What a great crazy game. This time in the NFL, was my first introduction to the NFL. 1986, a friend called and said "Dude, turn over to NBC and watch this guy Elway. I think he's gonna do something wild!" I turned over there and it was the second play of the 98 yard drive in Cleveland. I was hooked! And my team was then the Broncos. I was 15 when I saw that game on TV. From then on, it was Elway and the Broncos. Denver is thousands of miles away from where I grew up, so not having a regional pro team, it was Denver for me. I've been thru all the ups and down rooting for the Bronc's! This was one of the games I went to school the next day and just raved about this game and how Elway scrambled and made plays happen!
Thanks for posting this what a heartbreaking loss for the Bears I remember watching this game and thinking they need to make up for 1986. Little did I know ownership Mike Mccasky fired GM Vainisi, Putting himself in charge and it was the beginning of the end for the Chicago Bears. Lack of good draft picks doomed them by 1991
The Bears had many extra draft picks in that timeframe. The Bears got two first round picks for Wilber Marshall signing as a free agent with Washington.
Hopefully we can get an upload of the 84 Monday Night game between the Broncos and Packers that was shown in the opener. Special memories of that game.
Thank you for fixing and uploading this, Dave! Great memories from when I was 23. It is even better seeing HOF “Mongo” Steve McMichael in his prime. He is forever young here on You Tube!
@@ed2kou1 check phenia Films and classic mlb. They're not dedicated to the royals but there are games on there but I haven't seen any dedicated Royals vintage game channel so far
I was in 4th grade and I lived in Denver area at this time. I remember this game well. There was a blizzard all weekend in Denver leading up to this game. The day before this game a Continental' airlines DC9 crashed at Stapleton Airport in Denver due to the blizzard and a deicing issue on the planes wings. Worst crash ever in Denver I beleive. A lot of people died. We had this Monday off of school due to the blizzard. Give me a thumbs up if you remember this day in Denver.
I was at work when this game was played. the chicago Tribune had a 900 number to access news and weather forecasts and sports updates. I called the 900 number many times that night, only to be disappointed that they lost this game. Good thing I never got caught dialing that number...the toll charges were pretty high!!!
Payton retired after this season. He did not appear to be happy. When a team chooses to give the ball to fridge instead of him at the goal line, what do you expect?
the play calling on that goal line series is still stupefying. 1st and goal, and neither Payton or Anderson touch the ball? a McMahon designed option roll-out? The Fridge? Ditka trying to relive his Superbowl “genius” play calling, or he never learned that designed running plays for Mcmahon and Fridge were idiotic when you have Payton, Anderson, Suhey, and a couple other decent backup RBs.
Payton didn’t retire because of the play calling. 87 was Payton’s last season regardless he made it known before the season started. With that said the play calling was the result of Ditka’s ego starting to get in the way too much. He was part of the reason they didn’t win after 85
Had nothing to do with him retiring lol. He retired because it was his time after 13 years 💯 Giving the ball to the fridge literally had nothing to do with it smdh.
Every throw all the pukes of today gush over that Mahomes makes...Elway made in this game. He did it every game and did it better. In addition the beating he took in this game...he took every game.
@@tonywright282I disagree their best best would have been 87, only because the 49ers lost to the Vikings. Had McMahon stayed healthy in 86’ it would have been a close game with the Giants, but I would have given the Giants the edge. From 87 - 90, the Niners were the most talented team. The Bears just weren’t as good or as talented as those great 49ers teams.
@@thfzn3130 You are right after I gave it some thought and reflection, in 86 if McMahon or Tomczak were healthy I believe Chicago would have lost a close, low scoring defensive battle to the New York Giants in NY in the 86 NFC Championship Game and as you said I agree I believe Chicago should have beaten Washington in the divisional round if McMahon had have stopped throwing the damn ball so much and ran Walter Payton more, he had 74 yards rushing at halftime but only 11 yards rushing in the second half why, because McMahon and Ditka started throwing the ball more and oh did I mention Jim McMahon threw three interceptions in that game two of them in the second half and one of those two in the red zone, winning that game there’s no doubt the Bears would have beaten Minnesota in the Championship Game and went on to beat Denver in Super Bowl XXII
@@tonywright282 McMahon was crushed on a TD throw to Morris in the first half. After that you could see the balls he threw had nothing on them. I think you're right about 86. Even with a healthy McMahon they didn't have a reliable receiver. McKinnon was out all year and Gault's hands were always suspect. Keith Ortego was their number 2 receiver and no one would be scared by him. It was a short lived run, but man what a ride!
