I was at this game at 16 yrs old with my mother and father. They are both gone now, but these (and many other) great memories will live on in me. I watched this with my sons, and passed on the story of this and other great Giant memories. Thanks for posting this.
This is going to sound strange, but do you have any Giants losses of this era? If so, would you be willing to post any? I know the general reaction would be "why would I post losses of my team"? As a fellow enthusiast of games from this era, I think it's really cool when someone is able to showcase the good times, and the bad times. It's just life as a sports fan in general. Not saying one should post even half wins and losses, but maybe just a few from notable games. Depends on the person of course. Just a thought to consider.
I’m not really a baseball fan, but the Mets captured the city’s attention that year. As did the Giants, it was definitely a fun year. I was 12 but remember it really well.
@@madrecka I hear you. The Niners had some great mnf games in the 80's as well. Remember that one when John Taylor had an all star wide receiver night against the Rams? Of course I'm sure you know he was also the one who caught the game winning touchdown from Montana against the Bengals in Super Bowl 23. Those were great times in the NFL. I miss those days.
@@ereztree Yep I miss them as well. The John Taylor game with SF on MNF was on 12/11/89 against the Rams and oh yes He caught the winning pass from Montana in SB 23 against Cincy. Great memories.
Imagine if they would of kept him on the roster in 90 along with Anderson and Hampton. Too bad he burned some bridges by holding out in 86 and then by being extremely vocal during the players strike of 87. They also just drafted Hampton, and the previous year drafted Louis Tillman at RB, so after having a mediocre season in 88 and then breaking his foot in 89, his contract made him expendable by 1990. It also didn't help that running backs seem to fall off a cliff after age 30, especially back then. Though there are a few exceptions...
I agree. In my opinion NFL players today are too good. Football today is too uninformed. There's something fun about watching football with a bit of sloppiness.
Could u imagine how much chaos would ensue if everybody woke up tomorrow and it was 1986 again but yet everyone is still aware of what's missing from 2021. We'd still have things like cars, grocery stores and electricity but with no internet, or cell phones which would mean no social media, online banking, Netflix, or uber or cash pay apps or sattelite tv...... man people would panic like a asteroid was headed for earth . Older people that grew up in that era could perhaps learn to deal with it cuz we know it's survivable and know people can still laugh and talk to eachothee, just face to face or over a rotary dial telephone hanging in the kitchen but people that's younger than the internet , it'll be apocalyptic
Big Al mentioned it in broadcast. It was The Watchman. Small, portable TV. The HOT electronic item for that year. Reception was variable, but I'll bet many had an earpiece in and were listening to Mets.
The 1986 New York Giants were one of the greatest experiences of my life. Thanks, Ken, and to all those who have posted complete games from that season. Hopefully one day all sixteen complete regular season games will be available. As for playoffs, divisional game vs. 49ers and of course XXI are available, but it's hard to believe that the NFC championship game isn't, so far.
@@steebb7404 Not 100% sure. My best guess: the NFL polices these videos in some form and for whatever reason this one keeps getting flagged for "copyright infringement." I've heard this from others trying to post the same game. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, TBH.
@@kengelman1011 I do find that baffling really. Must be something about that particular game and what's in it that causes it to be flagged for infringement. Indeed it doesn't make one bit a sense at all that all these other games can be but that one. I sure like to see that game when the Giants made their first run to their first Super Bowl by smothering the Redskins defensively.
The NFC East was ultra competitive during this time and especially in the 1980s. Joe Gibbs Redskins won Super Bowls in 82, 87, and 91. Bill Parcells Giants won Super Bowls in 86 and 90. Buddy Ryan's Eagles were playoff teams. The Cowboys made a few playoff appearances as well.
Big change from the 1970s, when it was mostly Cowboys and Redskins, with the Cardinals up there from 1974-1976, and the Eagles starting in 1978. The Cowboys' long stretch of prominence ended rather abruptly in November 1986. After this game, Dallas was in a 3-way tie with NY and Washington for first at 6-2. But Dallas lost to the Giants the following week, 17-14 , and after splitting two close games against the Raiders and Chargers, they lost their last 5 -- 4 of them by lopsided scores -- to finish 7-9, their first losing season since 1964. They wouldn't get back over .500 again until 1991, the year before their return to the Super Bowl in the Jimmy Johnson-Jerry Jones era.
John Re well it’s true that his body would definitely have taken a beating but I’m done doubting the greatness of Tom Brady. But, I still stand by the fact that the 92-93 cowboy teams would beat new England’s best teams. And that includes their 2007’ team. But as for Brady, he’d do very well in any era
@@RobertJohnson-mn3br yeah he is great but he wouldnt look like no pretty boy at 40 yrs old in the nfc in the 80s. The nfc took years off qbs lives especially the giants. Go ask joe montana. They sure shortened his career.
Red Sox vs Mets on at the same time. Big night in sports. Great important game was back seat to the World Series. I flicked back and forth watching the METS more and winning,
Not for those who live in Boston. Some Boston fans were probably watching what CBS was airing or the WSBK prime movie......if they were watching anything at all. I'm sure some Red Sox fans wouldn't watch Game 7 after what transpired two nights before.
It's interesting to contemplate what would've happened if Washington had won this game. They'd have tied the Giants at 13-3 in the NFC East. The top 3 tiebreakers would've been even -- split the season series, both 6-2 in the division and 10-2 in the conference. If Washington had won the decisive tiebreaker (whatever that was), the Giants would've been back where they were in 1985 -- hosting the wild card game (this time against the Rams) and then going to Chicago for the divisional. The Redskins would've hosted the 49ers as the 2 seed, and would've hosted the Giants if they'd met for the NFC Championship. It's not at all clear the Giants would've won in that venue, even though they did in the regular season.
