1986 IMSA GTP at Charlotte

If I had to guess, I’ve watched the 1986 Charlotte IMSA GTP race at least 20 times.
The sight of the world’s most diverse and cutting-edge prototypes, deep in NASCAR country, navigating Charlotte’s awkward layout still holds its fascination for me. And in another nod to the different times when GTP thrived, the early domination by Klaus Ludwig in his four-cylinder turbo Ford Probe was thrilling to behold.
No Balance of Performance. No cries of unfair advantages. And no surprise when GTP engines, wound beyond their limits, exploded in spectacular fashion.
Ludwig buried his foot in the throttle and crushed the Porsche 962s, Buicks, Corvettes, Jaguars, and all manner of prototypes…while asking those four little cylinders to stay below their melting point. Surviving a three-hour race like the 500km Charlotte Grand Prix was anything but a guarantee, and if you’re a fan of drama, mystery waited around each corner for the leader and those in pursuit of the rapid German. Although Ludwig was the early star of the event, he wasn't necessarily the one spraying champagne at the end...
The event made use of the North Carolinian track’s sweeping oval and rudimentary road course which, despite its shortcomings, also made for great television. Check out the grandstands, as well. Fans flocked to see these caged animals unleashed in an unnatural environment.
And on the very real grounds of safety, a chicane comprised of tire bales was installed halfway down the back straight, and while it certainly looks strange, slowing GTP cars that weighed half of the average stock car and made power in the 900-1000hp range was a necessity.
With the recent repaving and modernization of Charlotte’s infield road course in mind, NASCAR fans will get a look at its original state, free of safety measures and other conveniences we’ve come to expect today.
Spend some time with Ken Squier, Bill Adam, and Dave Despain-checking in from the old TBS broadcast hut-and turn up the volume for the wicked-fast meeting between IMSA GTP cars and Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 18, 1986.

My father worked at CMS during most of the 1980's, and I saw every one of the Camel GT events in person. They were all good racing to watch. This track just made for interesting racing and, unlike most tracks, you could see the entire event from the grandstands. If anyone ever puts up the 1982-1984 races, they were just as good, better even. If anyone ever questioned the skills of Danny Ongais, watch his drive in 1982. He had nearly been killed at Indy the previous year. If anyone has never seen that Indy crash, look it up. How he did not die is a miracle. A year later and still recovering, he showed up at this event, jumped in a Lola T600, and put on an absolute clinic in his first race after the serious Indy crash. But the best race of the group was easily the race in either 1983 or 1984. My memory can't tell me exactly which year, but anyone that has seen it will know what I am talking about. The Jaguar was fast, real fast. But they kept getting onto trouble and knocking the nose bodywork off of the car. The Jag would get way behind in the pits getting a new nose, then storm back into contention, only to lose another front end. The effort by the Jaguar team was epic, but ultimately fell short. Still, it made for what was easily the best road race I have ever seen. I have no idea if the races before 1985 were televised like this, as I was watching live. If they were aired, someone has to have the video somewhere. Great racing if it ever sees the light of day again.

I used to run track days at rovals in the late-80's/early-90's. Pocono, MIS, Atlanta, and Charlotte. Charlotte was my favorite because it had the nicest flow to the infield course, but the transition from the infield to the NASCAR banking was very abrupt, and I rapidly learned to take it at a shallow angle to minimize shock to my car's suspension. Many years later, I finally got to run the Daytona road course, and I really liked that place. I have looked at a video of the revised Charlotte roval, and it doesn't look as fun as the old one; there are a couple of slow turns in the infield that will probably not be loved by the NASCAR drivers.

"No Balance of Performance." Well, at 32:30 the announcer says: "This weight addition on the Porsches is evening the competition out."
@DanArnets1492
@DanArnets1492 6 лет назад
I much rather see simple ballast or air restriction than the complex impossible-to-understand bullshit that is communism applied to racing, also known as BoP. Ballast does not hurt you 100%, the weight can be put down in a way that makes the car more balanced. An air restrictor can make your car softer, easier to handle, not always superharmful. A lot of ballasted and/or air-restricted racecars have won races in close-fought competition. BoP is a lot worse. BoP is what gave us the travesty that was Ford GT's "FAKE WIN" at Le Mans after sandbagging all year long.
@DanArnets1492
@DanArnets1492 6 лет назад
Just ballast or just a restrictor is not as damaging as BoP. With BoP they fuck a car in like 5 different ways at once, they change a lot of the car at once. With ballast or the air restrictor it is not as damaging, it can help you in some other way.

How is winning the 24 hrs. of Daytona sandbagging?
@jkk20
@jkk20 4 года назад
@@DanArnets1492 YEAH bop is communism applied to racing.. heck any form of handicaping is communism in racing... just won a race??? that's too bad because you've gained some weight. car makes too much power and defeats the ballast??? how about you now breathe from a straw(restrictor) i mean come on.. its welfare for the lower common denominator. but yeah,i agree that the ford gt's were sandbagging to make their pr coup work. and it is BS but gt3 has to be the worst BOP class in the world... bentleys winning races.... in what universe is this suposed to happen?!?!?!?
@jkk20
@jkk20 4 года назад
@@DDS029 do you mean the one in 2016??? i thought the ford gt's did miserable at their opening race in daytona. iirc it was not until the race before lemans that they performed well. thus probably not receiving enough bop adjustments to make it fair,but then again i hate BoP... it saps the fun out of racing or the fairness,so who's to say ford did earn their victory or not.

There is a picture online of two-time NASCAR champion Joe Weatherly driving a British Lister in an early pro sports car race there. I am so glad in 2021 when watching races. The commentators have been stopped from yapping to much. During the 80's I stopped watching racing on TV because your not allowed to think for yourself as the race is happening. Just got so annoyed by all the yapping. Racing became a platform for commentators to promote their yapping skills. No one can focus on the sounds of the racing engine sounds. Too much talking. Ruined it for me for years. They talk to people like we are deaf dumb and blind. Dam they pissed me off. Like a little kid jumping up and down in front of the television while your trying to watch TV. This was not about racing. This was about promoting your talking skills. Great race though. Went and watched Ludwig race in Portland. Enjoyed that. Got to actually hear the cars and focus on the race. Rather than have commentators yapping and talking and yapping and talking. Shut the heck up.
