Any of you 80's NFL fans remember how much paper from the stands ended up on the playing field in these days? Confetti, ticker tape, etc. The Orange Bowl, Mile High, Municipal Stadium...gave a lot of character to these places.
Die Hard Dolphins fan growing up in Ohio. Would have loved to watch a playoff game in the Orange Bowl. Shula on the sidelines with Don Stock holding a clipboard with a visor on and perfect tan, fans going wild and the unis & helmets were perfect back in the day.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I was the biggest Brown's fan in the mid 80's. This brought back so many great memories. I turned the video off when the Brown's were up 21-3, just to avoid the obvious pain.
I remember as a 12-year old watching this and being so disgusted I turned off the TV after it got to 21-3 and went to my room where I kept angrily muttering something along the lines of, "They're actually going to lose to the 8-8 Browns! This is actually going to happen!" over and over. And then when I finally turned the TV back on my mind was blown...
I am a torn between browns and dolphins fan in the late 20th century . one guy among others who is overlooked is all around running back, blocker and pass receiver Tony Nathan with the Dolphins .
This game showed the weakness in the dolphins defense that would keep them out of the playoffs for 4 straight years then back in playoffs in 1990 only to get blown out in buffalo for the rest of his coaching career Shula failed to field a defense worthy of his early 1970s championship defense
@@jonklein7130 Relied too much on Marino and failed to build a complete offense around him. Plus, Shula (RIP) was too loyal to his assistants, especially Olivadotti.
Good thing was Marino had quick strike capability and could score quickly. The bad thing is Marino's quick strike capability made the defense played and remained on the field longer.
I was there, was living in Sarasota at the time. I just had to go. I got 7 guys from work to roll down to Miami. Even though my Browns lost I will never forget that weekend!
The fact that Marino did what he did throwing to two guys that small 5ft 9in & 5ft-10in, only adds to his Greatness! I do not recall Danny EVER having a receiver that he could throw it up & let his guy just go up and get it! Number 13 did more, with less, than any QB in NFL history, he was simply amazing.
Miami fan from uk here. followed them avidly since 85. been to many home games but never the orange bowl. got this game on vhs we won against a v good browns team (the championship games etc). byner and mack were awesome. anyway we stuffed it the championship game vs NE. shite defence! love crickey and trump!!
I concur 80&90 NFL was classic thank you RU-vid for able to watch this classic game the great Don criqui a bob trumpy NBC was one of the best NFL coverage miss them days tremendously
I was 10 years old watching this game, and I was so confused as to why they were playing so poorly that first half. But I had a feeling they'd go into halftime, and come back in the 2nd half and win. I remember waking up the next week and saw rain hitting my window, and I knew we were in trouble vs the Patriots. The Dolphins used to fumble so much when they played in the rain, and I believe they fumbled like 4-5 times that game. I was devastated. I wanted to play the Bears again in the SB.
That was the last NFL season for the eleven-feathered peacock. Later in 1986, NBC reduced the peacock's feathers to six but added green to the colors and appear in this order: yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, and green. It is still used today.
Yep, the Browns suffered so many epic- gut-wrenching losses during those years, mostly due to Marty just being to damn conservative, great coach, but ALWAYS to tight a grip on the reins 🤷
@@johnyurick8785 Only to another Ol'Timer like me. Those of us that remember when the jerseys had sleeves, and stripes on the sleeves, not up on the shoulders (???) I can't even stand watching the games anymore... Everything thing is "in your face" and ugly. No class.
@sour airhead I don't know if all the teams had them. My team, the Forty Niners had a mesh shimmel that they wore in camp, but I don't think they wore them in any actual games, pre season, regular nor post season.
Thanks for commenting and the thumbs ups. Now I really want one!... Brown's road dark, in mesh with the late great Ernie Davis' #45, YEP, THAT'LL DO IT!
I've never seen Miami so focused and fired up. They look like gladiators coming out the gate. Just look how fired up they were during their player's intro 0:01
I was 12 at the time and thought that was cool, but I couldn't take the Browns seriously because of the 8-8 record and the fact they were trounced 37-10 by the Jets in their last game, as well as the fact Miami was 8-0 at home that season. Apparently the team didn't take the Browns seriously either the way they played at first.
