As a packers fan, even tho we lost that was one of the most amazing and greatest games I’ve ever watched between Rodgers and Warner. I also love love LOVE irony. The way that game ended was to me the greatest irony in nfl history. In a game in offensive fireworks where neither offense could be slowed down, that the defense is what won the game for the cardinals at the end. I still get shivers thinking about it. As a packers fan yes it was heartbreaking, as a football fan? IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!
SB XIII w Bradshaw and Staubach was not only a classic duel and for the championship of that season as well as team of the 70s, it turned out that game may have been for the best dynasty of all time, or close to it.
Bernie Kosar would never be recognized by all the so-called geniuses who comment on the NFL as an excellent professional QB for a time, but he was very young and he masterfully guided Cleveland those years. The Browns lost 3/3 AFC title games to Cleveland in the 80s, and it’s a shame that the only name we still talk about from then is Elway. If BK and the Browns had managed to win just one of those two in 1986 and 1987, and they really should’ve won that second one, we NFL fans would regard Bernie in a better way than we do now...but just because they lost all those games to Denver doesn’t mean Bernie should be forgotten. Guy is a Competitor. Was a nice backup for Troy Aikman in Dallas, after his Cleveland days were over too...
I saw O'Brien vs. Marino on TV as it happened as a 8 year old Jets fan and remember thinking then I'm not sure if I'll ever see anything as amazing like that again. Here almost 35 years later great to see it's legendary status still holds up. Contrary to popular belief not all Jets memories all bad ones.
I like that they have Young vs. Kelly from 1992 on the list.. and it's where it belongs at 10. BUT.. what should've been at least mentioned for 10 seconds.. was that the 2 QB's also had the greatest QB duel of all time in the USFL. Opening day 1985.. Kelly's Houston Gamblers at Young's Los Angeles Express in the L.A. Coliseum. Unfortunately for the USFL and their half-a$$ TV deal, the game wasn't televised live by ESPN or ABC. Kelly threw for 574 yards which is still the most in a single game of any pro football league. People can rip on the USFL all they want, that's fine.. but it had a good number of quality players who still speak highly of it to this day. They just didn't like the cheap owners. Some things never change.
I miss the old USFL. Hall of famers came out of that league as well as several pro bowlers. Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Reggie White, Hershel Walker, Mo Carthon, Brad & Bart Oats, Anthony Carter, Sam Mills, Ricky Sanders, Bobby Herbert, Irv Eatman, Kelvin Bryant, to name several.
@@Rockhound6165 I heard some stat one time (can't find it) that 40 or 50 USFL players made at least one NFL Pro Bowl between 1986 and 1991. It might've actually been more. I think they said it at the end of the 30 for 30 movie about the USFL.
Seeing Ed Too Tall Jones at 30:47 triggered lots of fun memories. Dallas and Pittsburgh had two of the most physical defenses of the time. Loved watching those games.
1984 LA Coliseum- Houston Gamblers vs the LA Express. Jim Kelly vs Steve Young! What great QB duel!! But, since that was the USFL, a NFL Films Top 10, would not include that game! But, if you saw that game, it was awesome!!
greatest game no one ever saw...they played NJ game on TV because it was Doug Flutie debut. Kelly threw for 574 yard 5 TD in a comeback win. Yes, if it were not an NFL list I too would have it way up there toward the top.
How could you not at least give honorable mention to the Epic in Miami between the Dolphins and the then San Diego Chargers? Both Dan Fouts and Don Strock, the latter off the bench no less, each threw for over 400 yards in the game. Of course that was one of the craziest games ever, with the hook and lateral by the Dolphins, blown field goals, including not one but two blocked kicks, and an incredible effort by Kellen Winslow for the victorious Chargers. Unforgettable to say the least.
It still gets me that their explanation of why Jim Kelly vs. Steve Young was only at #10 was because it ended on a missed field goal, or as they put it: "Because the outcome wasn't decided by a QB." Then they go down the list and: #6 (Dickey-Theismann) Ends on a missed field goal. #5 (Elway-Kosar) Ends on a running back fumble. #3 (Bradshaw-Staubach) Ends on a failed onside kick. #2 (Warner-Rodgers) Ends on a sack-fumble returned for a TD by the defense.
