That final sentence....'Essentially, the monarchist system allows people to believe there are people who are better than you - for no good reason. That's why it's absurd.' Absolutely nailed it. Love you Robert.

I took some food to Robert Smith's room when The Cure were staying at a hotel where I worked in the 90s. He opened the door wearing a black t-shirt, black boxer shorts and black woolly socks. He never disappoints, and it's good to see a rock legend who loathes the monarchy as much as I do.
@@EphemeralProductions Because he's been overweight for much of his adult life and when you combine that with his other nefarious habits, it'll mean a much smaller lifespan which, to Cure fans and Smith's family and friends, isn't so good.
Your better than a murderer, or a bigot or a racist or a thief or a junkie or a gang banger or a drunk. Your better than a narcissist or a psychopath. Your better than a authoritarian dictator or a facist. We are not all equal thats nonsense. we are all individual and different. Not nicey nice clones. Some people have and are born into responsibility. The institutetion of the monarchy was here long before you, its unique in the world and somthing to be proud of. In my personal opinion it's what inspired the war effort
As Keith Richards, rightfully, said : "I wouldn't let that family near me with a sharp stick, much less a sword." 😂😂😂 Hats off, MISTER Robert SMITH !!!
@@mauriceortiz8817 Yeah, who would've thought with the drugs he's taken all these years. Good old Keef being awfully presumptuous that Queen Elizabeth, now King Charles, had/has ANY intention of giving him a Knighthood. Don't worry Keith, it'll never happen.
Honestly Idgaf about looks and it’s all thanks to this dude. He’s always had this aura of sensitivity, high intellect, a critical thinker, and he’s so precise in his words. I adore him so much. He’s so fucking grounded he knows he’s not “above” anyone nor is anyone else “above” him or other people. He’s FOR the people. and I will always adore him wow. (Man if there was a an alternative universe out there I hope we got married because I don’t think anyone else understands what it means to be human but Robert smith)
I'm just thinking of a Monument Mythos-inspired alternative universe where Robert Smith is the president (or equivalent of a president) of England or Great Britain.
@@GiovanniCloud lol thanks this made me giggle. I bet he’d be the best person to lead but like in his own way? He’d probably have a council group of people that are always in the know about the country/ place he looks after/ has ‘leader’ position and he makes laws and such based off these things or like actually make changes based of what ppl need and say they want.
(You basically just described what being a 'good' 🤴 would be! 😄 Also, instead of a 👑 he'd just always have a Gretch nearby!; ) Even in alternate worlds or universes, though, he'd still have been drawn to, found and married his Mary: )
Inbred, they legitimise the class based inequalities, and religious hypocracies that mar our country. They preserve the servile, fawning nonesense. I salute you Sir.
Never knew, but not surprised. Robert Smith has always seemed very cool and grounded and not at ALL self-centered or about the whole absurd celebrity-worshipy thing.
Rod Mac - Spot on! Now we're going to have tolerate all the sycophantic creeps holding onions in front of their eyes, particularly so-called celebrities and brown tonguing 'royal experts' when they're really all dining out on their self ingratiation.Three year old toddlers are blubbling and saying "she meant a lot to me", I'm not making this up, they've already been indoctrinated at that age! There is a perpetual myth that Britain exports tourism to foreign visitors on a gigantic scale on the back of the existence of the Monarchy. There is no credible evidence for this anymore, there hasn't been for decades, and in contemporary times the evidence points the other way to scepticism and dislike for their history, particularly in Commonwealth countries. Charles is a knob although not necessarily an unlikeable one, I'd like to know how he mysteriously went from getting just four shit O Levels to supposedly having top A Levels and an Oxbridge degree. It's all manipulated nonsense.
@@jamesanthony5681 exactly...the guy is a tool. I'm not a fan of the concept of a monarchy either, but when you compare it to the current mayors and PM in the UK, and look at what they have allowed re: mass immigration, lockdowns, erosion of free speech, etc... you begin to understand what the monarchy is SUPPOSED to represent. The real shame is the mess Harry and Meghan made, and don't even get me started on Prince Andrew.
