As great as Charles Woodson's TD run was, the #1 moment in Michigan Stadium history has to be the '69 defeat of National Champion Ohio State when you consider all of the circumstances surrounding that game. It changed Michigan football forever. In the preceding years Michigan had trouble putting fans in the stands. Since then, the stadium has been full and Michigan is always considered a top-tier football program. All because of one game. It has to be number one.
"Hello Heisman" is the best pure moment in college football history. Its Keith Jackson's signature moment of his legendary career. The timing on his call..the significance of the game..the amazing play itself. Its just so beautiful!
I was at the '69 beating of Ohio State 24 to 12. I was a junior. It was glorious. I could watch all these plays over and over and over, especially the ones involving Ohio State. Go Blue!
I am amused by all the negative comments from the haters and trolls. This vid wasn't created for your joy. Take off the blinders and remember this video is about THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN FOOTBALL, which has a rich history of excellence that few can match. Other than "that school down south" or in the one in tuscaloosa, good luck finding half as many widely televised highlight reels of your favorite. GOOOOOO BLUUUUE!
One thing I can agree on with the maze and blue weirdos is Ohio state sucks but I’m telling you it’s all GO GREEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!💚
Well, that's kinda stupid tbh. Literally both Alabama and Ohio State have rich, storied programs as well. Plus, most of their success wasn't just before the 1940s. I respect Michigan football, but cmon man
He had grace... his moves were smooth and poetic. And decisive. He also played way longer than most NFL players could dream, and was a top threat to the end. Truly a GOAT. The MJ of football.
Sitizen Kane I respectfully disagree. The year Desmond had was unbelievable. He scored 2 td's in every game that yr except the OSU game where he had the punt return. I loved Woodson, but I loved Howard just a little bit more. Plus I was there for #6 and #4.
As an Ohio State fan I'd like to say that I think that it is funny that games against Ohio State were part of so many of these. I am sure that we feel inversely the same. :) Such a great rivalry.
11/27/21 will definitely be number one on the updated list of most memorable moments in Michigan football history! I was there and I got on the field to celebrate with the Wolverines!
Wasn’t around in 1969, but the 2021 victory feels a lot like that did I’m sure, especially after beating them in their place this year. Momentum shifts after years of middling success
@@fritzphelps1785I was extremely excited about the experience I had just went through, but it definitely will make for a great discussion amongst Michigan fans for a long time.
@@Taft27 The horn was from George Patton's jeep. Bo was Patton's nephew. Ufer gave three beeps for a touchdown and one for an extra point, but he just went bonkers with the thing after Carter's touchdown. Ufer was an amazing announcer.
Not a Michigan fan so I don't know all the history, but surprised Desmond Howard didn't get #1. That's got to be the most famous moment, at least to people from outside of Michigan.
the Charles Woodson run was also more crucial because the national championship game was at stake. They were number one at the time and was possibly playing for the championship on their next bowl appearance.
That 1969 game was similar to the 2016 Clemson game, 2017 Iowa, 2018 Purdue where OSU had too many mistakes, penalties and a lack of focus and concentration.
Love this vid, and the memories and moments. However, the fans got this one wrong. It is impossible to say how huge the 1969 win over that school down south was. Michigan beat the best college football team (maybe ever) that year; it established Bo's program at UM; it set the stage for literally everything that came after it (including all of these highlights). It was, and remains, the upset of the century, and it should be number one on this, and all subsequent lists. People have short memories, but this one will last forever.
Was at the game for #5...the play was in my end zone too. Manningham was a beast! I think the Anthony Carter TD in '79 should have placed higher than #7
There are a couple of other plays that should be included. The comeback against Virginia, the pass to Mercury Hayes as time expired to win 18- 17. And how about Denard Robinson pulling out the victory over the Irish in the first night game. Go Blue!!!
We need another Top 10 since this was released 13 years ago! I can think of a few already! Not including the plays that we had against Ohio State 21-23’!
Some great moments for sure. I thought Dreisbach to Hayes, on the last play of the game, to cap off a 17 point comeback to Virginia was better than a couple of these, but hard to choose with so many. Go Blue!
I remember that in 1995, as I was living in VA, andcat a wine festival andcseveralmUVA fans had it on their remote TVs, and Inthoughtvmy M cap was going to becwine-stained forever. Great catch, but it should never have come to that!
Number 1 will always and probably forever be Johnny Wangler to Anthony Carter - 45 yard miracle play with no time left for Schembechler’s team to beat Indiana. Never before, and never since, have the fans gone so crazy, for so long. No one wanted to leave the stadium that day. They hung around for an hour after the game, before they finally began to leave. Goal posts were tore down and paraded throughout the town. It was on the 100th anniversary of Michigan football, on Homecoming Day. Bob Ufer topped it off with the greatest radio call ever: “Johnny Wangler to Anthony Carter will be heard until another 100 years of Michigan football is played.”
