Saint & Greavsie preview the 1986 FA Cup Final, with Ian St John at Anfield and Melwood with the Liverpool players and Jimmy Greaves playing snooker against Gary Lineker of Everton.
This is taken from a recent ITV4 "Best of Saint & Greavsie" broadcast, but if anyone has more of the ITV build-up to the final (possible on an old VHS tape) please let me know. I have the BBC coverage, but it would be great to see more of the ITV build-up.

The F.A.Cup Final was such a massive deal back then. It seemed like the whole country came to a standstill with both main channels covering the event; the only time that ever happened was on General Election day or a royal wedding. Great memories.

It was the only scheduled live TV club game of the season. The only other times that clubs would be shown live were if the FA or League Cup Final went to a replay (the League Cup Final itself kicked-off at 3pm on a Saturday along with normal League fixtures so wasn’t shown live), or a British team reached the European Cup or Cup-Winners Cup Finals (though not, I think, the two-legged UEFA Cup Final).

The formation of the Premier League and Champions League along with constant live games killed the thrill of cup final day. It was like christmas day when you were a kid.

Absolutely agree have never agreed with the semi finals being played at Wembley. The magic of the cup final was about getting to Wembley. For the final now you are at Wembley before the final. The feeling can't be the same the tv coverage was brilliant tarby celebrity bar. Saint and jimmy brilliant days

Those were the days when the F.A Cup was everything, the coverage from midday onwards and the crap team songs but unfortunately Sky TV and Capitalism has ruined that tradition.

The BBC pre-match coverage featured Lineker playing Mark Lawrenson at snooker. I think that the Everton striker won that.

You're right, he did. But Lawrenson won their duel in the final itself, when Lineker was through and Lawrenson stopped him with a perfect recovery tackle!

I used to love cup final day when I was a kid. The coverage being on all day really built the match up and made it feel special. 1992 was my favourite just because it was the only time Liverpool won it in my childhood. I was nearly 16 by the time they won it again.

I really like the way Greaves and Saint John used to go about the show; a very distinctive style compared to the more trimmed and professional one you have today. They were football people doing a TV show, rather than TV professionals doing a show about football.

These two were big idols of mine and very nice men too. Greavsie the greatest of ALL TIME and St one great player and gentlemen. I was so lucky to read both auto biographies and they’re amazing, the very best I’ve read along with Frank McClintock’s,brilliant.

I saw a brilliant interview with Greavsie a few years back where he looks back on his career. It was quite sombre and he never once smiled or joked. I wonder was his humour masking a depressive persona. He almost seemed to regard life as a farce.

Thanks. This is from a "best of Saint & Greavsie" episode and is all the was shown from the 86 final. I assume you meant more of the build up to that match, and this is all I have of the ITV build up. If you meant the S&G best of, someone posted a link to the full episode of that elsewhere in the comments.

Cheers Dave! This footage is so weird to me. I’m 34, and as much as I still enjoy the FA Cup final, some of the lads I go the match with are touching 60 and they told me how much of a huge deal it used to be. Some of the comments to this video also confirm this. My first FA Cup final memory was Owen vs Arsenal in 2001. Thankfully too young to remember ‘96, but I don’t remember any … pomp? That the word? I just don’t remember it being the huge, huge deal it apparently used to be.

I think there was a time when the league title and FA Cup were of equal importance, and it was a massive shame for Liverpool fans that the club had not won the cup before 1965. By the 80s, when I was growing up, the league was more important but the FA Cup was still massive.

The premier league became worth so much money that it was unfortunately inevitable that the FA cup would gradually drop in any chairman’s priority. As great as it still is, financially it’s worth less than finishing 17th. Maybe if they gave it a champions league spot instead of europa it would put it back on the map.