Exactly. Their ranking logic was always so inconsistent. And they’d poijt that out themselves, they’d include clips of everybody talking about how it doesn’t make sense. Whatever. I miss these a lot
No, I wouldn't put Mahomes/Goff on an updated version of this list and here's why: As great of a duel as that was, let's remind ourselves that three of the scores in that game came off of Defensive TD's. To be a great QB duel, it's gotta be two QB's consistently beating the defenses throughout the entire game, that's how it has to be to me.
@Harry Engel I agree with you, personally I would rate it second behind only one other Monday Night game, that being the Monday Night Miracle between the Jets and the Dolphins from 2000.
Jackie Smith’s dropped pass did not cause Dallas to lose SB 13. There was 2:46 left in the THIRD quarter when Smith dropped Staubach’s pass. The Cowboys still got 3 points out of the drive with over a quarter left to play. Steelers put up another 14 points after that & would’ve tried to put up more instead of burning clock if Smith had caught the pass.
Harry Engel Thatnks that’ is a fun fact. It makes sense that they would want him back. He was obviously good enough to slip off the line & get into the end zone without being covered. 😀
R. William Comm Thank you for bringing that up. EVERY time that highlight is played.. and the radio call from Verne Lundquist is heard.. the impression is given that the pass would've won the game late or something, or "lost" it because of the drop. It was only 21-17 after Dallas made that FG with plenty of time left.
Chris Swanson Exactly. It’s amazing how even sports media twists our sacred memories. Randy White jokingly said many times that in a way he was glad Smith got so much attention for dropping that pass because White had made so many mistakes in that game that he felt like Smith took all of the heat. Although I was a Steelers fan, Dallas was so classy that you had to admire them. Another memory twisted by media: the moniker “America’s Team” was never used until after this game when it was the title of the NFL Films Cowboys highlight reel for the 1978 season when they needed a title that was optimistic instead sounding in the Super Bowl defeat. It fit well even though it was their last Super Bowl until the end of the 1992 season. 😀
Man. I think a duel from the last two years might need to be in here. And on top of that, Super Bowl 52 is now on this list at #2. There's alot of great things that bave happened in the NFL recently.
37:20 Am I just seeing things, or is Michael Adams grabbing onto Rodgers’ face mask there? I’ve seen that play dozens of times and even watched this top 10 video before, and I can’t believe I’ve never noticed that until now.
Bledsoe could've been an all time great but he slowly became a statue in the pocket. Seeing this it's no wonder Brady became so obsessed with flexibility
Hey Isaac, do you think you could possibly upload "Top 10 Greatest Hands" next. It's a list that I haven't seen in a while, but it's one of my favorite Top 10 episodes.
This list needs an update! Superbowl LII _ Nick Foles vs Tom Brady. 879 total yards passing; 7TDs - 1INT. Brady's best game of his career with 505 yards himself with 3TDs -0INT. Eagles had 164yds Rushing and 374yds Passing (538yds total) Patriots had 113yds Rushing and 505yds Passing (619yds total!) Final Score 41-33. (Eagles) Only ONE punt in the game - Eagles' Donnie Jones 41 yarder.
Remember this was the FIRST Super Bowl that followed the Mel Blount Rule. Certainly had a huge effect on passing careers like Bradshaw, Staubavh, Fouts, Plunkett, Sipe, Jawirski and others
Fascinating detail from Packers/Redskins 1983: The game combined for 1000 yards of offense and 95 points. Green Bay only had the ball for a little over 20 minutes and still scored 47 points. Unreal.
