Favorite Hawkeye game of all time!!! I remember watching this at home with my dad, I've never been more glued to the TV watching a college football game before or since that game!
I remember hearing about Coach frys coaching tree. Virginia I'm talking about the defensive coordinator Gary Miller from Michigan cuz his son was playing linebacker at the time so that's the only name I just heard just rewatching the game just now. Was a big fan of this hour team when I was a kid
Thank you for posting this. I had to work on the farm that day, splitting firewood, listening by radio - as a 15 year old kid I felt like I was on the field for every play. Ronnie Harmon and Chuck Long made us feel like we were big time, only lost the Heisman to the best athlete of all-time, Bo Jackson, by 1 vote. Iowans were blessed to have 2 sports-Dads then, Hayden Fry and Dan Gable. Men you could respect, men who were exactly what you saw.
@@mikeigotravel9034 Good memory - maybe it was something like the closest vote ever. It was a great 2 man race and no shame in losing to the best athlete in college history.
@@tomcollins5112 Sad but true. Imagine if they had the coaching, especially for QB, and Chuck Long could have been hitting his stride right as Barry Sanders came in... what if...
Grew up on the west coast, remember watching this game with my Dad, we loved watching midwest college football, we were both linemen. This was a big one in '85, and a defensive dandy! Those commercials were a gas.
Grew up on the east coast.....of Canada haha. Absolutely loved these Saturday afternoon games. Didn’t really have a favourite, just took them game by game on tv. But I liked the name Hawkeyes, and with the crowd going nuts, I got behind Iowa. I cheered when they won. My mother asked what I was watching, so I told her it was some college football game from the States. Fun times, and I always loved the bowl games. Go Hawkeyes👍
I was 50 miles away at the time, living and working in Illinois. But I will always remember my native state winning this all-important game at a time when there was no instant replay, and the home crowd could be penalized for cheering so loudly that their opponents could not hear when they needed to.
#2 Iowa got crushed by Purdue at home today. I thought watching the game from 36 years ago, today (almost), would cheer me up. And boy, are the commercials interesting compared to today.
I remember when I was a kid a Detroit radio station made a parody of the song "Don't Worry Be Happy". At the very end was the line "don't worry, whatever it is it will pass... unless it's Chuck Long". Every time I hear Chuck Long's name I hear that song/line in my head ".
Iowa totally dominated this game and Michigan was lucky to be in the lead for most of the second half. If not for Helverson's catch being called incomplete, the final dramatics wouldn't have been necessary.
This was probably the best number one two game i ever seen michigan play hesrtbreaking loss and i belueve michigan would have won the national title had they won it
Hayden Fry was an excellent coach and man! He was the nemesis for Michigan during this era. Chuck Long was a fantastic QB and is an excellent man as well. Iowa was a tough team, with sound fundamentals and great game plans.
I watched this game on tv. But I miss those crowd noise games that don’t seem to occur so much now. Also reply would have given that first TD and the first TD for MI would have been placed just short because his knee was down. I like this just let them play better. The worst now is when reply still gets it wrong. Oh. There just wasn’t enough evidence BS.
And a very interesting one it was, with Jim Nantz and Pat Haden then (Jim Nantz just getting started with CBS, and having a 30-plus year career flowering from it [NFL, The Masters, college hoops, college football, you name it])!
As the last commentor stated every Fry assistant went onto head coaching top ranked teams which then turned into the assistants of those coaches. The Fry tree was an oak.
@@pianoinfocus6137 Looking back, this was a very childish, immature and rather smart*ss comment to make, games aside. I actually had forgotten I posted this. Goes to show you need to be smart and think before you post.