In spite of their greatest stretch of football since the merger (1985-1989), both Marty and the Browns had about as brutal of playoff losses in a 3 year stretch (1985-1987) that only a handful of franchises have endured (particularly w/o any of them being Super Bowl losses). 1985: Lead 21-3 (Lost AFC Divisional Playoffs) 1986: The Drive (Lost AFC Championship) 1987: The Fumble (Lost AFC Championship)
@@kylebuckmaster6976 My Browns the Dawgs had 3 of the most heartbreaking losses in playoff history from 1985-87 SMH. If Don Rogers doesn't O'D in the summer of 1986 the Browns win at least 2 Lombard trophies he was that good 💯
55:40 mack's 5 yds per carry during regular season is impressive . Cleveland best rookie rushing : mack 1,074 better than Jim Brown's browns total 942 . BUT Jim Brown played the nfl official regular season at that time of 12 games whereas Mack a 16 game regular season . Brown had a significantly better yds per carry his rookie year than Mack . It's a pet peeve of mine, i know, these types of comparisons that are out of context and the record keepers seemingly never taking into consideration the differences and details . This is but one example regarding many sports records . sigh, never mind ... oh btw, the infamous, despicable and frightening since circa 1995 OJ Simpson is the only one of the 7 or 8 running backs in the over 2000 yd club, to do it in 14 games . the rest in 16 games
Even though he had that famous interception, Don Rogers actually changed the momentum of the game in Miami's favor with that personal foul around the 1:22:30 mark.
@@nbk4dv9 Yea that's kind of what I think. Even though I'm a dolphin fan, for the time it was a borderline call. Nowadays, penalty and fine - no brainer.
Only the third (and final) appearance by the Browns in the Orange Bowl-- two of which were playoff games. The teams hadn't even met since 1979 when this game took place.
Miami punter Reggie Roby puts so much hang time into a punt as soon as he kicks , you can walk to the corner 711, buy a slurpee and hot dog, walk back and the punt returner has just caught it .
xD hah! so true! I was always amazed to see him kick. Ray Guy also got serious hang time as well......Ray Guy is in the Hall Of Fame and thankfully, is still with us. Roby passed away way too young and he's still not in the HOF, why that is? I have no clue whatsoever....but it's a travesty.
I’m still depressed about how they lost the championship game. How?! They might not have beaten the bears again that season but they wouldn’t have been whooped 46-10. Agree with other post about this the last decent dolphins team of the 80s. And they should’ve won it all....
@Harry Diaz memories fade i only really remember the Davenport run from this game but google say JRS open august87 hope fins rebuild works out and some playoffs soon peace
Last ever Dolphin playoff win in the Orange Bowl where they won 10 and lost 4. Kosar’s only game at the Orange Bowl where it counted - Cleveland played at Miami in 1986 preseason game (Browns won 17-10).
Thank goodness for that Miami defense and that running game that scored multiple TD's. But the defense did not allow a point in the last 26+ minutes of the game and did not allow even a field goal attempt at the end of the game.
Mumford we all know you're a troll, no denying it. You're on ever Marino video on youtube bashing the guy lmao. The dolphins were trash that year, Dan dragged that mediocre team to the brink of greatness. Phins only made the playoffs because of Marino aka the greatest passer in NFL history. Miami defense gave up 245 yards on the ground and were out-rushed by over 150 yards. It's the only game in playoff history where a QB won against a team that outrushed them by that many yards. Get a life Marino hater
For the most part, Cleveland did what they had to do defensively in containing Clayton and Duper. The problem for the Browns was, once Miami adjusted to defending the running game against Byner and Mack better, play action passes and audibles would have worked effectively against the Dolphins going forward. The Browns were too one dimensional. But that would change the next few years under OC Lindy Infante. It almost seemed too good to be true that the Browns that year were so close to the AFC Title game. Can't take anything away from Miami's running game as they scored the clutch TDs when needed as well as a big day from Tony Nathan.
Don Criqiu is "Mr Miami" to me. Dolphins....Canes....Orange Bowl games. Seems like he called every big SoFla game in the 80s Great announcer , even better with Trumpy.