John Manier John it’s a very interesting what if but I believe that Giants could’ve played on the moon in 86’, nobody was beating them, and I’m a huge cowboy fan. Dallas played them tough in 86, which looking back on is mind boggling. But Giants were clearly the best team in 86’. It’s the only year that they won the championship that they could claim that. Ooohhhh I’m sure Giant fans are going to be ready to lynch me but deep down they know I’m right
@@RobertJohnson-mn3br ....the Giants were damn good in 1990....as amateur of fact.....STATISTICALLY....the 1990 Giants were superior to the 1986 Giants. ILB Pepper Johnson was the best defender on that 1990 squad.
Absolutely. The were TV sets placed all over the sidelines and Wellington Mara had a Walkman pair of headphones installed in all of the players helmets so that they could listen to the radio broadcast of game 7.
The NFL as I remember was infuriated Game 7 of Red Sox-Mets was rained out on Sunday night, especially given it had stopped raining that Sunday afternoon when the game was called. If it had been up to Pete Rozelle, he likely demands that NBC and MLB either have played that game in the afternoon or delayed it to Tuesday night or demanded the game be played that Sunday night just to protect Redskins-Giants in the ratings even if the field at Shea was a mess.
The Giants getting their kicks in '86 all the way to the Super Bowl. These two teams would meet again for the NFC championship first. This one was a nail biter. Joe Morris was sensational as always in 1986. At the time the last championship for the Giants was in 1956 (though they would play for one up until 1963) It was very long overdue.
I’m not a Mets or NY Giants fan (49ers and SF Giants fan here), yet I can’t imagine how legendary this night must have been for every New Yorker. You got to see your favorite baseball team win the World Series (unless your a Yankees fan) and you got to see your favorite football team beat a hated rival and go all the way to win the Super Bowl vs Denver. Legendary night for New York sports.
Steve Cox...Seven of the Giants 14 victories were by five points or less. Those seven narrow wins could easily had been losses. I remember watching plenty of their games that year. Lady Luck was a huge factor in a few of those games. "Great teams" don't narrowly squeak out victories.
@@joeyrincones9308 Great teams response to pressure. You can't win close games with responding to pressure. That's what separating great teams from that 0-16 Cleveland Browns team. And how to do you know how your team will respond to pressure if your blowing ever body out?
@joey rincones i'd rank them way ahead of any of these soft modern era teams. LT would not even be allowed to suit up for games in this day and age. His whole playing style is illegal based on the way the play now 💯
@@stevecox7462 ...I'll agree with that. L.T. was the greatest defensive player I ever saw. Deacon Jones, Butkus, before my time. Joe Green was amazing.
I made a deal with my parents back then. I had to prove my grades didn't slip and I still would get up for school. I was able to watch every Monday nighter. It was great inspiration!😁
Yeah, most were close... I think it's much more interesting that they fought hard for many close wins rather than crushing everyone. That said, by the end of the year, they were totally dominating.
Phil Simms was standing in the Atlanta airport . I said are you Phil Simms . He said whos Phil Simms . i realized he must not have wanted to be bothered, and moved on . Afterwords i wish i would have said . He is a terrible quarterback in the NFL.
I remember some pals and I commenting that very night how we would rather watch NFL _highlights_ than live baseball. And it's still true today. Moreover, I still prefer watching NFL highlights from days of old when NFL actually stood for National Football League, in contrast to today when NFL stands for something else and is unstomachable, for me at least.
Al Michaels doing a Kevin Harlan by calling the Giants vs Redskins game, and giving some updates and Doing a little play by play of game 7 of the World Series.... I'm calling BOTH games! 🤣
Never realized the Giants were playing at the same time until I just heard Joe Garagiola mention it on the replay of Game 7. Really cool to hear the reactions from the fans. Like another perspective on history. Very very cool!
LOL at Gifford assuming that the crowd is cheering LT overcoming his drug problem as the Mets tie up the game, even as the entire stadium is chanting "Let's Go Mets." Fortunately Al set him straight.
Joe Morris my favorite Giants running back of all time. Rodney Hampton, Tiki Barber, Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs round out my top 5. With Otis Anderson getting honorable mention. Especially after his amazing running in Super bowl 25
That had to be the weirdest game of all time if you were a Mets and Giants fan. If you were trying to switch back and forth or have the Mets game on and the Giants game on radio. There was no split screens back then. No going your phone and watching the game and putting on your TV. For the most part it was one or the other that day.
As a Yankees fan I didn’t watch this game because I wanted to watch the World Series game seven. I’m going to get a lot of crap for what I’m gonna say next, but I was rooting for the Red Sox because I didn’t want to see that other New York team win a World Series.
I was listening to a sport show on WTIC in Hartford Connecticut when A caller called in and said Phil Simms is not the answer I called in a few minutes later and I asked what was the question
In watching these videos, I'm reminded of the great running backs the Giants had, like Morris. And let's not forget the dual-1,000 yard tandem of Ward and Jacobs. In 2020, let's get back to it!
MNF in the 80s for me as a kid from Boston going to school in Pittsburgh would mean 25 cent draft night and buckets of wings at the local hole in the wall bar.
Skins fan my dad made me go to bed 8:30 east time. He comes in my bedroom a few hours later to wake me up and say Lawrence Taylor's broke Joe theismann leg. I was happy they won but sad we lost joe.
Anyone know what affiliate this was grabbed off? If WABC or WCVB, interesting they didn’t cut around 1:58:00 to break in, perhaps due to the Heidi Game.
Someone should sit the espn dorks down and have them listen to how announcers announce a game. And produce a telecast. ESPN has single handedly ruined what was a great institution.
