I can't tell you how much I have learned from your video's. My 3 hp Brigg's was built in Feb 1987, very similar. Thanks a bunch!

I think they stopped using that starter ratchet design around 2000 or so. It's funny, the 1995 5HP Briggs on our rototiller has the newer starter pawl and cup design, and the 1998 10HP Briggs on our generator uses the old starter ratchet design. I found using ATF for lubricant on the shaft and really soaking the felt pad and lubing the inside where the shaft rides well works the best. It lasts for several years until the cooling fins need cleaned out again. Also I use ATF on the recoil springs and it works great for that, too.

I need to put a new spring in, we'll give the ATF a try!!☺

It seems to go a real long time before gumming up or going away. Unlike when using motor oil for the same application, that gums up rather quickly LOL

You made me spit my Coors Light at 16:44 into the video LMAO......... My buddy years ago made a spring type retainer frame that bolted on to his riding mower for small tanks like that........ He would put pea gravel in the tank with a lil diesel and had me ride around and cut some grass..... That my friend is part of being an apprentice in a lawn mower shop back in the late 70's...... I enjoyed every minute of it also..... NOBODY liked cutting grass... I did though.... Especially on the new Simplicity mowers we were selling......... That pea gravel what the snitz for cleaning those old rusty tanks out ........... A while back I had to take the tank off of a 52 SUPER A Farmall and clean it..... A piece of chain 3 feet long and a lil diesel and it was spotless..... And no leaks thank God ... Looking forward to part 3 Mon Ami ~!~!

Great update! I think Briggs stopped making that kind of recoil at least for their lawn mowers in the 80's. I know my late 80's snapper has that same system, but the 93 Toro has some starter paws that come out and turn a cup on the flywheel.

I'm working on a 2 HP 1960 Elgin (Sears) outboard and it uses the same ball-bearing starter system. The newer stuff works well enough to outlast most of the mowers they make these days, but it's got plastic pawls instead of ball-bearings. That plastic seems to out-gas a lot faster than metal. :>) Thanks Roadking.

I don't see why they phased out this clutches. On those modern starter cup setups, one accidental small pull on the rope and it scrapes the cup loudly

Putting some water in the tank with the nuts may speed up the process. Thinking of the wiggling rusty pliers / hinges / nuts and bolts etc under running water trick. By far the best way to free up rusty parts. Don't use lubricant till after the rinsing process

I think those ears are larger because they had different bolting positions for different packages. That being said, the other two, the normal ones, are indeed beefier.

I've got a 3 hp almost identical to this one, cept mine didnt cone with a shroud, my local small engine shop had an original briggs shroud from the 80's sitting in the back, so I dont know what year it is, but its older and has points. Is there a way to convert it to the ignition you have? Is there a module, or is it just the coil itself like some of the Tecumseh motors? Thanks, love your vids!
@805ROADKING
@805ROADKING 6 лет назад
You can change the coil or you can get a module on Ebay for about $12!! Search "Universal ignition module" or Oregon 33-053 on Ebay!! They work very well, I've used them before!!☺
@MVP11489
@MVP11489 6 лет назад
805ROADKING cool, I wasnt sure if they would bolt on, awesome. Like 10 years ago I used some of those modules, and they would only last about 5 minutes before they burned out. They must have gotten a lot better since then, I may give it a shot again. Thanks buddy! ☺

Also a lot of people will disagree with points and condenser I think points and condenser is a better system they’re easier to service and not as complicated not saying that it’s very complicated nowadays but it can’t be the way they have things set up with their plastic carburetors that are junk

Oh yes ,those ratchet one-way pull drives have been on Briggs engines forever. I can remember back when I was a young teenager (many decades ago) disassembling them and cleaning and making them work again. We didn't have the money to take anything to any repair man. So I learned to do everything for myself. Pretty simplistic design. Why would they need to change it...

Hey ROADKING,...that little fiber plug,...how about calling it a piece of 'felt' ? Hahaha! Now I have a question for you,...why did 'they' use 'screws' to hold the carb. onto the tank instead of hex head bolts? Nope, not a trick question,...I'm guessing, as the screws are holding a carb. made from potmetal or even plastic, to a sheet metal gas tank, that they didn't want you to over torque them and strip them out. Whaddya think? By the way,..that is one cool little 'trouble light' you have there, so tell us, where'd you buy it?

I hate to burst your bubble buddy but we live in a throwaway Society I maintain and repair vintage stereo equipment and all this stuff that they make nowadays is made to run for a while and then be thrown away and buy all new just like the engines that they make now for the little lawn mowers and riding mowers they're not made any good not like they were years ago it's another one of those ride it till it breaks and then throw it away that's very unfortunate years ago used to mean something when it said made in the USA and now have to stuff that's made anywhere it's junk it's not made to last anymore

Ball bearings are so cheap these days i don't even bother, i replace them and throw the old ones in my parts shaker. Also, i think the part is very complex, and the complexity lends itself to the fact that they wanted to keep rust out at any cost, in the end, the balls themselves did them in, there's only so much you can do, huh.
