I was at the playoff game at the Meadowlands in Jan 1987. When Jim Burt sacked Montana. The hit was so hard it sounded like a cannon. LT picked off the pass and took it all the way for a touchdown. Bavaro caught a touchdown pass from Phil Simms. Carl Banks had one the best runs in the history of the game. Dare I posit that he was even better than hall of famer Harry Carson and the NFL MVP all-world LT during that stretch of games. He utterly dominated tightends. They could not get off the line of scrimmage let alone block him. How did he only make one pro bowl? There was another excellent linebacker named Chip Banks in the AFC. He played for Cleveland and then the Colts. There is a new book by Gerry Myers about the 86' club. Many are struggling today. Some did very well. Parcells is estimated to have lent about 4 million dollars to his ex-players. He most likely was never paid back. But he is fine with it according to the book. He said he asked so much of his players and they were like sons to him.
I can't tell you how awesome it is that these broadcasts are preserved here and not lost to history. I was born in 84 so I didn't get to experience this era of football but I love the old style of football and broadcasting so much. What a blessing to be able to enjoy this history.
I remember this game. It was such a statement game to beat that Raiders team in the coliseum. Such a magical year for Giant football fans. That was one tough Raider Defense.
as much as i love the product on the field now for the NFL, I can't help but feel a certain love for the game of the 80s. It was when passing first truly took off, with guys like Fouts, Marino, Elway, Montana and Kelly. But you still had great, productive running backs like Dickerson, Roger Craig, Walter Payton and others. The balance between the run and the pass, I feel, was at it's peak in the 80s. In terms of yardage you could argue the 60s were more balanced, but in terms of plays called in the 80s, it's something like 50.6 percent of all plays being passing plays and 49.3 percent of all plays being running plays, which is extremely close. Not to mention the differences in offenses as well, you had teams like the Bears who were contempt to run the ball heavily throughout the decade, while teams like the 49ers found a perfect balance between run and pass, and teams like the 1984 Dolphins favored the pass heavily.
Yes and it's different to see the quarterback line up behind the center and drop back several steps to pass...Now everything is in the shot gun formation
Thanks for posting!! My father had Giants season tickets from 85 till I took them over in the early 2000’s we went to or watched every Giants game as a family game great memories.
I was scanning to see if anyone else was gonna make this comment. Crazy here in 1986 he's in his 2nd year and almost 2 decades later he was still an active player as he played so long cause he was regarded as a long snapping specialist but boy did his career ever end badly and the little he played for the Giants will always be badly remembered from that infamous 2003 playoff game against SF.
As an east coaster I have always been fascinated by the Coliseum and separately, the Rose Bowl. I finally got to see a game a couple of years ago (Rams) in person. What a cool place. The Rose Bowl is next!

It's so great to be able to watch these again and get taken back to 86. I'm a Vikings fan, but L.T. and this Giants team were a blast to watch. I was at the game that year when the Vikings blew a coverage on a 4th and 17 to give the Giants a first down and an eventual game winning boot.
thoroughly enjoyed this gm! thank you mr ken gelman for posting another gem! a 6-0 gm for a large chunk of the gm but yet still so much drama! REAL football!.. superb job editing! spot on! loved all the highlights of other gms and even the commercials u saved..nice touch! ..loved this giants team..that 86 team was a special team and i'd take parcells over belichick any day! gotta kick out of how happy parcells was at the end..burt, banks, L.T., reasons, simms, lil joe morris, and bavarro carrying 4 players 5 yards, etc! they were SO special it makes u weep! madden and summerall is just icying on the cake! I saw it live but who can remember? THANK YOU!
BTW, thanks for the upload. This was back when whenever both the 49ers and Raiders happened to be on either NBC or CBS, we'd get the 49ers game, so in Fresno where I'm from, I vividly remember being disappointed to see the Saints/49ers on CBS after watching Denver smoke the Eagles on NBC. The stuff you remember from your childhood lol.
I don't think there's ever been another team in history that started their season playing both Super Bowl participants and a conference championship game participant in the first three weeks like the Raiders did in 1986. Just a brutal start to the year. After this, they'd win 8 of 9 games, including a win over the 4th and final conference championship game participant, Cleveland.
