In the late 1970s and early 1980s, in the wake of the growing interest in personal computers around the world, France aimed to establish its own computer industry and reduce its dependence on foreign technologies. To achieve this, the French government initiated the "Plan Informatique pour Tous" which means “Computing for All”. The French electronics company Thomson was chosen to develop microcomputers to be used in schools for educational purposes.