As a college peer of Anthony Carter, I loved watching him make plays. Charlie Wood was such a great competitor, he was also fun to watch, BUT as a SC guy who played w/2 Heisman winners, the Des's punt return, Heisman pose. and Keith Jacksons call, was truly ALL THAT. One of the sweetness plays not just in Michigan history but in the history of college football. Period. Should be Number 1 ..hands down.
I'm sorry, but Desmond's punt return against -SU with Keith Jackson saying "Gooooooodbye...Hello Heisman" as he strikes the pose - that not being #1 by leaps and bounds is just wrong. So wrong.
Difference was the Charles Woodson was against Ohio State & had national championship #1 ranking at stake. It was voted on by Michigan fans. I am guessing the allumni who go to the games & were Michigan athletes over the years.
As a diehard lifelong Michigan fan this is hard for me to say, but Kordell Swewart's 70 yd hail mary should have made this list. Granted it beat us but it was still a top 10 Michigan Stadium moment. The title is Michigan Stadium moments, not Michigan Wolverines moments.
A diehard fan would never say that. And IF you were going for any team, it would have been the time Colorado beat us with the bomb with only a few seconds left.
No way man. It's "top" moments, not "worst" moments. And not to take anything away from anyone, that play was a fluke. Stewart's throw was tipped and another Colorado received happened to be in the right place at the right time. Not sure why Stewart gets the credit for this. Anyway, I would imagine it's one of Colorado's top ten moments, rightfully so, but it's not a top anything moment for Michigan.
JOKER Precisely Joker. Petty people who aren't true sports fans don't want to admit that even some of the bad plays that went against us are still top moments in the stadiums history.
For all those that talk about the app state loss. The size of the school determines D1 or D2. It doesnt mean they are garbage...app state won the D2 National Championship that year. So it was the case of a Good Team having a Great season beating a team that was honestly not having a great season at all. Surprising? yes, most definitley. Upset? not so much in my opinion.
It’s not the size of the school, it’s the income the team brings in. And App State at the time wasn’t bringing in as much as a school like Tulsa, which is much smaller in terms of enrollment.
I’m 32 I was born in 1988 and I still member that Woodson return like it was yesterday. I member my dad saying go go and ever sinse then Woodson has always been my favorite football player ever.
So glad to say I was there for all but 3 or 4 of those. Dad was there as a student for Bo v Woody Part I. I would have Desmond's Catch and Return higher but then again, as a 7 year old and Ann Arbor native who worshipped Desmond during that 91 season I am biased. Go Blue!
Wasn’t around in 1969, but the 2021 victory feels a lot like that did I’m sure, especially after beating them in their place this year. Momentum shifts after years of middling success
all arguing for the howard return to be #1 need to remember that the woodson return meant so much more because it was a crucial play in the hunt for a national title. Howard's should be #2 because although his pose is iconic, it only meant the big 10 title not the national title.
I agree with that because as said up top there woodson run lead up to the national championship and Howard was the big ten title but both were phenomenal football players though, go amazing blue, south Ga grip to the casket drop destin to make it. (First power lycan)
As it should be, the 2021 Big Ten Championship will come down to OSU v Michigan. I know Bob Ufer will be watching. We were at the 1979 Indiana game. For one year, we had season tickets at the 50 yard line maybe 20 rows up.
Saw every one of them. Remember every one. Even though, technically, Michigan would have beaten ND without the Catch, I remember 4th down and commercial break and time out and like 15 years of delay for that play, and as soon as Grbac went back I said, "NO! Not a pass! What are you and idiot?!??!" Grbac to Fire for it. He's going for it all... A DIVING CATCH FOR A TOUCHDOWN! HOLY COW! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? My head still hurts from where it hit the ceiling. THAT is my #1 play of all times in the Big House.
I can’t believe they didn’t have Lloyd’s first win against Virginia in 1995, coming back from a 17-0 hole to win on a Mercury Hayes catch in the corner as time expired.
Love the choices but top five should be Howard punt return, Woodson punt return, Carter catch vs Indiana in '79, Howard diving catch vs ND, Edwards catch vs Sparty, and a bonus six, Manningham catch vs PSU.
Woodson't touchdown was hands down most electrifying moment. So much was at stake, and it meant: game, Heisman, National Championship (we figured beating WSU was a forgone conclusion). I'd like to know who it was that threw that last great block to eliminate the final potential blocker.
These are all excellent. But my favorite Wolverine moment of all time is still Leroy Hoard's big run late in the 1989 Rose Bowl against USC. Blue was ahead by 1 point late in the game, and the O-line gave Hoard a big hole to run through. Hoard broke a big one to put the Wolverines in scoring position. It was as glorious a play as you will ever see from a Michigan team.
top five Manningham to seal the win. Howard notre dame. Anthony Carter vs indiana. woodson kick return. Howard kick return. - as it happened I recall woodson doing it and hoping he did a heisman pose like howard, but then thinking maybe not as no defensive player ever won before.
App blocking the field goal at the end of the '07 season opener has gotta be honorable mention. All due respect to UM, but that was the greatest upset in college football history!
I tend to agree. "Greatest moments" doesn't always mean in favor of the home team. Even UM fans have to agree, as painful as it is, that that win was remarkable.
