove's "Blue Sunshine" is not to be missed. The 2006, remake is a great album - 31 tracks of 2 singers/styles of the same songs provides quite a comparison in listening. Loved this interview!

Amazingly, I was there and found my ticket stub recently ($6?). My recollection was they were extremely tight musically, played a couple of early hits but stuck with setting the mood with a handful of slow burners and a lot of silhouette lighting, similar to Echo and The Bunnymen. The Top was solid but not their best. An era when you could catch ABC, Haircut 100, Bow Wow Wow, OMD for $6-$7. Amazing time.

I was at Uni in the 80s when The Cure were at their peak. I never cared for that genre at that time, but they were idolised by most students. Most sympathised with his songs, subject matter, general lifestyle and attitude. Now 40 years later it’s clear why most black kids and myself didn’t care much for the genre and the songs, as none really reflected life in our community. As a black student, in that era there were far more pressing priorities like fitting in even amongst the ‘oddball’ white students who didn’t fit in amongst their own white peers. Racism was everywhere and it was a part of the fabric at Uni, especially with so few black students who made it to the gleaming spires of academia only to find that they were treated and felt like a fish out of water. All these years later and just taking the time to sit back and appreciate great artistes like Robert Smith and The Cure and it’s very clear he’s a highly intelligent and very talented musician, songwriter and artist. Not quite the weak weirdo freak mumbling emo stuff for socialist introverts that I had in my own immature and bigoted mind at that time. I’m thankful I can appreciate the songs even in my advanced middle age 😂 Many songs still resonate true and binding well beyond what I originally perceived as just growing pains of youth

Siouxie falls out with most people, she recorded one song with Morrissey & they never spoke again (but then again he’s got form too). I had the pleasure once of working in the same building as Janice Long (BBC Radio WM) in Brum. We chatted about her 80’s heyday & all the top bands she met etc...and she mentioned the only person who was ever vile to her was Siouxie & it was an ongoing thing. Janice laughed it off with me as she never knew why & just said “I was a fan of the Banshees & all the emerging indie bands & always played their material but Siouxie just simply hated me”. I replied that she should’ve been pleased there was a talented frontline FEMALE DJ” as there wasn’t many on Radio 1 back in the mid-80s.
@davedogge2280
@davedogge2280 Год назад
@@standenberg Pity that, Siouxie always struck me as a sassy and strong willed person but never someone who was a bit aggressive towards people if she didn't like them or difficult to get along with but then again you never know was this behaviour justified ? In an ideal world all old relationships from bands from the 80s would still be cemented and they would let bygones be bygones but .. nope it's not that way. I had a chance to see The Creatures in Preston in the late 80s and I kick myself for not doing that and I was too busy to catch the Banshees in 1996 when they ended and that one off in 2002.