@@jamesanthony5681 1:50 He says William has done nothing. I don't follow nor particularly care for "the monarchy" but this from wikipedia: William then trained at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst prior to serving with the Blues and Royals. In April 2008, William graduated from Royal Air Force College Cranwell, joining RAF Search and Rescue Force in early 2009. He served as a full-time pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance from July 2015 for two years. The Prince performs official duties and engagements on behalf of the King.[3] He holds patronage with over 30 charitable and military organisations, including the Tusk Trust, Centrepoint, and London's Air Ambulance Charity. He undertakes projects through The Royal Foundation, with his charity work revolving around mental health, conservation, and emergency workers. In December 2014, he founded the "United for Wildlife" initiative, which aims to reduce worldwide illegal wildlife trade. In April 2016, William, his wife Catherine and his brother Harry initiated the mental health awareness campaign "Heads Together" to encourage people to open up about their mental health issues. In October 2020, William launched the Earthshot Prize, a £50 million initiative to incentivise environmental solutions over the next decade. I checked Robert Smith's entry on what he's contributed to society on wikipedia:
@@strangevisions5162 Yes, it's not as though they sit around and do nothing. Princess Anne for example, works very hard and does a ton of charity work that many people are not aware of.
So refreshing to hear. Any inherited power is suspect. People should earn and deserve the responsibility of any control or influence over others. Much respect for Robert Smith.
@@thewizardssleeve119 you’re clearly not paying attention to the current government’s erosion of democracy, while the royals divide the time between ostracising the black one and protecting the sex trafficker’s mate.
So why didn’t the queen stop Johnson proroguing Parliament? She’s not doing anything about this govt. Why- because they are just over privileged figureheads. Nothing more. Robert is spot on
Huh? They don't rule. They don't govern. They don't make laws. They don't banish people to the Tower of London. Great Britain went to a parliamentary system of government - a democracy - during the 19th century. Didn't you get the memos?
The Tories are pretty much trying to ban anti-establishment teaching in schools, a very sad state of affairs. Look at the faux-outrage when a portrait of the queen was removed from a student common room in at one of the Oxbridge universities

I suggest you listen to him, instead of hearing him and deafening his words by your pre-conceived and uneducated opinions.
@@benvallentine7197 Listen to him. The man needs a history or civics lesson. Great Britain is a parliamentary democracy, with elected members of parliament that sit in the House of Commons. This is not 1624. The Royal Family is a figurehead - an historic link to the past (good AND bad), and if that is abolished, then tourism dollars to the UK will go down (guaranteed!) over the next 5, 10, 20, 40 years, and blokes like him will ask, "WTF happened ?"
@@jamesanthony5681 He explains it quite clear here, by questioning why a modern democracy still has a monarchy. We all know the monarchy has no real effect over the government (although Charles has expressed his desire to change that), but the monarchy represents an outdated class system that still promotes their lives and needs as more important than everyone else. Which is not right in todays day of equality. Tourist dollars are not more important than our lives, and tourists don't go to the UK to meet the royals. Leave the history to the buildings and landmarks. The royal family don't do anything for society. Their jobs are to appear for photo opportunities for charities. All the while promoting that they are better than everyone else. Take Charles for example. The whole purpose of his entire life has been to wait for the day Queen Elizabeth dies. That really is it. He hasn't done anything else. And this is what Robert is saying.
I totally agree, seeing Kates gurning face actually makes me want to 🤮 who on Earth do these scrounges think they are. Love that Robert thinks like this.
I love The Cure and this has made me admire them more . Robert , is expressing my thoughts about the monarchy. Unlike other rock musicians his knighthood is now gone.
If you are a politician, you might enjoy going to the Royals' parties. They must be more exciting than parties held by politician who are in only for a short time.
@@jamesanthony5681 also if you’re that worried about the tourist dollars, kick them into a council flat and charge people to view palaces. Simple. But make sure it’s a flat where the lift doesn’t work
@@mscatherinelong67 Are you a Brit? If you abolish the monarchy and sever that link to the past (good and bad, as it was) then tourism to the UK will drop over the next 10, 20, 30+ years. Guaranteed. That's not a stupid argument. That'll be a reality.
Someone somewhere said that one should never meet their idols because that leads to disappointment. This person sure never heard of Robert Smith! It is mind-blowing (in the best sense) how amazing bands, who created amazing songs such as The Cure and Depeche Mode, turn out to be even better people and citizens.
