1984's Two Minutes Hate Explained 

For what it's worth, the I just checked the 1950 Norwegian translation, which has a phrase that would back-translate as "cutting sound", very likely translated from "screech." I think we can conclude that "screech" is the older and proper reading, but some modern editions screw up. A more fatal misprint in many versions of 1984 occurs in the last chapter, where Winston writes "2 + 2 = 5" in the dust on his table, indicating that he has fully succumbed to O'Brien's brainwashing in the Ministry of Love. However, some editions manage to leave out the final "5" and so make it appear as if Winston leaves open the question of what the correct sum is, maybe suggesting that he is not entirely brainwashed after all. Sadly, this glimmer of hope is just a misprint! I believe even the Radford movie has Winston writing the incomplete equation without the final "5."

@@Cenindo I think you might be right about the Radford scene. Maybe it was deliberate, a small, subtle glimmer of hope not present in the book. The only thing I can think of right now on the change in some editions of the book is that at some point "speech" was substituted as Goldstein was about to speak and they had "speech" on their mind; "screech" just makes sense given the context and analogy. Weird. It makes me wonder that if something like that can change in just a few decades since publication, imagine how many changes occur in something like the Bible there's been. I believe the original texts were written in Greek and then translated many times. Crazy to think how are in that kind of thing! 🤔😆

But modern commenters have pointed out that Soviet communism was never "nice" under Lenin/Trotsky and then "corrupted" under Stalin. These folks were all pretty ruthless and quite willing to commit mass murder to establish their new system. So if Goldstein was actually a real person, he might indeed have been less enthusiastic about free speech and democracy if HE had ended up on top.

Whether or not Goldstein is even real is the first question

I take the view right now that he's both. I think "Goldstein" existed and was either purged or indeed escaped into exile, but may be dead by the time of the plot. The persona of Goldstein will likely live on forever in one form or another, or at least as long as the Party lasts. O'Brien assures us of this during Winston's interrogation.

​@nineteen-eighty-four-lore in my opinion, if Goldstein did manage to escape. He's most likely in the Disputed zone areas, because outside of information that would have been vulnerable to the other two superstates if he had gone to them I don't see him going to either one of the two

@@nineteen-eighty-four-lore this is likely the case, because Goldstein is a not so subtle reference to Trotsky who was similarly ousted by Stalin and then portrayed as a boogeyman/scapegoat by the Party. Orwell was writing based on experiences with the world as it was then. Animal Farm was more clearly about the USSR as it was and 1984 is a warning about totalitarianism in general and what we could devolve into again in the future.

I think the creator's intent is merely to discuss the content of Orwell's novel and try to bring us some needed context and interesting lore about that universe. And then It is up to us to make correlations with real world similarities and of course perhaps discuss them here in the comments section.

The first time i read this was in college and part of me wondered if the whole of tgheir society was a lie, that oceana was the ONLY corrupt place and the rest of the world was free. And someone like Goldstein was the leader of another country trying to free oceana.

You think it's realistic? I think it's highly unrealistic. And I've studied world building for years and I tell you: the Orwell story is one of a dying polity, and one to avoid. People will know the truth, at one point or another. They will know the truth. And then they will all die. Destroyed by a foreign power or by the incessant despair of its own citizens.

This is what they were building to. They were planning to, in the future, separate newborns from their mothers and indoctrinate them into Party loyalty from birth. In addition to eradicating the “sex instinct” the Party would love to eradicate romantic and parently love too- anything that interferes with “love” for the party. This “love” being hatred towards others, because hate is a stronger emotion yet easier to control.

No, it's the correct quote from the version I'm using. I've checked three different sources to be sure. Interestingly, however, the Blackstone audio book does narrate it as "screech" and the Internet Archive version (which looks older) does have "screech". "Screech" makes sense given the analogy. There must be some editorial mistakes or misprints going on here. Lol