This season was during my senior year of high school. This was a strike season, the year of the "Scabs". I was the Denver Broncos mascot, "Huddles". I was on the field for the game, of course. This was Walter Payton's last game ever in Denver. I was able to get his wrist band after the game. I took off my costume, and spent the last half of the 4th quarter on the Bears sideline (I was determined to get my prize, LOL). One the greatest memories of my life! Mr. Payton was incredibly gracious! Oh yeah, GREAT GAME!!!
People say Mahomes is the greatest all the ways he throws the things he does. All anyone has to do is watch this game and u see Elway was better in every aspect of the game. And he did it against tough physical defense instead of the soft ass stuff of today. He is the greatest ever.
And he blows the win with a bad interception. Uncharacteristic game for him for sure. I'm definitely on the side of him being more underrated than overrated. Dude was a gamer.
Holy crap, dude. I think I asked you for this. Unreal. This is one of the greatest regular season wins in Bronco history. Pretty much the monsters of the midway, at Denver. Broncos should have been there instead of the Patriots in ‘85..maybe things could have been different. thanks
Amazing run by those bears, 36 of 40 regular season games learning into this game, 25-straight wins with McMahon as the starter, incredible, what a team.
Man I remember this game....but I bet Gene Lang remembered it more after that hit by Samurai Mike Singletary..that's what i mainly remember about that night..WOW!!..what a hit..he was my all time favorite LB.
I will never forget this game. I was a freshman at the University of Colorado, and a bunch of us were all watching it in the TV room in the dorms. There was a *very* attractive young lady watching it, and I had my eye on her all night. Her face was completely blank the entire night, until the last play when the Broncos won. I was so happy…..then I looked at her and she mouthed “Shit!” and stormed out of the room. Now, I just assumed that if you went to CU, then you were from Colorado and rooted for the Broncos! That was my first indication that I was surrounded by all sorts of people from all around the world, and some of them might, just might, be Bears fans.
This was the beginning of when the AFC was so vastly inferior to the NFC, but during the regular season a lot of times the AFC could compete a little bit. They were still you could tell they were still a little bit inferior to the heavyweight like the bearers of the NFC, but they could compete with them but then in the Super Bowls they just couldn’t compete but Denver during the regular season a lot of times would play these big heavy NFC teams through the Hiltonand beat them sometimes
Serves Ditka right for Perry to fumble on the goal line as poetic justice for Payton not getting that TD in SB 20 although 3 seasons prior … it was the football God’s way of reminding him of that injustice … getting too cocky and cute and it costs them momentum and the game … RIP Walter !
Oh get over it Walter didn’t score in the Super Bowl boohoo. I guess some people forget it’s a team sport and they won the big game. If walter couldn’t get over it then he was a bad teammate
@@williamstocker584 oh please … he worked his ass off for some bad teams … and that was his crowning moment, his crescendo of his career and his lack of awareness coach somehow forgot to call a package for him at the goal line to get a chance to score … clearly you see karma appearing here in this game with Perry yet again fumbling …
I have about hundreds of 80's games from all teams to possibly work on at some point. I've done a bit of baseball -- ru-vid.com/group/PLgbtYZmWdbXKfrgB5gW--TPX0QzT8Lkmg -- but NFL is my main focus
John Elway was an established player around the time 2 trips to super bowls both loses to New York Giants and Washington Redskins with winning record but would have to lose 1989 to San Franciaco but won 1998-1999 and now Hall Of Famer and won another super bowl with Gary Kubiak as Head Coach his backup and was GM picked up Peyton Manning to win the super bowl.
this could have been the super bowl they gave washington by far there toughest game if they had won would have hosted minnesota n with a win would have played denver in the bowl!!!!