I love the 80s NFL shoe brand diversity. Nike, Adidas, Puma, Pony, Mizuno, Convere, Spot-Bilt. Nowadays every player in the league wears the same Nikes 🤢🤮🤮
A little FYI Both Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy also called the 1985 Orange Bowl on NBC featuring the unbeaten Penn State vs Oklahoma sooners whose coach was Barry Switzer for the national championship
On this same day was Tom Landry's final playoff game vs the LA Rams. I feel, even though the Dolphins prevailed here, you were witnessing the moment Shula entered into the winter of his career. The game moved beyond both Shula and Landry, two archetypes from which the NFL's cast was molded. I would also point out the devastating hit by Bud Brown on Brian Brennan (36:40). Today, an obvious flag is thrown, maybe an ejection. The hit was followed by the sage words from Dr. Don Criqui having just completed a concussion protocol from the broadcast booth. This was also the same season where we saw some magic on Monday night when the Dolphins beat the Bears in the Orange Bowl, their only loss of the season. If Miami beats New England the following week, I believe the Bears would still prevail in the rematch but I'd say Miami would score more than a Tony Franklin field goal. I would've also bet all the money in my wallet then that Dan Marino would at the very least play in another Super Bowl. You would've won about $8.
Great comment...1985 was indeed a changing of the guard in the NFL...numerous examples: 1. 1985 was the 20th consecutive winning season for the Cowboys, during which time they made the postseason a whopping 18 times, only missing the playoffs in 1974 and 1984...they wouldn't make the playoffs again until 1991, by which time Jimmy Johnson and the Triplets were running things... 2. The Raiders 19 year run of success, which lasted from 1967-85, in which they played in four Super Bowls, with three different coaches, three diiferent quarterbacks, and three league MVPs...the Raiders wouldn't make the postseason again until 1990... 3. The Steelers had their first losing season since 1971, the year before Franco Harris joined the team...Chuck Noll would have only one more postseason appearance, in 1989... 4.1986 was the first season since 1965, that didn't feature the Cowboys, Raiders, Vikings, Dolphins, or Steelers in the postseason...
Talk about the tale of Two Halfs? The Browns could do no wrong in the First half, and nothing went right in the second half. Poor coaching on the Browns for not throwing the ball a little more in the second half to keep the offense balanced. If I remember correctly I think Bernie had just turned 20 years old during this season. A lot of responsibility for such a young man, what a great effort on the young Browns team regardless. Byner sure ran hard, he is one of the most Underrated running backs of all time !
Unfortunately, this was Schottenheimer's M.O. Deviate completely to what was working in the game and go to a completely conservative approach on both sides of the ball. It's why he never went to a Super Bowl. Don't get me wrong, he was a fantastic head coach and a defensive whiz....but when the pressure was on.....he just tried "not to lose" instead of keeping his foot on the gas.
Cousineau with a broken wrist -“we don’t know he wants to get back in the game, but they can’t find a cast to fit” 😂 Also, Nat Moore was soooo underrated.
Every time I see Danny play the QB position, especially up to his injury in 93, I can't help but wonder aloud, how in the world did the Dolphins organization fail to put a team together that could win a Superbowl? I still believe Marino to be The G.O.A.T. & it's just WRONG that he doesn't have ATLEAST 1 Ring. What a shame SMH
@@1USACitizen192 If you don't understand that football is the ultimate TEAM sport, then there surely are better things for me to do 🤷🏻♂️ If ya don't believe me, go ask Payton Manning & nearly every other Quarterback of his era who was the GREATEST QB they ever saw, the majority of them will say Danny Marino was!
I call this game the Ron Davenport game. I watch it in a bar in my twenties. When we fell down 21-3 I had a horrible feeling inside. It seemed like Davenport came in fresh in the second half and provided a much needed spark. This may be the greatest playoff win for the Dolphins since the Super Bowl against Minnesota. Because they were down 3 tds to a team with a good QB and great ball control RBs. Miami better win a Superbowl before I die I only got a couple decades left if I'm lucky
Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy were so much better than Marv Albert and that doofus John Brodie. Two of the more underrated games of the 80's were called by them...this game and the Marathon at the Lake the following year. Say what you will about the mid-80's Browns...they weren't boring.