After the last play , look at Bill Parcells as he celebrates jumping on Jim burt and ripping his helmet off...the look on Bert's face Is like W.T.F.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA
That Raiders team was not great in 1986, but you still see how much talent they had. This was a great win for the GIANTS to go out to LA and beat them. Very interesting seeing LT go up against Marcus Allen while they were both in their prime.
WOOHOO, it exists! A game where CBS did in fact use the old 'CBS Sports presents..............The National Football League' theme before switching to Pots and Pans the next week. Note that this year their legendary college football theme would debut at the Super Bowl
Now let’s say that the college football theme was to be the new theme for the NFL. My guess is that they would have used this theme and intro for the entire season, with the exception of Super Bowl XXI, when the new theme would have been introduced.
Just as Allen was heating up after a big run and trying to keep his 100 yard streak alive, this play at 1:48:37 changed the Raiders fortunes. Probably for the next decade as he really was never the same after this.
Thanks so much for all of these! Much appreciated, sir! By any chance, do you happen to have the 1986 NFC Championship Game with the Redskins? Having a hard time locating that one, for some reason. Thanks again!
Probably my most asked question on the channel...I've tried to upload it about 20 times and every time YT takes it down over copyright infringement claims. Something about that particular broadcast sets off an alarm. So unfortunately, I won't be posting it. Not from a lack of trying though!
@@kengelman1011 That sucks! I've even tried BUYING it, but for some reason no one seems to have it. Oh well, thanks for all the games. Don't mean to sound unappreciative.
@@johnlaird4003 all good! Yeah, I'm not sure why that game is such a hot button for copyright claims but it's been strange figuring out what is and isn't. I've posted a lot of games and a few still get flagged for random reasons. Your guess is as good as mine as to why.
Just so you remember the names Marshall Martin and Burt were the lineman makes any coach look fantastic and the coach was you guessed it the man that took the Patriots to 8 super bowls unfortunately lost to the Giants twice hahaha. I'm an old man I watched ya tittle a few in between them losers saw the miracle in the meadowlands too many times always against the eagles Lord knows I hate the eagles. But like I said yay titles franta Phil Simms and Eli Manning brought us all the glory but it was always our defense!!!!!
Awesome upload man Thank you so much even though I’m a die-hard Raiders fan and positive that games like this took years off my life🤦🏻♂️ I still love watching them..question I have for you if you ever get around to it is why does it seem like Raiders games are so hard to come by on YT? Am I imagining things or is there something to it? I know a lot of their home games especially in the LA years would be blacked out often but even with said it just they’re way underrepresented on YT..thanks again man this was great👍🏼
27:25. It look like they are sending in the play to Plunkett, like the do for Wilson, and not letting Plunkett call his own plays as he had always done before. What do you all think?
He was replaced by Raul Allegre I believe. It may have been right after this game. I forgot that they had multiple kickers that year until just a few minutes ago.
Holy moly, Trey Junkin was in this game as a tight end for the raiders. Giants fans know him well from 2002. I always felt bad that he was put in that position after being essentially retied that whole year.
I know what you're saying the raiders are the badass team and I'm a Giants fan has there ever been that many linebackers in lineman that good even considering 85 bears I don't think so
I never realized how terrible Phil Simms was as a quarterback. He had a good defense but that offense was terrible. If the offense would have been better LT would have had more rings.
I disagree. Phil was / is under-rated. The 86 Giants had many injuries in the skill position players, and Simms was playing with a sub-par, inconsistent receiver corps. Even at their best, the 80s Giants weren't known for having the best skill-position players (like Rice, Monk, etc.). And Phil had what Parcells would call "intangibles"--mental & physical toughness, resiliency, self-belief.
You obviously have no clue what you're talking about when it comes to Phil Simms. Guy was a good quarterback, and had a very solid career. He was a Super Bowl MVP, and later a Pro Bowl MVP at the end of his last season in the league at age 38.
Giants had a horrible receiving core. As you see the main offensive weapons where Tight end and running back. That was out of necessity. Simms worked with what he had as did the coaches. Which is why that year is all the sweeter looking back.
That LT Superman Tackle sent Junkin to the showers. Ole Joe Cooper went on to become a Pro Bowl Barrister. After week 3, you'd thought the NY Jets would win the Super Bowl.
