1985 Nissan 500 | Wellington Street Race | Wellington NZ 

I was just chatting with an old mate who is still in touch with Robbie Fancevic (we all come from the same small town) and I was waxing lyrical about watching this race live from on top of one of the containers on the edge of the track. It is still the most exciting race I have ever watched - seeing the Volvo bash its way to the front of a top class field in the first 20 laps. I remember looking at the car afterwards and every panel had been bashed in (it was a tough track to overtake on). I had no idea this footage existed. It’s just as exciting as I remembered.

That Ford Falcon XE is quite spectacular looking. Very Cosworth. The turbo lag on the Volvo is absolutely hilarious.

Just the actual surroundings the Dock area I presume, and the pit stops etc make it feel like a bunch of blokes suddenly decided to put on a race on quiet Sunday morning using whatever was to hand. I went to Auckland around 86 and even on impulse did a bungee jump off a crane somewhere similar and it feels exactly like this. Wonderful. Big thanks to the wonderful Kiwis.

As a grizzled fan (and marshal) of the IOM TT this appealed to me greatly. Thanks for posting and transferring this old VHS tape to RU-vid for posterity 🙂

It's wonderful to be able to see this in 2022. It would have been almost impossible to even know that it had taken place if you lived in the UK. I do. You might have seen a very small mention of the result, perhaps a list, in one of the motorsports magazines, but I doubt even that

Walkinshaws luck improved later in the year when he took 3 big V12 jaguar xjs to Bathurst & 2 of them finishing 1st & 3rd he finished 3rd but his team ruled Bathurst that weekend
