The crank rod for this bike was discontinued. I found the last one for sale in the U.S. and then had it professionally rebuilt which took more than 2 weeks. That's why this bike took so long to rebuild. Sorry for the long wait on this one! Hopefully you guys enjoy the video!

3:00 I'd really recommend buying a seal puller. They are dirt cheap and you would have had that seal out in seconds without risking damage to the casing mating surfaces. They work good on fork seals too, not just in casings.

As I said before, these little bikes are especially interesting because I had some good times with my son on one. Best decision I ever made. That was many years ago when parts were plentiful. Shame about your parts problems with this one. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy your weekend.

Keep doing what you're doing man. Keep learning and bringing these older machines back to life. Love to see it. You remind me of myself and my good friend. We ran a shop a long while back (90s through 00s) and I've had the pleasure of working on about 99% of the bikes you've done on your channel... and many others. Watching your vids brings back great memories. I still wrench and ride, but the wrenching part is only maintenance now on the few machines I own... and I guess vicariously through channels like yours.

So much for bedding the rings in before giving it the beans! Still, it's good to see it rebuilt rather than broken for parts.

Had a flashback when you turned into the drive at the end of the test ride coming off the road. I was about 11 at the time and did pretty much the same thing on my 1978 YZ 80 and lost the front end on the blacktop driveway with fresh sealer on it. Good lesson about knobbies on slick surfaces.

@@lorollinls yes they will! I took my Yamaha Warrior, the LT 80 and and one of my best friends up to the farm a couple years ago. He is 6'2" tall, and the image of him on that little quad reminds me of Artie Johnson, on Laugh In, on that tricycle. He was flying across the property, hitting burms and flying through the air, his knees almost in his face, screaming like a little girl. I'd give anything now to have had a video of that. Just remembering it has me in the floor in stitches.

I would like to have an old 80 yz but that last connecting rod and no cranks really puts me off. Being old it might last the rest of my days but would be fun. Looked like over 70 on the highway and more than 60 down the field, enough to bust your butt real good. It needed the rear suspension hardened up for your weight.

In 1999, I bought a brand new kx 80, I was 17, my little buddy got 1 of these to ride with me. The sound of that 3ngine brings back alot of memories. My 99 kx 80 was smooth and fast, but the Yz 80 was nasty! The power band kicks in so fast, it felt so weird after riding the 99 kx. Which was a little faster on top end I thi k I got the kx 80 to go about 60mph if I remember correctly. Cool video, thanks for Sharing!

Sounds like clutch slipping from 3rd and up. Great video anyways. Epoxi is a risky decision for such an important role and the original cause that killed the engine. It will tend to fail over time. A mechanical interference solution would be better. Keep up the 2t resurrection!

I always use gasket maker or case sealant on the intake gaskets on both sides on all 2 strokes, because with out it, it will leak cause it to run lean.. or leaner than you thought. If you leak down test the motor it will tell you if your intake, cases, cylinder to cases, and head are leaking/ not holding the pressure it needs to lube bottom of the crank case

Get yourself a seal puller, makes that job MUCH easier. Also, it kills me that you don't clean up those parts before putting new parts in. I would be worried about dirt getting into the new parts. It is just so much nicer to work with clean parts. Put that case in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes and that frozen bearing will fall into place.

I had that exact bike as a kid. It sounds like your clutch is slipping, fix that up and it will pull harder. Also that exhaust leak where the pipe meets the head was a common problem, I can see yours leaking from the smoke when you were in the garage, that will take a little power away too. There were some copper crush gaskets that would seal that up for a while but they will eventually wear through, and I'm not sure where you would buy them these days. High temp sealant might work for a while.

It is like you are riding your first 2 stroke. I've ridden a lot (75-100) of 2 stroke bikes both on and off road and the YZ80 was close to the most impressive for powerband. The Maico 490 was also a scary ass arm jerker on powerband but the Yamaha V4 RZV500R is just completely insane and wants to rip your hands off the hand grips.