U see how good that defense was man smh u had 4 future hall of famers for sure With Clay Matthews Don Rogers Handford Dixon and Frank Minniefield if Rogers doesn't o'd that summer of 1986 and possibly Chip Banks the Dawgs were gr8 man damn the birth of the Dawgs was the secondary in 1984
Criqui and Trumpy! Criqui and John Brodie was my favorite too. Cleveland had some talent , Chip Banks, Don Rogers, Golic, Clay Matthews, Minnifield and Dixon. Love those brown uniforms. The orange bowl was great to watch games.
If Browns wore there white uniform they would have won .On 90 degree day put brown shirt on then with white see how long you last Dolphins home field advantage.
@@W0LF3Y_IS_CRaZyy I was 4 going on 5 in March then didn't know it of course then but as I grew up of course we learned light colors in the heat and dark clothes in the cold. I realize Miami having home field decided there were going with there home whites with orange and green stripes and colors
The Dolphins had their best defenses when Coached by Bill Arnsparger , 1970 - 1975 his no name 53 defenses averaged 10 points a game .After SB - 8 he left , 1976 he returned to form the Killers Bs back in Post season 1978 - 79,- 1981 - 1985 after SB - 17 he left again for good by 1986- 89 Dolphins would miss him only making post seasons in 1990 , 92, 94, 95 , Shula Retires
If the Brown's would have won the game they would have played the Patriots at home the following week probably would have won that game and then would have lost big time to the bears
Your absolutely right Kam, if Cleveland could have pulled the upset in Miami the whole dynamic would have changed! The Browns would have hosted the Patriots and if they beat them then lose to the bears in the Superbowl, but it would have changed the history of the league and the browns and who knows what would have happened after that? Maybe the Browns win it all next year and there's no drive maybe Modell gets a new stadium and the browns never leave. Who knows but it's fun to think about and debate.
@@joshua462 as a 4 yr old going on 5 in March of 1986 All I know is I would have been barking like the Dawgs & the Dawg Pound had we played Da Bears in the Super Bowl like always as a kid since it started day 1 1985 lol
Man I know it still hurts u to this day I was a infant Browns fan when he passed away I was 5 when he died it hurt the Browns aka Dawg defense from being truly legendary like the Steel Curtain and Bears and Ravens 2000 defenses and a couple Super Bowl titles he was that gr8. Much respect to U and your family bruh
If there was any good that came from the Browns’ loss to the Dolphins, they exposed the Dolphins weakness of 1985 and that was their defense and would prove to be the Dolphins’ undoing against the Patriots in the AFC Championship the following week.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Don't ever joke at anyone's death man by the grace of God it's not US. @@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Sad it took Don Rogers and Len Bias o'ding to get drug testing started smh I was a little kid that summer starting kindergarten but remember well the just say no chants
Kellen Winslow, Ozzie Newsome, Dave Casper, best NFL tight ends ever. 80,s Dolphins were the San Diego Chokers of 79-82. Browns were always a dissapointment going back to Brian Sipe,s interception in the end zone against the Raiders instead of winning with a field goal. 1980 div playoffs. Oh well! As for disappointments nobody tops the Buffalo Bills. 4 Superbowls in a row. 0-4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Browns played a heck of a lot better than any 8-8 team would have. Marino didn't fire on all cylinders in the first half. The Browns gave the Dolphins a run for their money in the first half but collapsed in the second half.
2:01:19 2 thousand-yard rushers on the team, only the 3rd time it had happened up to this time, and they run that play. Could have ran it up the middle, twice if necessary. This is the "lost heartache" of Browns playoff history, it gets lost in the shuffle to Red Right 88, the drive, and the fumble. But this would have been THE biggest upset in a Divisional playoff game at that time. Miami dodged a bullet but it was kind of a bad omen to what would happen the following week.
Dolphins had some big wins down the stretch winning seven straight, wins over division rivals jets and pats and there most historic win Monday night against the previously unbeatable bears but there glaring weakness show its ugly head in the playoffs when it matters most...dolphins were able to overcome it in this game but couldn't the following week against pats It's to bad cause dolphins and bears match-up would have been epic to see in superbowl
