In this video, I go through the steps of winterizing a boat with a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger acts in place of a radiator, intaking cool sea water, and exchanging the heat from the hot engine antifreeze. It must be drained before the freezup otherwise the exchanger can crack.

Out of all the videos I’ve watched I couldnt find this engine being winterized anywhere else. This is a simple and most effective way of doing it.

Just winterized following these instructions 🤞 Thanks for the video! Hard to find info about these engines. Our "new" boat has been nothing but headaches and moments of terror since getting it a few months ago, but it was nice to notch our first win tonight.

I had 2 Mercruise in/out drives.. 1 was a V8 305 Chevy 305. The other one a 4 cyl 250 Chevy engine. ..........

Yeah we have seen both of those engines come through the shop. They are good engines. The one in my boat is actually a Ford internally. But it has some GM Delco parts on it. I guess that it was a special engine made by Ford for Mercruiser at the time. Thanks again for watching!

Where is the fuel filter on this engine? I looked all over last fall while winterizing it and could not locate the fuel filter. I would like to change it this year. Thanks!

Haha. Yeah, I was not happy when I dropped that screwdriver. Luckily I had the magnet with me there just in case. Unfortunately I did not use the boat at all this summer. I was so busy working. I had gotten it ready in the spring but never had the chance to go out. So I winterized it again. We are still setting up at the new place. I am kinda part time now so I have been doing alot of stuff here around the house rather than working as many hours. Thanks for watching!

I just bought this motor and noticed the reservoir looked like it had just water in it. Im assuming there should be coolant in there and i should not let it freeze.

There should be coolant in part of it. The heat exchanger (long tube I was working on) is basically the radiator. Using cool lake water to exchange the heat with the antifreeze circulating around the block. The front half of the heat exchange should have antifreeze.

Question. Do the cap go back in the reservoir before putting the antifreeze in? Or do it stay out?

Cap goes back in. It's just to drain any water out of the system that's in there.

I sprayed a full can of fogger in my carb and it wouldnt die.

That happens. You have to basically kill it with the key when it starts to sputter.

Oil fogging the engine for storage is for 2 stroke outboards.....it's for the lower crankshaft bearing.....you're only coating the spark plugs with that crap. Those water muffs can blow the seals in the out-drive if the engine isn't running....use low pressure until the engine starts......the seals are designed to seal under suction.....which brings us to...DRAIN the oil out of the out-drive before freezing temps.....if the seals have been damaged, and there is water in the drive gear oil, it will split it like a bomb exploded inside. Not necessary for I/O 4 strokes. The way it smoked when it fired, I'm pretty sure there was plenty of residual oil for the cylinders. DO NOT trim the drive up during storage.....guaranteed splits in the rubber boots.......trim the drive DOWN ALWAYS when not in use....replacing the boots is a royal pain in the you know where.........
