You have more information on this truck in a single 14 minute video than most of the Toyota forums. This needs to be linked and stickied to all of them, excellent resource.

I have an 1984 pristine condition 22R, I found it in California and bought it from a guy that only used it for camping, not abused, no rust, and with a little bit of love I got to restore it, and I simply love it!! I own a 2019 BMW X5 and a 1982 Mercedes 300D, but the car that I enjoy the most driving is my faithful 22R, I use it as a daily driver, it came with A/C, so it has everything I need! I'm planning on lift the suspension but at the same time I want to keep it stock. Amazing video and congratulations on that beautiful truck! Cheers from Guatemala :)

I hate to but my '92 Toyota 4x4 pickup is going to the scrapyard. The rust on mine is worse than even what he showed here, the torsion bars broke off the frame, the frame is crumbled to dust, the body is rusted to dust, and to top it off the engine threw a rod and you can put your fist through the block.

RyanKC when I bought mine in 2010 (85 extra cab) it had 308k on it. Some didn't take care of the coolant system and between the head and block it got a cavity which mixed my oil and coolant together. Still drove home. Got a rebuilt motor and she's going strong again.

When I was 7 years old my dad took me to the Toyota dealership and told me to pick out a new pick up truck. I picked out a beautiful blue Toyota 4 by 4 with a giant silver stripe going down the side. My dad drove that pick up for 4 years before trading up to a 1990 Toyota 4 runner SR5. It was like trading up to A Cadillac or Lexis compared to that bouncy blue 4 by 4.

Nice wrap on the pickup. I'm in eastern Australia, have had a 1987 YN58R Hilux Xtra Cab since 2013. 2WD 2.2 4Y with super-rare Aisin-Warner 03-71 3p + OD automatic. 4Y is a common forklift engine. Absolutely runs out of puff at 4000rpm, but that's not a bad thing. These low-revving, madly-overbuilt engines are known to run >500,000km without rebuild in the Hilux. Mine is running on LPG Autogas, which can't wash oil off the cylinder walls, so engines last much longer. Nearly all taxis in Aus run on LPG. There are million-km examples of 4Ys on Autogas. Mine is just getting started with 240,000km (149,000mi). Rust is just not a thing in Australia provided you don't live near the coast. Worthwhile mods include removing the clutch fan and using a 16 inch electric fan instead. When you only have 91hp to start with, a 15hp parasitic loss at 3500rpm is noticeable in acceleration and fuel consumption. As you note, just keep replacing the wear parts and you will have one of these literally forever.

Bought a 1980 pickup from a buddy for only $200. It had the 20R swapped for the 22R. It sat for 20years & started up the second I got it home. Although it’s so slow haha. I had it floored & it was only going 53mph. Love this truck & I have no problem with getting everywhere slower than I’m used to

Is it the automatic version? My dad's hilux-based kijang can go 150km/h (95mph) on 5th gear. It has the 2L-II which only makes 85hp. The automatic version is really rare where I live, i heard that they're total crap acceleration wise

Great video reminded me of my appreciation of my Toyotas. I own/ed three toyota trucks : 1985 extracab 2wd 22r carbed 5spd, 1984 extracab 1ton long box 2wd 22re mpfi auto (swapped to over 5spd), and 1992 4runner 3.0v6 auto. My 85 22r got my help with new timingchain, shave down head, and straight dual exhaust. I didn't expect those mods to do much really.. Wow did that improve torque and acceleration! And it sounded awesome. It seriously felt like 140 hp after those three mods. Would pull >105mph on level road.

I had an 82 hi lux with a 7 foot bed. To this day that was my favorite truck of all the trucks I have owned. I miss the manual shifting transfer case and manual locking hubs with a straight axle and 410 gears. That little truck was a warrior that would take me anywhere and get me back without any troubles. One thing I did was buy an aftermarket luxury high back buckets with a fold down console. Best investment to cushion the stuff ride.

As a kid I remember my father owning like 20 of these trucks and sold them for good money and i remember the last one that rolled out our drive way back in 2013 it was a 4x4 1984 Pickup with a bad engine and sadly had to let it go if only I could've told my dad to change his mind but i was younger and didnt have much interest and my dad knew by memory how to fix that engine up part by part but I remember these Gems greatly even a 1981 4x4 pickup with the 20R engine that was his baby until he had to sell it due to financial problems. Hard to see them here in Texas but when I see one me and my father would get morbidly excited to see them.

I put Nerfs all around. t was a tank. It was so lite I pulled out 4x4's from the mud. I loved my truck!!! It was red. Back to red. I bought a 1985 SR5 Xtracab new in 1985. There was fuel injection on the 1984 SR5, as well but the head of the 22RE engine was redesigned in 1985, giving it about 10 h.p. more than the 1984 model. I had the rare metallic sky blue color, which was a $399.00 special paint appearance package. I still have my original window sticker from 1985, detailing all of the options, and prices. No, I don't have it anymore, I sold it decades ago. Great vlog, about a high-demand classic truck. It is actually about the 3rd generation of the truck from the mid 70's.