Is david gahan really such a great person? Lol, really....he was the one least grounded of the bunch who took his fame and money and went on a one way ticket to self destru tion....almost destroyed his band and was the reason the most talented musician of the lot left and that band was never quite the same again. Hes not grounded.....he acts like such a rock star...its pathetic when you think of the curly haired geek he was when they started.
@@mapndo2337 Dave struggled with addiction and depression for decades, and that nearly ended his life - and I don't equate that to having a bad character. Many bands went through this same issue, and not all survived it. I'd suggest more recent interviews of his - he's way past the young dude who's enamored by fame, fortune and living in the fast lane. Dave may express himself differently from Rob Smith, but their message on social and political issues is quite similar. They are on the opposite spectrum of the likes of Morrissey, who has revealed himself to be a rotten human being despite the fact that his music is absolutely brilliant!

There is more music and musicians in the world than politicians/police/lawyers etc…when does music-spirituality finally take over the lying game we’ve all suffered for so long?
I’m astonished how we still have a monarchy. It’s absurd and I hate the worship of the royals. I didn’t celebrate the jubilee the Queen can piss off. Also I’ve got no respect for people with titles and royal honours
Every day, the Daily Mail columnists stick their tongues firmly up the arses of the royal family; any bollocks trivia or speculation over their clothes is considered by them to be worthy of relegating serious news matters to the bottom of the pile. Please bury Nicholas Witchell, Jenny Bond and every public school 'royal expert' slime with HRH and do us a favour. I remember as a ten year old boy in 1977 that I though the Silver Jubilee was a load of crap and, at fifty five years old, my view hasn't altered at all. At that tender young age, I already could not bear how people with a totally abstract relationship with an institution could pretend that it's like loving your immediate relatives. It's fake.
reward on merit , govern by election , hierarchies are wrong and the antithesis of human rights , no-one is inherently better than anyone else , yes this

First, The Cure is one of my all time favorite bands. Second, listening to Robert Smith dress down the monarchy is so refreshing. I’m so tired of the PR campaigns that keep them propped up like Disney characters. Time to dissolve the firm.
Yes it was “refreshing” for me too, didn’t know he’d speak so ballsy about such a potentially dangerous topic. Was shocked years ago when I heard The Cure were playing an anti-porn concert somewhere and that was OUT THERE for me.
He's Always been this way. He never changes, no lie, He gets better. Got to see The Cure on Wednesday 5/24/23 Hollywood Bowl. They made me Cry, sing, scream, laugh and at one point Howling. I loved the Cure. I was 18 years old in 1980, it was a different world back than in Australia. Such great artists who wrote music that came from their inner soul, at 18 I could relate and immerse myself into the lyrics. I thought these guys understand us. The Clash were another favourite of mine.
After a summer of Royal celebrations. This video finally made me feel heard and understood. I thought there was no one doing critical thinking in this country
He's of course correct, but he could've articulated it better. The very idea that a person should have immense wealth, power and privilege purely because of the family they were born into is totally absurd. The point I like to make to monarchists is 'imagine we don't have a monarchy. Now give me ONE GOOD REASON why we should have one'. They NEVER have a reason. There ISN'T one.
Right on …his music is the most articulated thing I’ve ever heard and it’s Fing awesome! Anyone who that Can sing about trees and make it interesting is articulate! Love that song ❤
I take it he didn't queue up for 12 hours to walk past at a closed pine Box. The English are strange they seem to love their so called betters.they love to bow and love to serve.
I never bother to know opinions of musicians I listen to as I prefer to have their music speak for itself but - wow - I admire Robert even more because of this.
It was very disappointing that local people in the UK blamed the Eastern European people in the UK which led to Brexit. There are lots of unbelievably wealthy people in the UK. The gap between the rich and the poor is so visible.
Refreshing to hear. Recently with the queen dying it's like man why do people care so much? What did she or her family ever do for the greater good of the world? Why do people especially outside of the uk care so much? I'm not an intolerable person but I'm sick of hearing about her and her fuckin family 😂
Robert Smith and The Cure, are just f....ing great. Keep up the good work man, you just awesome in many ways. Is so f...ing unreal, all the talent coming from England, starting with Charles Chaplin, I really admire England, so much talent coming out of a little country, amazing.