Gb vs Det. Jan 1, 2012. Flynn vs Stafford. 45-41. Flynn with TD pass with 1:10 left in game to put it away, this one definitely should've been on the list like what 🤯.... Flynn: 31-44/480 passing yards/6 passing tds/8 different receivers to catch a pass/4 different receivers to catch a td 1 wr over 150 yards, 2 more over 80 yards, and 2 more over 50 yards Top receiver (Jordy): 9 catches/162 yards/3 tds Stafford: 36-59/520 passing yards/5 tds/ 6 different receivers to catch a pass/all had 4+ catches/4 different receivers with a td/1 wr with 240 yards 🤯, 1 more over 110, 1 more over 60, and 1 with 45 Top receiver (Megatron): 11 catches/244 yards/1 TD #2 receiver (pettigrew): 7 catches/116 yards Easily one of the top 10 QB duels of all time only knock is there was no stakes other than the lions getting the 6 seed and having to play the saints, instead of getting the 5 seed and playing the giants. But other than like no real stakes, statistically one of the greatest games ever played, they combined for 11 tds, and 1000 yards passing 🤯🥵 no reason this shouldn't be on the list.
2:20 San Francisco's post-Joe Montana vs. Buffalo game. 6:41 The 2013 Broncos-Cowboys game. 10:09 The 1994 Patriots-Dolphins season opener. 14:45 Ah yes, the 4th & 2 game. 18:15 Lynn Dickey upsets the Hogs. 22:29 The Fumble! 25:31 The 1972 rematch of Super Bowl III. 29:46 Super Bowl XIII 34:41 The 2009 Wild Card Shootout! 39:51 The 1986 Dolphins-Jets match.
I remember where Ineas diring the Dickenson Theismann duel...I had just come home from trick or treating to watch my beloved Redskins play. Also, dont forget, that was one of only THREE Redskins losses that season
@Harry Engel If they could put Brady Quinn and Lynn Dickey (granted, he was an amazing deep passer) on this list, then yeah, you allow Scott Mitchell to be on here.
OBrien kept heating Marino and Eason taking the Patriots to the 85 Super Bowl made the Jets and Pars think that maybe it was ok that they passed on Marino. That idea didn't last long
I never really seen Namath but Obrian came from a school close to me he was a decent qb jets were just a non factor. We were shocked he got drafted coming from a division 2 school
Some people don't like Marino vs Ken O'Brien. I think if you included Quinn vs Stafford on the list its the same thing. If a fan casually can remember that game, and its not like a playoff game guaranteed to be showcased for the NFL world to see, its safe to say it stood the test of time. The fact that it does decades later and we're even debating where it resides on the list means its an all timer.
I remember when Ray Wersching got cut/retired and the 49ers preferred Mike Cofer, who had a bigger leg... the problem was, he had none of Wersching’s accuracy. It was like if Bill Parcells had cut Matt Bahr in favor of, say, Mike Vamderjagt 😂, which would’ve cost NYG the 1990-91 NFC title game, and we’d have seen Buffalo trying to stop SF from 3-peating in that Super Bowl...you go from a deadly-accurate but short-range kicker to a guy with a huge leg who sometimes doesn’t even get the ball NEAR the uprights lol Cofer was the one weakness those 49ers teams possessed. EDIT: This is regarding #10 on the list.p, the first QB matchup shown...
Curious if the Kelly Bills faced the Young Niners in the SB what the outcome would’ve been. They had a great regular season game. Would the Bills folded in the SB? They would’ve probably been blown out as usual.
Honestly Dickey vs Theismann should be replaced by the another game that season: Plunkett vs Theismann at RFK where Theismann threw for 417 yards and Plunkett threw for 372 yards and the game came down to the wire with a touchdown pass to Joe Washington winning it 37-35.
I know they replaced the "best game nobody watched" (Brady Quinn vs Matthew Stafford in 2009) with Peyton Manning vs Tony Romo. Another game they easily could've replaced that with is The Matt Flynn Game. (Which also involved Stafford.) Scoring a million points is one thing, but that game was the ESSENCE of the entire 2011 season. Hall of Famer after Hall of Famer was having a seminal year, and then to close it out, even a rando can throw for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns (and need every one of them.)