My grandfather bought an '84 2wd DLX Xtra Cab automatic slightly used in 1986. It was by far his favorite vehicle; the one he called his 'old friend.' He generally bought and kept newer vehicles but he kept this one and an '91(with only about 30K on the clock) he used at a second home out of state. It was the source of many a childhood memory. When he passed away last year the truck went to me(an '80s Toyota enthusiast who mostly lusted after their sports cars like the Supra and Celica Alltrac), a little worse for wear but still running strong with only 135K on the clock. I've rebuilt the A/C system, carb, and several other minor things and it's served me beautifully as a daily driver and parts/engine hauler for my other projects. I can't think of a better all-round truck.

I bought an 85 Toyota Xtra Cab 2WD with the 4 cyl carb, 5 speed transmission and tachometer. Had it 6 years, probably 125,000 miles on it, traded it off for a Camby, should had held on to it, it had 4 more owners, including my Toyota Mechanic that knew the last owner. Finally snapped the frame carrying a full load of firewood with 460,000 miles on it. Original engine, still didn't burn any oil. Rust was the only thing that could kill them as long as you kept the oil & filter changed, lubed and did basic maintenance on them. Had an 91, 95, and currently daily driving an 2000 Tacoma with 231,000+ miles up here in Western Upstate New York State, it's rusty but still passed NYS Inspection this year. Still runs great. I've owned it 12 years, it came out of Virginia so that's helped it survive the NYS Salt so far. When my 95 wouldn't pass NYS Inspection anymore due to rotted frame, my mechanic gave me $500 for it and it got a new life as a dirt packer truck at the track he raced 3/4 midgets until the frame finally broke in half 7 years later! Love these small Toyota pickups, 2wd works fine on the roads in winter up here as long as you put good snow tires and 200 pounds of weight over the rear axle and snow tires. Never gotten stuck yet! I've had great luck with my 4 Toyota Hilux/Tacoma trucks and 3 Toyota cars. Been driving them since 1983. 40 years of happy driving Toyotas!

It has never broken down, in 25 years and 280,000KMs. In 2019, my father and I supercharged the 3RZ with the TRD/Eaton MP62 supercharger and had a Haltech Elite 550 fitted, on a totally unopened engine with routine maintenance, and otherwise original driveline. It's still going strong, with a recent re-tune with larger injectors, resulting in a 50% increase in power and torque compared to the stock figures.

Nice! These hilux bakkies, we refer to as bakkies not pickups ;-) were sold in SA till 1998. I still own my 85 d/cab(replaced the engine with a 22R ) but still totally original. Also own a 1979 and 1998 single cabs, still running. Awesome video on one of the best ever built

I had a 85 2 wheel drive pick up. It was a lemon- kept getting rear axle seal leaks which ruined the rear brakes. I traded it in for a 4x4 1992 Toyota pickup. After the differential was overhauled and still was extremely loud, I traded it in for a 2019 Tacoma 2 wheel drive. I had around 230,000 miles on the 92 pickup. I still miss it.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 3 года назад
John axle seal leaks can be caused by a clogged breather. When the diff gets warm and fluid/air needs to expand, a plugged breather will send the fluid through the axle seal. My 94 land cruiser had that problem.

HAHA classic " I told my wife it was hauling heavy items for our new home" . Nice breakdown bro I hope you keep the vehicle forever. I own a 04 tacoma 2.7L, but since the prices have been climbing I just picked up a 1999 3.4L Tacoma as well, although i really wanted a 1985-93 pickup truck!

Keeping it forever is the plan! I bought an 80 Series Land Cruiser so I wouldn't have to sell this and buy a bigger truck to haul the kids. I love this '85! that '99 must be nice with the 3.4, thats a great engine.

Bought a 4Runner in 1984 for 12k had for 13 years 198k miles, upgrades were Rancho 3” lift, 4:88 gears and Detroit locker rear, base model carb, no radio or electronics, great wheeler but under powered if hauling or towing. Awesome off road. Would love to see simple 4-wheeler with today’s tech.

@@6thGearGarage yeah they are pretty rare trucks to find, either a Hardbody or Pathfinder will be a good choice, although the Pathfinder does do a little better off road because of the factory suspension setup. Good luck to you I hope you do find a clean low mile one, would be sweet content on your channel.👍🏼

I guess I'm getting old. But learned to drive and had limited use of this truck when I was a teen. My dad had acquired it from my grandpa. The trucks name was heartburn. And man was it fun... Bmx, snow and my first fun with a girlfriend. Will always love it. One time I superglued little diamonds all over the dash. My dad was not impressed and made me peel them off. Ruining the dash. Lol. I later owned a lifted 95 with 36 inch Mickey Thompsons that would kill Any hill and snow.

Man, what a great review! U really know your stuff. I have a 91 4runner myself, which is pretty neat condition, but planning to use por15 or something else to undercoat it.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 4 года назад
POR15 is good stuff, I used it on my frame repair in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5DY-SfQZyZU.html The only thing I don't like about it is that it's not UV resistant. So over time it fades from shiny gloss black to a dull black and I've had it start to peel in some spots. There are other UV resistant rust inhibitors on the market though, if you;re worried about that.
