I was coming off of a 2-week illness on this night, and I've always believed the Giants healed me with this win. Simms' celebration of the second TD pass may have been my favorite moment ever as a Giant fan. Seriously.
It's insane that I can't find the full game. I don't understand why. I'd say it's the ghost of Bill Walsh, but he'd probably want to get rid of the divisional game.
@@wesmartino64 I'm with you on that. One of the best MNF games ever, one of the best games in this NFC rivalry, Frank Gifford and Al Michaels with the call. This game should be all over the place.
I hate to be that guy but for the 1986 season, MNF’s booth was only Frank and Al. Dan didn’t come onboard until the 1987 season. Anyways, you’re right about those three guys being the best.
The turning point for the game was Bavaro carrying those niners for a ride. They scored 21 unanswered points after that effort and determination. Defense started making plays, and everyone got tougher.
@@timlevis3630 Bill Belichick was defensive coordinator of the Giants from 1985 to 1990. He was 3-0 against the 49ers in the playoffs in that timespan.
In fact, Bill Parcells beat both Hall Of Fame Super Bowl-winning coaches Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs who combined for five of six Super Bowl titles between the two winningest head coaches in the NFL in the 1980's. That's a testament of why the NFC was the better Conference in the '80s.
@@thfzn3130 I couldn’t understand the scheduling formula, it was such a disgrace, Atl & the nyg met only once during the entire 90s despite being in the same conf, ‘02 realignment made scheduling well understood due to all divisions having 4 teams each in contrast to previous era where unevenness among the divisions threw things off
@@mesocorny4366Miami and Denver Marino/Elway only played 2 times! Once in 85 and then in 98! Unbelievable! Not to mention the weird scheduling that would have none division opponents play twice?
Giants @ 49ers I - Giants Stadium - 1986 Giants @ 49ers II - Candlestick Park - 1990 Giants @ 49ers III - Candlestick Park - 2002 Giants @ 49ers IV - Candlestick Park - 2011 - Final Playoff Matchup Ever from inside "The Stick"
for years, I've always felt that Stacy Robinson catch at 16:35 was a TD he was still juggling the ball when the defender touched him, he didn't gain possession until he was in the end zone. I guess it doesn't matter, perhaps window dressing but Phil Simms finished with 199 TD passes. That would have been # 200!
Usually it works the opposite way. Back in the old days there were hundreds of awarded touchdowns that would have been marked short with slow-motion instant replay.
If Daniel Jones or Eli Manning threw those interceptions Phil Simms did leasing to 10 SF points, the entire NY media, blogosphere and social media fandom would be calling for him to be benched and demanding the Giants start planning to trade up and draft whatever college phenom was leading the Heisman race.
Incorrect. Phil Simms led the 1990 Giants to a 10-0 start and was well on the way to having one of his best seasons in his career until he broke his foot during the first game vs. Buffalo.
@@classicsports5057 On the greatest offensive play of Super Bowl 25, Jeff Hostetler threw about eight yards short of the line to gain, and Mark Ingram broke half a dozen tackles to reach the first down marker and preserve what at the time became the longest drive in Super Bowl history. The best play Hostetler made in that game was not fumbled when he was being tackled for a safety, and for which he received considerable praise, because that's how the low the bar had been set for Hostetler after his stints relieving the injured Simms in 88 & 89, and the final games of 90. Jeff Hostetler is the only Giants QB in history to start & win a Super Bowl but not the MVP award.
There is so refreshing to watch. No ridiculous statistics or graphics on the screen. None of the players dancing around after every play. And also i'm a giants fan so not much to be happy about these days 😅
Why is it. A choke? How about giving the opponent some credit. Giants earned this win with guts and talent. Nothing was handed to them. I suppose the Niners choked again when they faced the Giants in the playoffs, same season. Giants 49 Niners 3. Yeah I guess they choked that day too. Giants had nothing to do with it.
@@kevinmcdonald6477 Both can be true in that the 49ers had a lead, and didn't capitalize after halftime, and the Giants also took advantage. It doesn't have to be one or the other like you assumed I was insinuating. 49ers didn't choke later in the playoffs, because they weren't in that game at any point really.
@@astrostar49 Cool. Believe me, I know how many times the Giants took it on the chin from the Niners as well as. Some big wins but just as many if not more losses to them. I didn't like the Niners but I recognize how great they were. For 2 teams on opposite coasts they had a great rivalry.
Beating the Giants was the best and worst thing the 49ers could have done to themselves. The 49ers would be shut out at Giants Stadium. Thank You, San Francisco. 2, 4, 6, 8, who do I appreciate, Niners, Niners, Niners!
