Memories... I was at this game. Eighteen years old and Eric Ball was my boyfriend. My parents taped it and he got a kick out of watching his own exploits (as any kid would) when we (finally) got back to my parents' house that night. Still friends with a couple of other guys who played for UCLA that day 🙂.
This is the point. How would they like it if the rose bowl was held in big ten territory. You would have a lot of pac 12 fans complaining about that. If you want to make it fair have it in neutral territory.
While the Rose Bowl conferred some home field advantage to the PAC schools, in this era at least, the Big 10 teams were usually big and slow, with limited, predictable offenses, and no ability to play catch-up. PAC teams were faster speedy and more diversified offensively. No surprise a #13 beat a #3 by 17 points (and it could have been by a lot more).
could've played that at kinnick & ucla still would've won. see how ucla was faster 😂. 1986 ucla speed edge was as decisive as iowa's '24 superiority at LOS (both sides) over ucla rn. facts. '86 ucla had 3 guys from michigan, 1 from nj.
First New Year's I can remember watching the bowl games. I remember Eric Ball going off (he would eventually play with my uncle Ickey Woods in Cincinnati) and how large the TV audience was. Was the last New Year's DAY bowl game have over a 20 TV rating. Only the prime time 1987 Fiesta Bowl and the 2006 Rose Bowl (both #1 vs 2 for the national championship) would eclipse that number since.
One thing you could count on throughout the 1970's and '80's : a Big Ten loss in the Rose Bowl. You could set your watch by it. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The sky is blue. The grass is green. Cotton candy is pink. And the Big Ten will lose the Rose Bowl. 😊
@@johnnyb980 NFL stats for Ronnie Harmon: -582 catches for 6076 yds and 24 TDS -615 rushes for 2774 yds and 10 TDS -1992 Pro Bowl He was not a 1st round bust! He was one of the best NFL all-purpose backs in my lifetime. One also has to consider that Harmon played in a far more conservative era. He would have racked up far more yards if he had played in today’s NFL with all the wide open offenses
@@brenthachmann5655 What I have always found odd is that Harmon has never really addressed this. He’s been pretty quiet about it. If people in Iowa think he threw the game, why hasn’t he explained what happened? He can just say to all: “No, I didn’t throw the game.” Him being an Iowa legend, the people in that state would probably be receptive to such a statement. But he’s been quiet and I think that speaks volumes, no pun intended
Poor Haden Fry.Team of his life and they come out and play terrible.Would have had a good case for the Natty had they 🏆. Would have been a good year for a Playoff.Michigan may have won it
