Michael Winchester, OU's punter in this game was shot and killed a few years ago by a gunman in OKC. His son James was playing for the KC Chiefs. He was a very good man. Thank you for showing his plays too, even if they were just punts. Mike was a four year Letterman at OU.

I hate Penn State I think Joe Paterno was a child molester as well I don't think Sandusky was the only one involved in that they should start calling themselves chomo state I think they should have gotten the death penalty and their football program should have been abolished SMU got a death penalty for a lot less than what chomo State done SMU wasn't molesting children you can say what you want to but I think Joe Paterno was involved in it as well if not he was doing some major covering up

I can remember watching this game like it was yesterday, both defenses played extremely well, with a lot of hard hitting tackles. I still have my OU Orange Bowl Championship T-shirt hanging in the closet that I bought after the game. I sure do miss those unrelenting strong hard hitting defenses that OU used to have during Barry Switzer's era, you've gotta have a good defense to win a championship.

Thanks for posting all these great games from the past in condensed form...well done! As a 73 year old college football fanatic these games really make you miss the way football was played in the past. Wishbone vs RPO as a fan/viewer there is no comparison. The tackling is better, OU's speed and precision running the bone is spectacular and despite being a perv and child molester,Sandusky could really scheme the he'll out of stopping it. I was surprised OU was so good at kicking field goals since they never had to to it during the regular season. Lots of terrific future NFL players on both sides. Was the Boz overrated or what?

I’ve been watching your vids for the past 2 weeks. Read Brian Bosworth’s bio The Boz a few weeks ago and been watching his old games. These vids are a blessing when you need a blast from the past. Ive seen others do these edits but not like yours. You capture the color guy more. There’s some videos where it’s just the play-by-play guy, but you try to squeeze in the color when you can, in the bigger moments. Too bad you can’t program espn classic. I bet their viewership would rise if you took over the schedule and used you’re edits. I write fiction and understand how difficult editing can be.

John Shaffer had to be the most frustrating Penn State QB ever to watch. It's amazing he got a D-1 scholarship at all. Slow, unathletic, can't run, and a very inaccurate passer. A prototypical "game manager" QB rather than one who could win a game for his team. Most of his passes sailed over the receivers' heads. If the other team was as good or better and got a lead, it was pretty much over because he couldn't lead a comeback. He had a gaudy win-loss record, mostly because he had a very talented supporting cast. The title team the next year beat Miami in spite of him, not because of him. He was to blame the most for this Orange Bowl loss. A blown opportunity for back-to-back national championships.

Sooners were actually ranked #3. Miami who had beat Oklahoma early in the year was ranked #2. The National Championship was Penn St.'s to win or lose. In the Sugar Bowl that night, #8 Tennessee, the Sugar Vols, blew out Vinny Testaverde and Miami in a rout 35-7. The Sooners took care of the overrated Nittany Lions and took home the title, which in those days was a coronation by the nations sportswriters!! The next year this Penn St team upset the overrated Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl 14-10 which led to the BCS era of pairing the top two teams in a title game. Looking forward to a playoff which will enrich all of college football and give the players a chance to win it on the field rather than in the minds of sportswriters.

In very early description of Jamelle Holloway being named starting quarterback for Oklahoma, Don Criqui said Holloway replaced the starter who suffered a fractured leg. Gosh, the starter was Troy Aikman. NFL Hall of Fame and 3 Super Bowl rings. It’s fascinating to not hear Aikman name at all. Another indication of inability of great coaches like Switzer to really grasp talent level of players sometimes. Switzer however, did tell Aikman to transfer because Oklahoma was not going to passing game. Next stop for Aikman was UCLA....All-American...drafted No 1....rest is history.

Compare that game with very little passing to win Baker Mayfield played, wow what a difference the speed of the passing etc currently is much better those old games for boring, because all they did was run the ball. Penn States defense in '86 pretty much shut down Oklahoma, but they were able to win because of interceptions etc. I think Oklahoma is kind of Lucky to win that game and I went to school there but that's the truth. I liked the school I finished at better Oklahoma City University and I took graduate courses and all the professors in the business school and phds from Harvard and Wharton School, they're still currently ranked one of the best faculties in the business school in the country. I was glad I left Oklahoma, their business school was not a comparison to Oklahoma City universities Business School. Much higher class education in Oklahoma City University. OU played with three ineligible players. When Joe was told he said no matter they beat us fair and square

If that was the case, then the championship would have been taken away from them. Think straight.

No a UT fan but Tennessee was a far better team then either of these two. How many total turnovers in a Championship game????? Pathetic

It was about what resume at that point. Oklahoma and Penn State had been consistent winners for years while Tennessee hadn’t had a great team in over a decade.

Johnny Majors cost UT that season with 2 ties and a loss at Florida is what did them in for the title. I think in the UCLA game they had a 24-3 lead going into the 4th Qt and UCLA came back to tie, they should have easily coasted to victory in that one, Majors went ultra conservative running the ball up the middle and blew the game. The other tie was the Georgia Tech game, first game for Daryl Dickie as starting QB, they simply were to conservative in that one.

Oklahoma used two illegal players and PSU should have been named National Champions.

Which players? I know a a few were banned a year later, notably Boz. But never heard about it for this game.

It matters not anymore because Joe Paterno refused to dishonor college football with a challenge to the victory by saying; "those players did not affect the outcome of the game." That was it. Today, the internet lists Oklahoma players who were suspended for every year except 1987 which has been omitted. One should note that late in 1987 Bosworth tested positive for steroids and by 1989 all hell had broken lose (heavy sanctions) at Oklahoma regarding recruiting violations.

@@robertkauffman8137 I think it matters. You made the accusation of a 36-year-old game. I know nothing of the 1985 season suspension (for the 1986 Orange Bowl for OU/PSU). I find no record -- and have looked some. And I have never heard of it before (not saying it isn't true). The 1986 season suspensions are very well documented (where Boz was suspended -- but this is not for the PSU/OU game). "Joe Paterno refused to dishonor college football" is rich though.
